Forwarded to DH as well!

Makes me realize how lucky I was years K-12. In 12th grade, we had to prepare "Exit Portfolios" as part of graduation, and one of the teachers judging them wrote me a long, bitter, scathing letter telling me that "marching to a different drummer" would get me nothing but a kick in the pants. I'm thankful that my regular teachers were there to laugh at it her for me. :T

As for college, I once asked for extra work because I was bored with some redundant assignments, and my professor advised me to see a shrink.

Yeah, school really is where creativity goes to die.

I have been been a creative and been the one to manage creatives. I will honestly say that often the creatives don't have enough insight into costs and structure to drive the changes they want, and the management often doesn't really understand the creative drive - they want proven results, which usually means building on the same stuff that's been done before because they can assume based on x, y, and z that a, b, and c will happen. I understand both sides, but they have to play nice for good things to happen.

Very interesting read. And, it does seem to confirm a lot of what I have seen. Yet, it really takes these creative people to take society to the next level.

I suppose the process is painful, though. As much as corporations laud "change" and "change management" I have yet to see one that actually embraces truly embraces it.

True in my experience. There is a book called "Switch" that deals with what needs to happen before people & organisations can make changes that is worth a look imo.

I really enjoyed that article, and sent it to Greg. Thanks, Anna. It once again illustrates the immense power of social norms, and how defying them takes courage and strength.
