Just an update: The folk at Rockywoods Outdoor fabrics were very helpful I called them with Laura's description and they steered me in the direction of a poly-cotton ripstop poplin fabric.

Laura, Thank you, I will poke around those sites. The kids are not in water but there is a lot of hiking and muddy play so quick-drying and breathability is what I am looking for.

Do they need to be ok for use in water, or just quick drying? I think you're loking for men's swimwear fabric, or technical / outdoor fabric.
Some sources:
Rockywoods Outdoor Fabrics http://www.rockywoods.com
The Rain Shed http://www.therainshed.com
Nonspecialist fabric stores also might have some options, but those would be where I'd start. You're probably looking for a ripstop nylon in s medium weight - too thin and it'd be clingy, too hefty and it would be more like something you'd make a back pack out of.

I want to make my son a few pairs of pants (very simple, just elastic waist) because I am having trouble finding anything that fits. He is thin and tall for his age. Only requirements are that the fabric be quick-drying.

I am thinking of fabric like this one:
http://www.rei.com/product/877.....horts-boys

Where can I buy such fabric? Is it easy to work with? If not, would tailors be willing to work with it?
