I will come back later to chime in on your question, but in the meantime, can I just say that it is wonderful to see veteran YLFers pop in from time to time? Especially when they announce that their kids are getting married or going to college! Wow,I remember when they were tiny babies (including of course my own child!). Really speaks to the power and longevity of this wonderful community that Angie and Greg built. (stepping off my soapbox, completely teary-eyed!:)

Hi Natalie, we barely overlapped on YLF because I signed up just under 9 years ago and you didn’t post much from about 8 years ago. But I see I wrote 2 replies to that post where you were upset about your “apple” shape. I relate to several things- I am also a doctor (family doctor or GP- general practitioner not Goldenpig!) although I’m in the process of retiring at age 64. I am a “pear” shape with a side of “apple” which increased after I also had 3 children (now aged 34, 32 and 29), and I gained a lot of weight around perimenopause. It took me a long time to start losing that weight again, I have never been a keen exerciser despite being a doctor. (And now I finally have a diagnosis for my shortness of breath, I have bronchiectasis. So vigorous exercise is not going to be a happening thing now for me.)
I also love matchy matchy!
So welcome back to the forum from me and your new trench looks fantastic. I also adore the beautiful floral dress. And the skirt/shoes in pic 15.

Natalie! I actually was thinking of you recently! It’s so nice to see you again.

I love the burgundy trench, and yes, my teal version has a similar fate — I can button it, but it’s more, um, fitted now, and not in a comfortable way (my post-menopausal body seems to think I needed even more at the bust line, whyyyy?). I think mine is a 6, and these days I would actually get it on the roomy side. Alas, not easy to find the teal version! It’s sitting in my holding zone — I tried it on again after a modest weight loss this fall, but it just doesn’t feel right. Not only has my weight/size shifted in the past decade, but I’m preferring more ease in fit these days. I don’t know if getting back to my 2012 size is feasible anymore so I’m thinking of consigning it and finding a new trench. My dream version would be burgundy leather, but not super practical, huh?

Anyway, you look fabulous and it’s great to see you and your excellent style, and hear your family is doing so well!

Oh, I notice in your pics two sweaters we twinned on, that I let go years ago, but kinda wish I had that plaid V-neck again! It looks great on you.

I love the trench on you -- it's fantastic. Love the other outfits, too, and you do not look heavier at all. You look like you are having fun with fashion again. I love the textural plaids and all the burgundy mixing and matching you can do here. Fabulous!

Trench is absolutely gorgeous! Other outfits look great as well. Can’t tell at all that you’ve gained weight.

Wonderful to see you post, Natalie!!!! (My birthday twin! I missed you too). Your timing is impeccable seeing as you posted today when I shared with the YLF community that my word for 2026 is Nostalgia. Brilliant!

I remember when we met in Seattle, you were nursing your youngest. Now he's all grown up!

These moody and dark earthy reds and oranges are absolutely perfect on you! Love the specs that match :)

CONGRATS on your KILLER FAB Burberry trench coat. You couldn't have chosen a more perfect colour for your style! I particularly love it with the Burberry flats, sneakers, and stompy boots!

To answer your questions:

OF COURSE items that are 10+ years old can be in style. It's all about how they fit, how they are combined into outfits, and whether YOU love the look. I encourage you to sport a style that reflects your personality, sartorial preferences, values, lifestyle, and the weather. Prioritize comfort, what you enjoy wearing, and what makes you feel attractive and empowered. Let your signature style be the anchor that grounds your outfits. Nothing is dated when you and your outfit project confidence, ease, a pulled together look, and intention.

YES to UWP (Urban Warrior Princess) and RATE Kate Spade. Suits you to a tee. Your signature looks are right where you left them!!!

From what I can see in the pics, all the outfits work!

My favs are: #1, 7, 9, 16,17, 20, 21 and 22!

Look forward to seeing more of you on the forum! Hope to see you at another gathering this year too :)

Is it GP back for real??? OMG! So happy to see you again! I cannot believe your oldest is in college!!! How old is the youngest, than? And remembering a little GP Princess- we want to see them, too!
Loved the story behind this post and I still remember some of your older designer pieces, you had some great bags and shoes! Remember the Kate Spade trench, too-wow!!

I was mesmerized by that detail embelishment! I remember myself trying on a very similar trench with black pipings in my shops (Kate Spade was never ever available for me) the next year you bought yours ---but than I chickened out to buy it in the end.Too much of the "soul sucking beige" on me- that piece would have been such a big departure from my own beloved trench of that time, which was kind of a waxed black one and wore it to death between my age of 40-50!

