I'm so over the presumptuousness of male gaze. Women don't exist to beautify his landscape, so it's too bad he feels that anyone is interested in his opinion on what we should wear. And so much of women's opinions on what other women should wear is really just internalized male gaze, when you get down to it.

Personally, I don't wear yoga pants as streetwear, but I have too much on my mind to have space for opinions on what anyone else wears. (Though I guess pronounced camel toe or quadriboob on women who've clearly put a lot of thought and money into what they're wearing still makes me wonder, so I'm not fully evolved yet.)

I was also going to post this. This was hysterical to me because I agree with the guy and was relieved I never publicly wrote about it ; otherwise the protest would have been on my lawn !!! ROFL.

I agree completely with Angie, except that I am not a professional. I cringe every time I go to my kids' high school and ALL the girls are in yoga pants.

I love the cargo shorts editorial! It just slays me that any man would still presume he could tell women what they should and shouldn't wear. (The fictitious wife in the cargo shorts story took a much more subtle approach). One of the best perks of aging is that I no longer have to tolerate commands from random male strangers to "Smile!" -- no matter what I was feeling, as if I were somehow put there just to decorate THEIR world. If I was feeling particularly punk-rockish, I might bare my teeth at them like an angry dog or comment that, "I would, but my mother just died." I was a lot saltier back then.

Perhaps you have heard of the great cargo shorts editorial --- against men's fashion choices -- in the Wall Street Journal a couple of months ago?

<http://www.wsj.com/articles/ni.....1470082856> Sorry, I know it's paywall. The story got picked up in a lot of other places, too. Here's an excerpt:

"Dane Hansen, who operates a small steel business in Pleasant Grove, Utah, says that throughout his 11-year marriage, 15 pairs of cargo shorts have slowly disappeared from his closet. On the occasions when he has confronted his wife about the missing shorts, she will either admit to throwing them away or deflect confrontation by saying things like, “Honey, you just need a little help.” Mr. Hansen, 35 years old, is now down to one pair of cargo shorts, and he guards them closely. He has hidden them in small closet nooks where his wife can’t find them.

“I don’t let her get her hands on them,” he said. “I wish I had caught on sooner.”

Relationships around the country are being tested by cargo shorts, loosely cut shorts with large pockets sewn onto the sides. Men who love them say they’re comfortable and practical for summer. Detractors say they’ve been out of style for years, deriding them as bulky, uncool and just flat-out ugly. In recent days, the debate has engulfed the nation.

Mr. Hansen’s wife, Ashleigh Hansen, said she sneaks her husband’s cargo shorts off to Goodwill when he’s not around. Mrs. Hansen, 30, no longer throws them out at home because her husband has found them in the trash and fished them out.

“I despise them,” she said. “There were so many good things about the ’90s. Cargo shorts were not one of them.”

Fashion historians believe cargo pants were introduced around the 1940s for military use. In the U.S. Air Force, narrow cockpits meant pilots needed pockets in the front of their uniforms to access supplies during flight. British soldiers climbing or hiding in high places found pockets on cargo pants more effective than utility belts for storing ammunition.
They exploded into mass fashion in the mid-to-late 1990s, coinciding with the popularity of teen retailers like Abercrombie & Fitch, which became famous for filling its catalogs with shirtless men wearing only cargo shorts. The pockets filled a utilitarian need as cellphones became ubiquitous.

“Those teenagers are now married, and they don’t get rid of their clothes. They don’t evolve,” said Joseph Hancock, a design and merchandising professor at Drexel University, who wrote his Ph.D. thesis about cargo pants.

Around 2010, slimmer men’s shorts started to replace baggy silhouettes. By then, the backlash against cargo shorts was well under way.

Fashion guru Tim Gunn said in a 2007 interview with Reuters that cargo shorts were the least fashionable item of clothing in his closet. British tabloid Daily Express called cargo shorts “a humiliation for any man over 21 and should be sold only after proof of age has been presented.”

I was at the mall yesterday. I swear more than 30 percent of the women were wearing some sort of legging.

Truthfully, I thought they looked great. Most teamed their leggings with boots and longer toppers. It is just starting to get cool here and it seems the women were desperate to wear their more-winter-like clothing.

So, this letter was written to the editor of the paper in the town where one of my friends lives. She attended the Yoga Pants Parade today and posted a bunch of good pictures of the event. She said that she was expressing her freedom to NOT wear yoga pants. There were photos of people doing outdoor yoga, many wearing some very crazy print pants. And also signs with "We Wear What We Want." and "Peaceful Pants Party."

Also, Sylvie, there were men in tight yoga pants too. One was wearing leopard.

The guy is hilarious. I do find it kinda true that men tend not to subject everyone to bodycon like women do... they subject us all to baggy sloppy... and thus got the equally hilarious 'pants on the ground' rap.

But yeah, the topic is boring now. You lose; I win: checkout my capri work leggings

Reminds me of the fuss a few months back when the headmistress of a U.K. school asked parents to not wear pajamas to school functions. Pupils at the school wore school uniforms, and, since teaching staff had a dress code, the headmistress felt parents ought adhere to the same standards in their attire when visiting the school. Angry parents reacted by insisting on their right to wear whatever they wanted and held a rally where a bunch showed up at the school in nightgowns, slippers, and robes. The juxtapositions with their children's neat attire was odd, to say the least.

I agree that adults can wear what they want, but I'm not much for supporting those who delight in defying what seems to me are reasonable requests for restraint in public venues. Being aware of the impact a personal choice can have on others seems to be a missing element in these discussions.

Agree Lisap, the debate is getting tiresome, and I bet you look FAB in your gear.

Don't people have something better to do that to make such a big deal out of criticizing what other people wear? Ok, maybe I'm a bit of a hypocrite because I love to get a good laugh watching Fashion Police once in a while, but IRL I have no use for it. If you don't like what other people wear, look the other way and get over it.

I'm with you Angie, I personally don't like to wear gear in public, but people should wear what they want.

sylvie55 - I agree . As if the opinion of some random man carries any weight. This debate is getting tiresome - and it's always presented in extremes. Yes, pilled and tight and unflattering yoga pants can look pretty bad on anyone - especially with certain body parts exposed . But styled with intent and care - I say go for it. I am wearing adidas track pants and a black Lulu sweater today as I head out to run some errands - and I'm sticking to it. My hair is done, I have makeup on, I am wearing interesting jewellery and carrying a bag appropriate to this outfit. It's graphic, modern, interesting, and comfortable. I personally don't care if it's not aesthetically appealing to everyone - it is to me, and that's all that matters :)

Women - and men - CAN wear what they want. I do support that. And the age reference to "women over the age of 20 should not...." makes me angry.

That said, I would love it if people did not treat sports gear as "every day casual wear". As a fashion professional, I don't find it aesthetically appealing, fun, creative, or even appropriate in most settings.
