Ginger, I do have thin smartwool socks, but when I've tried them under non-leather footwear my feet still get damp pretty quickly because the non-leather does not breath, and for me in colder months that always means cold feet. Have tried it a number of times of different footwear wearing them around the house and it always ends up there.

suntiger, yes the stretch panels are good but not if the calf circumference is off by much, which most are. I HAVE started looking at mid shaft boots, good idea, but I've run out of steam and energy at least for now :-)

The stretch panels are great, both for comfort and ease of fit. Have you looked at boots marketed mid shaft?

Chris, to echo/expand on DonnaF's sock suggestion, you don't need thick wool socks. Smartwool are thin dress socks. Wool is a rare fiber that doesn't feel cold when wet. I discovered this when wearing even leather boots some years ago; my cotton and polyester and acrylic socks got wet and made my toes horribly cold. Now I wear Smartwool socks. Usually when I take my boots off the socks are wet, but the wool still doesn't feel cold and my toes are fine. It does work!

Thanks Ellemnop! Love your screen name I've looked at all those brands you suggest and even with a fabric panel the ones I saw in wide calf sizes were all too narrow for my calves, even with a bit of stretch added. I'm sitting on my hands for a while. :-)

Ugh, I empathize with the frustration of turning over seemingly every stone and still being foiled. I've long thought that boots need to come in petite sizes too - I share the same issue that several folks on this thread do, is that as a shorter person with a heavier calf, my calf simply gets larger lower than a standard-height boot typically allows for :-(.

I don't have a huge collection, but have had smashing luck with regular-calf boots that have a well-integrated stretch panel in the design somewhere. Sometimes these are indeed still too tall of a shaft, but it's at least a design feature that give some additional flexibility (literally and figuratively). IMO this looks better in black boots than brown, but they're generally doing a better job these days of integrating the feature into the design a bit more.

I've personally had luck with Cole Haan, Franco Sarto, La Canadienne, and Donald J. Pliner specifically in the past. You might also consider looking on Poshmark if you're so inclined, it can be hit or miss but can be a way to track down slightly older styles or to duplicate something you find economically.

Zaeobi thanks, and good suggestion. I actually found the Macys boots in a store and decided to try them on as a fit experiment. Despite the poor quality and uncomfortable-ness, the fit was spot on so I collected a YLF find when I got home so I'd have the measurements for reference.

Wow Suz, that's persistance to search for 3 years! Makes perfect sense that you spent a lot and bought two pair! Laces WOULD help but I'm not
crazy about the style as you suggest. I looked at some of that sizing detail you mention. One boot detail said that the calf width was given for size 6, with it increasing by .2" every size up. It gets to be a real exercise in measurement math. :-)

Thanks Jenni NZ, you did indeed have a great stroke of luck.

Thanks DonnaF yeah those are not my style but never say never :-)
You are right that adding a thicker wool sock can help with the foot
perspiration issue I hadn't thought of that. I'm already sizing up to be able to add an insole and going up more for thick socks might make the boots look huge to my eye but it's worth a thought so thanks.

Chris; I think my tall boot requirements are about the same as yours. Thankfully I live in a mild climate so I don’t really need tall boots. The boots below are the only ones that have come close to working because they are 13.5” or 14” tall. Not your style, I know. FWIW, my feet sweat less and less as I get older. Would wearing SmartWool or other wool socks work for you while wearing non-leather boots?

Oh Chris I feel so sorry too. I had no idea in 2011 when I walked into a shoe store after a low-key search for only the third pair ever in my whole life (I was 50 by then) how lucky I was to find gorgeous tall black boots that fit 5 foot 1 inch me perfectly! They did cost $359 which is still the most I have spent on shoes since I think! But have been worn over 60 times since and I still keep them although hardly worn in recent years. I think after what you’ve just been through I had best keep them for ever! They are a bit battered and I did buy a replacement in 2017 which were a bit tight and needed stretching with a leather stretcher. Have kept both pairs for now.
I don’t wear the newer ones much either, feel sort of “off” tall boots, maybe cos I mostly wear pants in winter and wear booties instead.
I hope the universe turns something up in the future.

I'm so sorry, Chris. It is definitely frustrating and in my own experience, finding a fit involves a bit of luck as well as all that hard work. I think it took me 3 years of searching before I found tall boots that fit me...and this was during the period when tall boots were all the rage, they were EVERYWHERE, and, of course, you couldn't feel properly dressed without a pair!

(Is is any wonder that when I finally found them, I splashed out and bought two pair -- and that I'm still wearing the same ones, when I wear tall boots?)

I was thinking that in addition to elasticized portions in the calf, another feature that might help is laces. Might not be the style you are going for, however.