Your new trench is beautiful and YLF in all these outfits! I don't have en answer to your question but curious what others will have to say. I also keep my clothes forever but i am seldom 100%pleased with mixing very old pieces with newer ones because they fit different on my current body and usually new pieces require new proportions, too. So, to be honest this is always a hard work- but i love when my efforts are rewarded and get a new outfit eventually!
So nice to see you post again!

Hello and nice to meet you! Your burgundy items are very cool. The moody palette totally resonates with me. The plaids, the dark florals all quite dramatic which is how I want to hone my style this year. LOVE your cherry Docs and particularly the outfits with them, and the jeans in long boots . The burgundy leather jacket is gorgeous. So many good pieces here. Looking forward to seeing more. Btw I have very old pieces in my wardrobe that I still wear, it's in the styling as I'm sure you know and of which you've done a great job.

Natalie, how great to “ see” you again! I used to just go Plonk! Over the outfits you created.

I love the new trench for you.

Need more time later but, I encourage the major closet edit even if need to do a section at a time. I don’t know how much space you have, but I think it’s ok to make generous use of HOLD totes if that helps whittle down main closet to just what fits & feels right. Not at all discouraging a major toss- out, but noting issues that have kept me from moving forward. For the past 6 mos I have been dealing with an ill family member out of state and spending literally weeks in the car, hospital bedside, motels— fast food, restaurants, disrupted exercise routine—and gained some weight. So have been very discouraged about fit of clothing. I tried to be very deliberate about cull vs Hold and actually decided on a separate “Size Hold” — the “ I’d buy again” or maybe DID re- buy a size up—plus a “ Style Hold” for items that fit but I just wasn’t wearing & couldn’t decide. Plus actually getting rid of things as well. I may later do the thing about picking a couple of those to rotate back in for outfit creation to decide K/T, but I was getting overwhelmed.

I hope you get more ( and better) input from others Fabbers on what’s current & such. I have had trouble myself making decisions based on the concept of “ current” vs what I l just like , even though what I like may be changing because I’m seeing newer style in stores and online. It’s not because I have such a strong and individual sense of my personal style, haha! I can get quite insecure or flip- flop. But I’m finding more that only I can be the judge, really.
So I might add something new and fresh to ME that is just about to have run its course fashion- wise. Or want to copy a Pinterest outfit that I think is perfect for me and see it’s from 10 years ago! So I’m trying to just let all of that external noise go, and embrace my own choices.

Well, that was quite a ramble and maybe not on point for you at all. I’m just happy to see you back and sending good vibes for your style journey.

I think you look great. Burgundy is a good color for you. The trench coat is beautiful, love it with the matchy shoes and bag. I also like the coat with the fur collar.

Hard to pick a favorite outfit, but 8, 10 and 13 jumped out at me. I like you in the pencil skirts, the Docs are fun and the plaid sweater a great statement piece.

Good luck getting back into it! The kid years are fun but not conducive to fashion!

Hello again! Team Burgundy checking in! It's funny, I was just thinking about posting again on YLF about my new burgundy trench, and lo and behold there's a post about burgundy! It's been so long since I've been here that I'm not sure if anyone still remembers me (other than the people I kept in touch with on Facebook)! I first joined in 2011, 14.5 years ago, after I had my second child. My uniform at the time was fleece jacket, mom jeans, diaper bag and Merrell Mocs. The YLF community helped me develop my fashion sense and I had so much fun creating a whole new wardrobe. I even loved dressing up throughout my third pregnancy.

I was pretty active until about 8 years ago, but things just got busy with work and the three kids, we started investing in real estate so I couldn't keep spending a bunch of money on clothes, and then COVID hit and because I was working at the hospital during the pandemic, I started wearing scrubs all the time because they were washable (we used to come home and jump straight into the shower in the early days). Then it just became easier to wear scrubs during the day and pajamas when I got home and fleece jacket and jeans on the weekends. I was right back to where I started pre-YLF! I stopped wearing all my heels because I wanted my feet to be comfy, so I only wore sneakers and flats. Somehow over the years I gained 25 lb and a few pant sizes, blame it on aging/perimenopause maybe, but I also haven't been that diligent about diet and exercise. Although we have been pretty active with the kids, scuba diving (they're all certified and my oldest is a divemaster), and camping with the scouts (we went canoeing in the Boundary Waters this past summer). So fashion took a back seat for a long time. Can you believe my oldest just started college?

