Thanks k can! I think I'm going to do that (check H&M etc.) rather than tailoring these.

LOL! If you want to just get an idea, then slip pins down the side on the outside, then fold the wedge that you would be taking off over and toward the back and pin it. Then try them on very very carefully.

Honestly, I would really seriously consider the cost at the tailor before you okay it. Really it looks to me like they would need tapering up even above the knee. There are lots of great pants out there and if you keep looking I bet you can find one at H&M for less than the cost of tailoring these. You are a devoted and frugal shopper! I'm not sure that these are worthy of you.

It looks like they have simple seams. How would I go about pinning them? Just slip pins down the length of the leg, or...? (I know NOTHING about sewing.)

Are both the seams simple seams? Just a straight line of stitching? Not folded over like jeans? (I'm guessing yes, because most dress trousers are.) Then it is a fairly simple alteration. It will still probably cost you $25 or $30 to have done. Just explain that you want them tapered and tell them approximately how much you want off of each side. (Try pinning them yourself to see how much). Don't let them just take it off of one side of the leg because it will be lopsided.

I found a pair of trousers in our laundry room free bin that I think would work really well as slouchy trousers. I've been interested in the look but unwilling to spend much money to try it out, so this might be a great solution. Those of you who have done this--what, exactly, should I ask the alterations person to do? The trousers currently are about 2 sizes up from my usual size, and have a slight bootcut shape. The knee area is the narrowest point on the leg. Also, how much should this type of alteration cost?

Added some pics showing them from various angles--funny how they look much slouchier in some pics than others! Would these be good candidates for tapering?
