Might be too late to be helpful, but echoing Roxanna's comment about the coding robot ... my son is a total techie and loved coding, especially around that 8 - 10 age ... another idea is that there are lots of coding clubs and classes springing up all over the place ... some are on a drop-in basis. Maybe a few classes might be fun? Good luck; it's so hard to shop for kids, so many of them have so much already!

I-Pad animation!
I gave my nephews this great book Klutz: Lego movie kit! and a bunch of lego people. (they already have tons of legos) With the ipad/app they can make their own movies! its really cool... The book has lots of useful instructions in how stop animation works, story boards, backgrounds etc.,

Be sure the parents are ok with what you are giving, especially if it connects to the internet or can connect them with strangers (like a phone).
The LEGO collection may be worth money. DS2 partially funded college by selling many of his sets. Some pieces may have been discontinued.
My grown sons still have the real tools that their grandparents got them over 20 years ago.

We are getting my 8 year old a Nintendo Switch this year, which he has been begging for. Another great one is the M-Bot, a programmable robot that teaches kids how to code.

Lots of great ideas here. We did give them those wooden tool kits when they were little, but no real tools yet.

I had a wood-burning kit as a kid and loved it. Forgot about them.

DH thought maybe a weather kit of some kind.

A year or two ago we bought the boys some scientific stuff from I think Discovery world or something. The step-dad poo-poohed the presents but all three loved them as it turned out.

We've given 2 sets of kids our old iPads. I'll check with Mom and see if they need new ones. And I'll go online and look at these resources you've given me.

Overall I'm going to stick with books and crafty stuff.

Oh, we also put substantial funds into their education funds each year. Some day they will come to appreciate that.

Ok, other people are jumping in, so I guess I will too. First off, have you checked out the thinkgeek.com website? Tons of great ideas there, for geeks of all ages.

I wonder if anyone I’ve gifted starter tools still has them. I like to give a partial set for fourth birthdays—level (yes, there is an app in your phone that does that, but I mean the kind with the bubble in it), electric screwdriver, which they play with like it’s a drill and also enjoy using properly, and a tape measure, which is often the focus of a stage around that age. A rubber mallet, depending on budget. But I’m just daydreaming about little ones, smaller than yours.

Geek favorites that involve no tech are the board games Settlers of Catan and Munchkin.

You can get high tech fancy drones for a lot of money, or remote controlled helicopters for under $20. I think ball helicopters are really cool. They are shaped like a ball with propellers on top, and are controlled via hand movements instead with a controller. This looks fun; if they have phones they can use https://www.uncommongoods.com/.....r-airplane

The programmable Lego technics kits with motors start around $100.

You mentioned that your husband likes to give iPad type devices. Those would certainly be happily received by the kids, but you have to coordinate with the parents.

If you look back at my post about tech for my dad, you’ll see numerous watch-type devices that have gis, so the parents can track the kid. Some have other cool functions.

I got my kid a pair of those windshield wiper glasses around that age—he couldn’t wait for rain.

Ditto on Carla’s idea! My dad gave me a starter set of real tools, when I was in high school or college and 20+ years later, I still have them. Of course, we also have my DH’s childhood LEGOs..and my DS’s. Some things never go out of style. :).

This may be old school, and not necessarily ‘techie’, but one year we got the boys each their own toolbox and a starter set of decent tools. (They liked ‘helping’ Dad build a fence, deck, shed, and garden benches.) We added more real tools as stocking stuffers in later years. Of course they got toys and such as well, but guess what they still have and use?

Well, there are two boxes of Lego’s in the cupboard under the stairs as well. :-D

FWIW, could be a good gift for a girl too!

No more excuses, time to turn to holiday gifts. The Mom of 10 and 8 year-old boys suggested that we get them some techie gifts this year. (They have mountains of Legos and games and I don't think Mom wants more of these.) Before I turn this project over to techie Grandpa DH, I'd like some ideas. DH will be thrilled of course, having given up the idea of getting computer type gifts for members of our generation who just aren't going to use them. Nope, nobody our generation is going to get an iPad or tablet this year.

The older boy texts with me once in a while. He's also made some Lego videos for me to see. The younger one learned how to call me on Skype before he was 2. Yep. He's not yet into texting though.

I usually buy them books and games, which they like a lot.

Any help?