Recently I joined a Facebook group where they post WIWs in their Tieks ballet flats and it reawakened my love of matchy matchy (they love to match their shoe color to their outfits). I started wanting to make more of an effort to dress up, and pulled out some of my old outfits, but they don't all quite fit (see #1, my Kate Spade trench doesn't close anymore and the H&M plaid skirt doesn't zip up all the way). Being an apple is so annoying! My clothes fit everywhere but the waist and then people ask you if you are pregnant, womp womp. That was my last post before I signed off YLF, complaining that people kept asking if I was pregnant. Yet I'm even heavier than I was back then, ugh!

Anyways, I still like my old style for the most part, but I wanted to get some clothes that fit better. I just don't have the money or time to buy a completely new wardrobe. For a long time I've wanted to get a Burberry trench (although I was just searching the archives, and one of my first few YLF posts was "What's all the fuss about Burberry trenches?" and I said "I'd never pay $3000 for a coat!"...ok yep that didn't age well, haha). Another time I posted that if I ever were to get a Burberry trench, it would be a burgundy satin, not a soul sucking beige. Well that was prescient. I found this "mahogany red" trench on the Burberry website and was completely obsessed. It was perfect. I had to have it, even at full price. I bought two sizes, US 10 and 12, because they were the last two available on the website (besides size 0). My Kate Spade trench was a 6 and too tight, so I figured since I had grown a couple of sizes, that either 10 or 12 would fit. Well they were both too loose, even though supposedly Burberry runs small! But no US 8 available in the entire USA! I found a US 8/UK 10 on the UK Burberry website, but they would not ship to the US and the US Burberry customer service refused to help me. So I ended up buying it on the UK site and having a third party shipper send it to me, paying for shipping and extra tariffs. It ended up being my Christmas present, even though DH thinks I'm nuts for spending that much on a coat. I think it's worth it!

It's not really a keep or return (too late, tags are off!) but I am curious to know what you think of it on me? I hope the fit looks ok. It is maybe a little bit wide looking, but I think a size down would be too restrictive (anyways there aren't any smaller sizes available). I also think the color suits me more as a Deep Autumn (somehow I knew I was a Deep Autumn before because I posted about it on YLF, but I forgot about it). I recently did an AI color analysis using pic #2 and it said I was a Deep Autumn, which is good because my favorite colors are pumpkin, rust, teal, mustard, burgundy, eggplant, navy, etc. This mahogany red/burgundy color matches so much of my wardrobe.

I have a ton of burgundy stuff. Not all of it still fits perfectly, but the skirts fit if I leave it a little bit unzipped at the top (this was my trick to extending my wardrobe when I was pregnant, I managed to wear a lot of my regular stuff for quite a while during pregnancy). I do need to go through my wardrobe and sort stuff (I still have most of my stuff from the YLF days 10-14 years ago!) and pack some of it away. But I don't want to completely get rid of everything just yet, because I'm starting to work on my health again this year and I may be able to lose some weight and fit into my favorites. For now, I've refreshed my jeans wardrobe (Rag and Bone sweatpant jeans are still a thing, hallelujah!) and bought a new burgundy plaid skirt similar to my previous one in a larger size. I may go back and find some of my favorite pieces on Poshmark/eBay in a larger size too. I've been shopping Nordstrom, Amazon, Saks etc. and clothes shopping is not easy. My size is all over the place, I've had to buy and return so much (I brought two big bags back to Nordstrom today)! I'm anywhere from a small to a large!

One of my 2026 goals is to start wearing more "real" outfits from my closet. I've dug out my closet and am starting to wear some things I bought in the larger size but never got around to wearing (like the dress in #4/5). And I found my Burberry purse, and it's also Mahogany! And I found Burberry ballet flats with burgundy stripes on DSW. I'm in matchy matchy heaven (if you don't know me, that's like one of my signature style rules)! And I bought some cherry red platform Doc Martens to edge up my feminine outfits, I like the contrast of urban warrior princess. But I also like cutesy Kawaii like Tokidoki Jujube diaper bags (which I still use even though we are long past the diaper days).

Anyways here are some of my burgundy outfits, most of this stuff is old but I threw these on so I could see what still fits--doing a burgundy post was motivation for me to start the closet edit process. They are not fully styled with jewelry and everything, but which of these outfits work (or don't work)? Can stuff I bought 10 years ago still be in style? Is UWP and RATE Kate Spade still in? I seem to remember someone else had a teal Burberry trench--was it Janet? I missed you Angie and YLF, I know I've been a fashion zombie, but it's nice to be back from the dead!
Natalie (goldenpig)
