Ladies, I have just visited my seamstress yesterday and I have to admit that Im impressed by her work, as always. I printed out the page from Nicole( thanks!;-)) and handed the lady who was taken absolutely by surprise! It never crossed her mind that actually somebody will dig on it. She was so shocked that she said "Barbara, I love you!".
So girls, I spread my newly obtained knowledge and you definitely made my day. Thanks!

Basia, do you feel you have the correct word for what you are trying to determine? I can call my mom and ask her.

I just saw this thread now, otherwise I would have asked her sooner.

I'm not sure if I understand the question though. Is it a seam that goes down all the way from the collar down to the hem of the skirt? Is it centered on the back of the dress, and is there just one seam?

Typically a dart is a smaller section that gets tucked in to create an indent so the garment does not just fall straight down. You typically see darts on the front at the bust, or along the midsection to create an indented waistline.

San, you described exactly "the thing'Ii have in mind except that I do it to dress which has mid-calf length and it is not cut in the waist. It is actually type of a seam since the material is turn inside the dress/shirt but it is not cut out. Well I sea I a dealing with the pros here:-). Thanks for help!

Sorry Basia. Your question did stir interest with me but I was having a hard time coming up with the answer.
I haven't sewn clothing for years. I agree that the word dart could be the correct word. I was thinking also of a seam that goes down the whole length of a dress or skirt, I believe it is called a princess seam.
Can you give a little more detail on what you are having done to this shirt? I think the word "cut" is throwing me off. Do you mean a sewn seam? Is she going to sew a seam in the back of the shirt from a point under your shoulder blades to just above your hips to give the shirt more curve and waist definition? I think I would call that a dart, as Ana did.

Thank you Ana! I see my question did not too much interest and I still have to deliver the answer next time I see my Seamstress! I looked through my dictionaries and all I found was "tuck" but somehow I feel you are much closer to the truth so I will stick to it.

Girls, now a days finding a good seamstress is a miracle, not too mention to do it in Italy. I've ben lucky enough: she is great at her job and on top of that she speaks English! However with todays' visit we found ourselves in a difficult technical/language situation. How do you call in English this particular parallel cut on the back of the fitted shirt that actually makes the shirt fit? It's not only cut, it also gathers a cloth a bit. The same kind of cut, although short is used waist down to fit pencil skirt.
I was trying to fit a dress that was too wide for me and even though we both knew what needs to be done neither of us knew the proper word. Please help!
