Like others- for day, I like something that can give me sun protection on back of neck and chest (so button up) but must be v breezy and withstand looking a little crumpled. I try to only wear fibers like linen or cotton.

Just popping in quickly to say my last couple of cover ups have been striped shirts from La Vie En Rose Aqua ... they always seem to have some version of this. They dry pretty quickly and look polished enough to head from poolside to lunch.

Have an amazing time ... the beaches in TCI are THE most beautiful I've ever seen in my life!

I have two - booth are definitely cover ups rather than dresses. They cover my arms and shoulders which burn easily. I also wear them to socialise with friends on the beach. I have sundresses to put on for the evening but there are too bare on the shoulder for a cover up in our climate.

If buying one today I would choose a button up shirt style - in a voile o muslin fabric. I live white but sunscreen can stain it easily so I tend to go for a pattern.

How exciting- have fun!!

Ooh! Have a fabulous time! My lakeside cover ups are more casual than what I wear to a tropical destination. For the resort style vacations, I packed sarongs (both long and shorter lengths). The long sarongs could also be tied up around the neck, for more coverage. I would also wear long, loose dress style cover ups. Those were perfect when going from the beach or pool to other places, like a restaurant. To dress up even a casual coverup, add a bangle or two, a pair of earrings and a pair of wedge sandals. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

I'm glad you asked the question, Carla. These are such fun, lovely, and practical suggestions! Like you, I've always just used t-shirts and workout shorts as coverups. I didn't imagine all the fun options between that old standby and the old-Hollywood glam look, where you'd almost feel the need to wear heels--haha!

I like lightweight voile coverups with sleeves - kaftan or otherwise. My arms and chest are always the first to burn and I want to be able to cover them up easily.

I include a black one that I own and like below, and also like the Emerson Fry offerings though they can run bit large as they are often one size or two sizes only.

Every summer I buy something from Oh My Gauze - the cotton fabric is indestructible and the colors are beautiful. They make knee-length or longer dresses that would be perfect over a swimsuit, and lots of them have pockets! They only have a few storefronts, but shipping and returns are very easy. I own both tops and dresses.

They're not as sheer as this picture appears, IMO.

I don’t do a lot of poolside time or take tropical vacations, but I do live half an hour from sandy Pacific beaches and go often.

Almost everything I use as a cover up is also worn elsewhere in different contexts. I like loose-fitting dresses that allow airflow and don’t stick to wet skin. I stick to silk and linen, but cotton would work too.

Button down shirt dress is ideal. You can have some arm coverage if you're getting too much sun, and you can leave it open if you want to still get sun on your body & belly or if you're throwing it on to walk to your room without the fuss of buttoning it all up. I love the ones people posted here but since I wear that style as a nightshirt, I couldn't ever shake the feeling that I was in public in a nightie. This year I found the holy grail: a dress that buttons all the way down, so I can use it as a cover up. (I also found that it was cute enough that I used it as a dress once or twice.)

I got it at J Crew Factory, and it is chambray, although this is its exact cut:
https://factory.jcrew.com/p/wo.....red-shirt-

As I posted in my recent vacation report, I like a caftan dress and a shirt dress as cover ups. Mine are linen and midi length. I'm more comfortable in midi and it looks glam to me DH likes it, too which is a bonus.

Mine are from Lands End and older (indestructible). The terry t-dress, poly so dries quickly, has kept its shape and color, but I would now prefer a button down to a pull over. I also wear it in the summer as loungewear. I also have two ‘bottoms’ like Bijou’s. Both skirted, one shorts and one mid-calf leggings.

I'm with Bijou, JamC, and Lisa in voting for a button-down! I wear an open shirtdress or a men's-style button down with shorts in my bag which I pull on when the suit dries. I had a short caftan from Emerson Fry (which blew away from the drying line when I was in the Aegean this summer: RIP! -- still including in Finds) but frankly it felt too covered on the beach, and the typical pareo or lacey cover-up styles don't feel like me. The biggest "trend" is slightly slinky crocheted things these days, which you will see on younger women and thier moms.

I can't find a decent picture, but for the past two summers I've worn an oversized crinkle cotton collarless shirt from Aerie . It's long enough to cover my butt so I don't need a skirt or shorts with it. The idea came from DD who is more in tune with what's new in swim wear and related items. The shirt and a terry cloth bucket hat - and I was set !

I too have a Ripskirt and I love it for the lower half. My concern is always full (head to toe) sun protection - easy to find pieces at Coolibar, but not sure they do things that could be called elegant?

The most elegant cover-up I ever saw was on my son's gf, who threw on a thrift-shop lace shirt dress over her swimsuit, buttoned one or two buttons, and headed for the shade.

I like coverups like Bijou’s button through shirt dress or shorter tunic style dresses with long sleeves. Both are easy to throw over a dry or wet bathing suit, and provide some sun protection. I have bought them at a variety of stores including H&M, Nordstrom Rack, and DVF. Fabrics include cotton, silk, and polyester. Some can also be worn for dinner in casual island settings!

I have a long button through cotton shirt/dress by swimwear brand Seafolly that is an easy throw on cover-up, not particularly glam, but nice and practical as it does not show wet patches and is easy dry. What is a little more glam is my frilled shorts, which once my swimsuit is dry I pop on and then wear the shirt open.

I also vote for a Rip skirt. Their knee length version has pockets, which the older versions of the skirts I have do not. The Rip towel, which is very lightweight and dries fast, like the skirts, can be wrapped like a sarong. It also has a pretty deep velcro pocket along one edge. The towel is actually my favorite Rip product.

I have a couple of very breezy casual sleeveless dresses that I bought specifically to use as cover-up. Caftans are very popular at the beach and look practical but I haven't any.

I do actually use a kaftan Carla, sorry don’t have an easy photo to add. I bought it in an outlet store 2016 and it has been to the Gold Coast of Australia, Bali, and Vietnam. I originally saw it in a fashion magazine the year before and knew the brand and knew the outlet store! I tend to mainly use it near resort pools though I find, it can look pretty with sandals, a nice sun hat and so on, but in the end I am usually not that comfortable in my swimsuit for that long and prefer to change before going to restaurants or bars.

I have not had a beach vacation in decades. But if I were taking your trip, I would bring my Ripskirt. It is the perfect cover up and doubles as a really nice skirt for daytime and casual evenings. If you had a bathing suit to match you wouldn't need a separate top -- you could just throw on a linen shirt for sun coverage.

Sadly, I don't think they make this length any more. I find it by far the most elegant of the lengths they made.

Anyway -- I use this for all kinds of outings in the summer and would highly recommend it.

Personally I don’t like to use a caftan or dress for this, because I don’t like the feeling of wet legs touching or chafing each other. I much prefer a romper of some kind. Currently I have a Terry cloth one, which feels great but does take a while to dry.

A 10 day escape to Turks and Caicos has been booked for mid February, and I’m planning my travel capsule. We are staying in a condo on the beach and there will be beach time every day. In the past I’ve used gym kit or shorts and a t-shirt as a swim suit cover-up for to-ing and fro-ing from the condo to the beach, or from the beach to a beach side patio for snacks and such.

This time I’d like something a little ‘dressier’ to throw over my suit (if that makes sense.)

If you ‘do’ poolside time in the summer, or warm weather vacations - what are your favourite swim cover-ups? What combinations make you feel ‘dressed’ or a little glam? What fabrics don’t show through if the suit underneath is wet, and/or dries quickly?