You probably saw this article in your searching but I thought this was an interesting point:

Retailers or brands normally take measurements from a medium size. For instance, Nordstrom’s measurements are based on size 8.5.

"Petite women typically have smaller feet, so you need to take that into consideration when you look at these measurements, i.e. boots in your size would be slightly smaller than the measurement numbers on the shopping website."

Anyway. Onwards! If tall boots REALLY become a thing again, more options will appear, you can depend on it. In the meantime, there are lots of great booties to spend your money on. :)

But if I'd recommend taking some measurements from the 'Macy's Style & Co' before you box them up, just so you know exactly which measurements to look for (e.g. I have a 16" calf but for some reason 17" shafts are too wide for me - go figure, lol!)

I’m sorry this has been such a frustrating search, Chris. I can relate!

I find that sometimes giving up seems to open the door to actually finding ‘the thing’. I hope that happens for you, but I’d not, as you say, you’ve lived without and won’t expire from lack of this exact style of boot. Another year might be ‘your’ year! Thanks for sharing your process and experience.

So here is where I am .... (long)

I wanted a leather riding boot style, low heel, calf width 16.00
- 16.50; shaft height 13.5 – 14”.

Have visited Macys, Nordstrom, DSW IRL, and one smaller local shoe store. I looked at 12+ online sites and 20+ brands, including
all suggestions from earlier in this post. Regular calf width are always too narrow, extra wide calf widths always too wide. Most of the wide calf ones were too narrow, and the few that were good had too tall a shaft height, like the Born ones I showed earlier in this post.

Many sites only allow filtering by “tall boots” (vs. say ankle boots), including Nordstrom. A few more offer additional filtering of wide calf vs regular calf. Only Zappos allows filtering on specific calf width measurements. I didn’t find ANY sites that filter on shaft height. So it’s a lot of reading descriptions for each boot. Some sites like Amazon do not give detailed measurements for some brands.

Someone mentioned Wardrobe Oxygen ... I did fid a good reference for “Wide Calf Boots for Petite Women” but it was written in 2010 so a lot of the info is out of date, and I got no new advice from it.

Errors

Walking Cradles Meadow Wide Calf showed 16” calf width online, but the boot was actually 15”. I tried them on, could not zip them up, and then looked online where I found many reviews that said other people also could not zip them up. Took out my measuring tape and they were 15".

The Born ones I showed that were too tall had the shaft height specified on born.com and macys.com as ¾” shorter than the boots IRL. (I ordered from both). If they had been as-specified they would have been perfect. I called Born customer support to discuss what I saw on their web site for the ones I ordered there, and they said it must have been an error in mfg. When I said that the same wrong measurement was listed on Macys.com they had no answer for it and offered me exactly nothing for my trouble.

I found exactly one pair with the right fit but they were synthetic - Macy's Style & Co. My feet perspire a lot and in winter if I wear synthetic footwear my feet get damp and cold quickly. It's leather only for me.

DuoBoots in the UK has 8 calf width sizes and 3 shaft heights (not all choices available in all boots). The quality looks good, prices start around $250. Shipping is free but returns are on your own dime. So if they didn't work I’d have to ship back to the UK, potentially at a premium cost to meet the 14-day return window. Not going there right now.

I've thought of visiting the equestrian shop not far from me but I've run out of steam. I might consider lower-shaft styles (mid calf) but suspect I’d run into the same issues.

I'M DONE!!! This is way too much work for a wardrobe item I’ve lived without for several years. On to other things ...

Thanks lyn67 having multiple pairs for skirts vs pants does seem a good idea. My biggest wardrobe hole right now is finding some that work with dresses/skirts so I'll focus on that. Yeah, I know the look you and LJP were talking about ... tall wide boots with heels etc ... I can't wear heels like that and even if I could they would be downright foolish in my real life (gravel driveway, slush/snow, etc) but they are cool to look at.

I'm late, and see you already made your decision. Just wanted to say I could never use the same long boot for pants and skirts or dresses(but I just never use long boots to pants, either:-)). May be this will help in your further decisions. These you have on look good wirth the pants, but are too wide on top with the dress. And I commiserate, I personally always struggled to find long enough for me tall boots-I love my riding boots to end just under the knee where my calves end and I am thinner.

Then, I know what Angie says. Editorials are full of midi hems styled with exaggeratedly wide cut tall boots- but they are mostly high heeled:-(( and wide on ankles, too-so kind of these don't cling to the leg anywhere else other than the feet...

Thanks Suz! I agree about investing in shoes. They can really elevate an outfit, but first and foremost they have to carry you and your feet through your day with comfort.

I've decided to return these Borns and keep looking. A quick look at DuoBoots (suggested by Evie) tells me that might be the answer for me.

Oooh, those are gorgeous!!

Fantasy-land for sure.

