I keep looking at the wide-brim options from Solumbra but have not purchased yet.

What I wear daily is a wide-brim straw hat from Helen Kaminiski. Expensive but it looks good, works great, and fits my largish head.

I have a couple of straw summer hats with wider brims - and a variety of caps.

Good reminder to me that I want a smart city brimmed hat for summer.

I have a big head so often end up in mens ones. Too tight is awful, too loose is also bad.

Fun to see everyone's hats :)
I'm not sun sensitive so never thought I needed a sun hat to avoid burning. But- while I got my grandpa's skin I got my grandma's eyes :/
Supposedly the one I bought is packable- we'll see! It doesn't have a strap under the chin, but it adjusts on the inside, so it can be snug enough.
I thought about a bucket hat for SUP. May be less unflattering on me than a baseball cap!

I love a straw wide brim hat but packable it is not. I have been toting around a widish bucket hat but it is so unflattering! My kingdom for a flattering (on me) packable hat. The ones I have tried do not really hold their shape. (Sorry for the tangent!)

I have two, fitted for a child's size head. One is a Western hat - and Greg has one too! - and the other is a packable straw hat. I wear them on long walks, but not in the wind. In Italy I wore my hat all the time!

I have a huge tinted visor (like sunglasses) that I got at a Korean supermarket. It’s like a headband with a visor you can pull down to look like Darth Vader and has adjustable chin strap so you don’t lose it in a wind gust. It’s so big that if it rains my glasses and face don’t get wet.

I also have a similar visor from Amazon that sits like a hat and has Velcro in back to adjust for size. It was about $18 vs $5 or $6 that the Korean market no longer stocks. I’m all about (cheap) function when I exercise.

I use two hats: The straw Tula is my favorite, but I don't take it anywhere I might need something that can be smashed flat (that's where the Columbia hat comes in). They both have chin straps. The Columbia hat is not as green as it appears in the photo...it's more of an olive with a grayish cast.

I have two sun hats, neither of which I'm thrilled about. They look pretty nondescript. One has a wider, floppy brim, and the other has a narrower, straight brim. I have a smaller head and have a hard time with most adult-size ones. My floppy one is from CrewCuts, the J.Crew kids' line, in XL, and the straight-brim one is from the brand Panama Jack (I got it at Bed Bath and Beyond). I used to have one from American Eagle too, but I sold it because it was very similar to the J.Crew one, and I have only so much space. I wish I could find one that has some fasteners for under the chin, because when it's windy even my snug J.Crew one feels unstable.

My favorite face sunscreen was discontinued, and I have all sorts of chemical sensitivities so I haven't found the perfect alternative yet. So, I've been wearing a hat almost every time I'm outside. Because our weather is mild and I'm just walking around city streets, not doing outdoorsy things, I've mostly worn a slightly floppy wool fedora from the Gap. I just bought a black straw fedora from Goorin Bros for warmer temps. And I almost got the gray wool fedora from the NAS but didn't remember before the sale ended. I'm actively expanding my hat repertoire, but I still don't have the perfect hat for real outdoor activity.

The best hat I ever got was purchased in Lexington, Ky, from a shop that sells lots of them to women going to Keeneland or the Derby. That guy knew his hats & how they worked with face shapes! Are there any hatty locations or events near you?

I like a baseball cap for paddling and gardening because they best accommodate my ponytail. I have a smaller straw style hat for beach/lakeside lounging and one huge ‘walking umbrella’ straw hat bought at a resort in Mexico. Really with all hats as well as sunglasses I find you just have kiss many frogs by trying them all on until you find the right one. And my best straw hats have generally been bought on location.

I use REI fabric hat with wider brim on the back and sometimes the straw hats ( if it's not windy ). The hats usually flatten my short hair terribly - but necessary in high summer especially if there is still highlights left from spring coloring ( all gone now ) .

I've started wearing hats too - mostly for skin protection . I have a couple of big straw "pool" hats , and Nike nylon golf cap (really a baseball cap) and I'd love to add a canvas bucket hat . I actually think straw hats look better as they age and get a little worn in . I still keep mine perched up like little pets on a top shelf to make sure they don't get crushed, but your crotched version should withstand lots of bashing around .

I committed to summer hats after I retired and started spending lots more time out of doors. I wear one of mine almost every day. The Tilley is wonderful! (Thank you JAileen for the reco) It is light weight, relatively cool, and you can just throw it in the laundry for a regular wash cycle and hang to dry. Ties under the chin make it invaluable on windy days and drives in the convertible. The Columbia straw hat is dressier and is also my vacation hat.

FWIW, my recommendation after experimentation is to avoid dark coloured hats since they heat up under the sun.

My sun hats are by Sunday Afternoons. You can find them on Amazon! They make hats for the whole family (my head+hair is large and I usually need a men’s hat).

I have this waxed one that I like in rainy months, and I have a similar shape one (no find) that is 100% nylon with venting at the top. I wear it sometimes to my boys’ outdoor ball games. I can hand wash them and hang dry. They take a beating pretty well.

I also have a couple of baseball caps I like, but find them really hot in summer here. To clean them, I put them in the top rack of my dishwasher and they come out good as new!

I wear hats anytime I will be outside for longer than a few minutes. My skin burns realllllly easily and my eyes are really sensitive to the sun, even with sunnies.

I live in sun hats in the summer and love the looks of yours. I like a natural color and something black and white. The nylon ones can probably even be worn swimming.

My head is small so a one size fits all will not work. I find an adjustable chin strap very desirable to keep them on at the beach or in the mountains where it can be windy. Following Angie’s advice I look in the children’s department especially around Easter. A wide brim is a good sun shade, but I am too small for the big floppy hats. You may need to try on different styles to find which looks best on you. DDIL has a hard time finding hats big enough for her head.

Bend over in the hat to see if it will stay on.
Get something that fits with your style snd wardrobe. You may want a designated sun hat for your swimwear capsule. Good topic.

I see that Tilley has raffia sun hats too! I like them especially because they come in sizes - (no “one-size-fits-all” for me.) https://www.tilley.com/collect.....ca-sun-hat

Sunhats: I wish I could find one that doesn’t look doofy on me. The End.

PS. Mine is a Wallaroo, supposedly crushable. Looks like I took that a little too seriously.

I have multiple Tilley Wanderers for gardening, excellent if maybe a little rustic for leaving home.

Thank you for posting, I'm looking into this brand now, I've been finding that 9 am is the cutoff rather than 10, so I've been heading out at 7 but it's kind of restrictive!

I finally jumped on the sunhat train :)

This is my very first one, prompted by a 3 day long headache I assume was originally caused by paddling in strong sunlight (normally I'm back in before 10). I wear sunnies religiously, but I guess it wasn't enough this time :/

I found this one at a new little shop in town and remembered many fabbers saying nice things about the brand.
https://www.amazon.com/Wallaro.....B07GYXWGHX
Eventually I'll make a proper Find...

Tell me about your sunhats! When do you wear them? Is there anything I need to do to keep it looking nice?
