Agree with Nicole...try a crossover blouse. Very forgiving for apple shapes or waistlines in general.

Thank you all -- this is really helpful.

I was in Zara today and tried this on: http://www.zara.com/us/en/woma.....93998.html It was too voluminous on me (it seems to only come in M) but that made me think it might be a good drape-y style for my sis. If you scroll down you can kind of get a sense of the sleeve style -- kind of cape-like.

I'm 5'8," all legs with semi-long arms too. I think I'm a pear, not an apple, but I absolutely have a tummy to hide. Even if your sister is heavier than me, these styles might work for her. I often camo said belly with blazers, jackets, vests, and cardis. I try to draw the upward and away from the belly. If you go with a blazer, choose one that has a pretty contrast lining that can be rolled up in case the sleeves are too short.

I put some examples below, I hope it helps!

Thank you, Joy -- I'll definitely consider tunic-style tops.

Adelfa -- the "no knits" rule is priceless. I have an appointment right near our H&M today, so I'll stop in and see what's on offer.

The best advice I can give for an apple is to stay away from knit tops. It makes such a difference. On the pricier side you could give her a silk shirt (below, Two by Vince Camuto). For much less you could give her a cute blouse from H&M. Even when tucked, the material of these tops stands away from the tummy for a flattering appearance. If the sleeve length isn't right, she can roll them (the H&M option has a button tab feature to keep the sleeve roll in place).

I've been inspired by Judi Dench and her long dusters
https://www.google.com/search?.....GJH_gwM%3A
A loose and flowing, not clinging, top that works with her style, colors and climate might be very useful

My sister's birthday is fast approaching, and our tradition is to give clothing or accessories. She is 5'8" and most of it is leg. After a lifetime of being long and lean, this past year she has experienced some weight gain, particularly around the middle, that bothers her out of all proportion to how it actually looks to the rest of the world.

I would love to find her a top that's extremely flattering, with middle-camouflaging-properties if possible. (If it has long sleeves, they have to be super long because her arms are like her legs.)

Any suggestions from anyone who maybe has faced similar issues?

BTW, if it helps, she's in her early forties and is a working professor and mom. Climate is U.S. western mountain/desert: cold and with snow in winter, but hot and dry in summer.
