I adore outfit lab sessions. I know they are time consuming to do and even more so to take and post all the photos. But all the effort pays off when you see how versatile a new wardrobe addition can be. I adore how the Mango shorts look on you, especially the slouchy fit of these, they feel very "of the moment" and pair beautifully with many items in your wardrobe! They have the potential to be a workhorse. I especially like these paired with the seafoam green in 20/21 but all combinations work well.

And wow the EB shorts are still going strong! The style is more traditional but they also look like they can hold a place in your wardrobe. They are different enough from the Mango's to be worthy of keeping!

Thank you, Angie--glad to hear your thoughts on the fit, and your favorites of the try-ons. Yes, I do like a bit of slouch, don't I? It will be good to compare the two sizes at home, where I can assess them better. And the bob is getting there, yes!

Carol, I've been sewing since I was in high school. There were quite a few years where I made window coverings for my homes (I moved a lot, in the Army), but didn't sew clothes for myself. I started doing that again around 2000. Sewing knits and slippery fabrics like light-weight silk have their own sets of skills. I've picked up a lot of techniques in classes I've taken through organizations like American Sewing Guild (a hobby group, not professional).

Kelly and Jaime (queen of long shorts!) thanks for your kind thoughts. That blazer was a fun find at a local boutique, which sadly closed this past February.

Well I don't think you will be surprised that I love them! My preference is slouchy so I didn't think about your sizing down, but of course it doesn't hurt to check. I love the blazer in #24 also btw.

I love the new shorts and think the fit is perfect. It's a little slouchy and cool. To me, that looks so modern and chic. You already have the older more fitted pair. Both are fantastic!

I guess these sort of fall into that new "jorts" cut we are all talking about. The color is great--really more of a hazelnut to me. And a lot of structure, but also easy. I see these types of shorts and feel like they would be so ugly on me, but your photos make me tempted to try it.

All outfits are great, and I am curious to know how long you have been sewing, because I understand flowy fabrics are harder to work with.

OOOH! Very exciting outfit lab! And your bobbed hair is back, Sharan! WOW to it all :)

LOVE the MNG shorts!! Awesome styling, and looking chic and interesting as always! You have a KILLER wardrobe - and everything works together beautifully. Your disciplined colour palettes and creative stamp are wonderfully signature :)

I'm not sure they're too big since I've dressed you in person and these might be dead right. The roomy drape looks "Sharan-esque", to my eye. That's how you like your bottoms and outerwear to fit. That said - always good to compare sizes. Let us know which you prefer.

I like the EB shorts too! (Impressed you kept them). They fit well in that unisex androgynous way that is sooo 2025. You wear them with panache! Great mushroom colour. Enjoy!

My faves from your outstanding set of looks are: 1, 2, 5, 12, 13, 17 and 19.

Very fun!

Wow, thanks, everyone for your comments. These are very helpful. You knew I'd be thinking, "do I need both pairs of brown shorts?" and I'm glad to hear your comments about the different looks and purposes they serve. I agree I could see having both the EB and Mango in my wardrobe.

kkards, I'm with you--I don't want tight shorts, and the smaller ones felt tight in the waist in the dressing room. So I'll be comparing the sizes again carefully.

Karie, your comment made me remember there is a button-tab detail at the waist. I can try tightening the waist with those buttons. Doh!

Janet, I can see how this style could fight against you. I think you look smashing in your long, sleeker-lined jeans shorts.

I like the Mango shorts a lot, and while they look a little loose, I don’t think they look too big. Perhaps a tuck or two in the waistband would help them to fit perfectly.
The J Crew shorts look good too but are more casual than the same outfits with the Mango shorts, which are definitely dressier.

I think these are great! I like both the Mango and the EB. The Mango are trendier but I don’t see the EB as dated, just more classic. I can see a use for both in your wardrobe.

I fear this new style of short doesn’t work for me — I’ve tried a couple and just hate the proportions on me. They seem to emphasize how my legs are shaped like upside down tree trunks, LOL. Unless I put on high heels with them, and who wants to bother with that?? So instead I find myself buying another pair of loose, lightweight pants for summer and again moving further away from shorts. Oh well!

I agree with Jenni NZ, these 2 shorts serve two different purposes in my mind too. The EB's are sportier and the Mango's have a dressier vibe. You look terrific in both. Looks like you have a plenty of lovely ways to style them. You'll just have to sort out which fit you prefer, it's difficult for me to tell there's any fit problems from these photos, but you'll know best.

Eddie Bauer look like you’re heading out for a beach walk. Mango look like you’re going to a dressy lunch.
2 different purposes to my mind.
Mango look more like your jorts uniform.

I really like both. Yes the Mango are a little big. I love the EB. Rises are dropping and silhouettes will be narrowing, according to ANGIE. Narrow capris and pedal pushers are being seen already on trend makers. Not that I care too much about that, just saying. They look fabulous on you. I have narrow hips that get lost in volume. You wear both silhouettes well. If you can get a Mango pair that fits better in the crotch area I would say keep both. They are different enough.

So versatile and so your style.
Sorry but EB look a bit dated to me, due to a slimmer cut and lower rise. I also like more deeper color of Mango shorts.
I responded team navy to Angie's question, and yet I think I might be team chocolate. Or benched, at least.

I bought these brown shorts at Mango yesterday--maybe a bittersweet chocolate color?--and did a bunch of try-ons with them today. I really like the color and style of them.

The color is a super close match to a pair of Eddie Bauer shorts that I've had for about 15 years. I've kept them through thick and thin, literally--hung on to them through the seasons that they really didn't fit, just because I couldn't bear to let them go. The style, length, and color made them favorites that could not be replaced. (Ironically, those Eddie Bauer shorts are back to fitting me nicely again, as you'll see in photos below.)

The style of the Mango shorts are like some beloved khaki shorts I wore in the 1990s. I think they were J.Crew. They are long gone.

After I did these try-ons today, I ordered the size down from Mango. I did try on the next smaller size in the store, and I chose the ones you see here. But I'm feeling they are a bit too loose. I may be between sizes; we'll see.

Meanwhile, here are many ways I might wear them. And I put on the Eddie Bauer shorts with some of the same items, for comparisons.

1-4: Mango shorts with a brown and purple arty-striped tee (made by me), white denim jacket (Banana Republic)

5-6: with a lilac-gray tee (Aritzia) and floral denim jacket (made by me); closeup in photo 25

7-11: Mango shorts and Eddie Bauer shorts with a mauve floral tee (made by me) and dark denim jacket (Caslon)

12-14: both pairs of shorts with an arty blazer (NY 77) and a cotton crew-neck tee in chalk and a black and white linen v-neck tee (both Eileen Fisher); closeup of the chalk tee, EB shorts and blazer in 24

15-16: with a white with purple floral linen cap-sleeved top (made by me)

17-21: with a silk cap-sleeved long-tailed multi-colored abstract floral top (made by me), a blush wash jean jacket (AllSaints), and a mint linen long cardigan (Caslon)

22-23: with a silk long-tailed brown, mint, and aqua tie-dyed tank top (unknown designer)

26: dressing room photo of the back of the shorts.

I'll be interested to hear your comments on the new shorts, the comparisons with the Eddie Bauer old favorites, ruminations on chocolate, or any other thoughts you wish to share.