It's always hard to know which items to really spring for. My most expensive clothing items have been footwear and one blazer. The footwear makes sense for me because i count on my shoes to do a lot of style lifting and actual practical carrying me around. The blazer was worth it because it's a gorgeous classic item (bought a decade ago, still going strong). Coats can also be a good "investment" item since they don't date quickly. But yeah, people might be chasing you over a faux fur so realistic!

..just for fun saw these Gucci tall boots. In good colors for me, but $2k is fantasy-land :-) and the calf circumference is too small for me.

Evie, great suggestion for Duuoboots. I took a quick look and it seems
promising. Not custom made but supposedly a lot more size variations that most retailers. Thanks!

Irina and Bijou, good point about this being something I would probably want to keep for years, so important to get it right.

Suz, yup I hear you. Sometimes it's really worth it. A bit of a digression but I still remember a spectacular faux fur coat by Ralph Lauren I found probably 25 years ago. The fit was awesome and it looked just like a real fur coat. $700 was just too much but I've often wished I had pulled the trigger. Of course in today's world I probably would have had strangers yell at me for wearing real fur, it was that good looking.

Rachy - interesting comment about "tide you over" boots. The reality is I've lived without this type of boot for 4 or 5 years and I can certainly "survive" somewhat longer w/o them

Jessikams, yes there are NordRack and DSWs near me but their tall boot offereings this year are mostly higher heels than I want and almost no wide calf ones. I think I live in the land of the most casual of the casualization trend, with a small % of people being into something else. :-) Stretchy panels are a good idea.

Zaeobi, thanks! Yes it does sound like are similar. Thanks for the fitflop suggestion, I have not seen that brand in my searches but will check them out. Off to check out your other posting.

I get the feeling you & I have quite similar builds (I'm also on the cusp between regular & wide/ plus with my calf measurements). So I can sympathise with the hunt for 'wide' enough boots (both for my calves, but also shoe width - without being too tall for my petite height, or too loose at the ankles).

That said, I think the boots you've shown here fit you just fine - especially if you want the option to wear them with trousers) jeans tucked in (not just tights). But the most important thing is whether they're comfortable for you!

I myself have had luck with FitFlop's 'normal' boot widths. Pictured are the Signey Mixte boots - not saying you need to get these boots in particular, but just wanted to share some of the details that I've found help with the fit/ comfort (e.g. suede upper panel, pullon tabs, & only a *half* inner zip).

Hope that helps! But unfortunately you will need to kiss a lot of (footwear) frogs first - e.g. I posted here about the Easy Spirit boots I tried which were far too wide for my 16" calves (even in the regular width! Just FYI):

Do you have a Nordstrom Rack or DSW near you? They tend to have lots of options at affordable prices and you could try them on in person.

I also have a hard time with this type of boot but I love the look when it’s right. I’ve had success with boots that incorporate stretchy fabric panels as part of the shaft.

I also have a preference for the close fit… but it took me years, years, to find that pair of boots. One does need ‘tide you over’ boots sometimes.

If you prefer a neater fit, I say return. Long boots are problematic for me, as my calf is slightly wide, definitely in the goldilocks territory you speak of. This style of boot suits you, but I would not settle for anything less than something I love when it comes to something that is likely to be in your wardrobe for many years.

Yes, I totally hear you on the money. I hemmed and hawed and waited for a sale (and they were still pricey for me) but the fit and quality have not let me down. Plus they are waterproof.

They don’t look too bad but sorry, not the greatest fit on top. It’s frustrating, I know, to spend so much searching for tall boots. But maybe you should think if you are settling for less than a perfect pair that would last you years.

I understand the struggle finding tall boots that fit well. I am 5’2” tall, yet have thick calves. Years ago, I found “Duoboots”, which offers quite a few styles that can be made according to your measurements. I had success with them. Their online site shows you how to take proper measurements and then order the style you want accordingly. Might be worth checking out.

ljp thanks, your outfits are always so well fitted that I highly value your opinion. I have a few weeks before I have to return these so time to consider it all. I WOULD like a pair I could wear with skinny jeans OR a dress/skirt. Maybe that's too much of a HEWI and I'd be better off with this pair for pants and another pair of lower shaft ones for dresses ... or ankle boots and tights for dresses which Is how I'd do it now.

Suz, wow sounds familiar! I've searched all the major dept stores online I can think of and a few other sites and now need to go after individual brands. La C and Aquat are above my usual budget but I know the quality would be worth the price.

Minaminu good question about whether these would fit if narrowed down. It's kind of a moot point becaues I don't know how I'd find a cobbler who could evaluate the possibilties.

love the tall boots with the jeans and stripy jumper! From the pictures, they look perfectly fine with the jeans. Not sure if they would still be confortable if narrowed down?
