just saw this...i've done 3 Road Scholars, 1 was a mid winter get away to Spain in fact, 1 was 2 weeks in Italy and and the last was a week in Greece. i love to travel, but am a poor traveler...as i've gotten older, i really dislike the stress of having to negotiation my way around a foreign city, both literally and figuratively. what i like the most about Road Scholar is that most of the "work" is done for you. Want to see Michelangelo's David? they make the reservation and arrange the tickets and provide an expert, they provide tips and tricks to getting around the crowds etc. All of the stressful stuff is taken care of, and there is someone to fall back on who not only speaks the local language, but also knows the locale as well. for example when we were in Venice there was some sort of strike looming and they were able to rearrange what we were doing and when to minimize the impact on our travel
all of the trips that i've been on have been small groups (20-25 people), and for the most part the groups have gotten on well. all 3 of the trips I've been on have included 85%-90% of the meals. most of the food has been good, some of it extraordinary (best meal of my life was at a small winery in Andalusia), and some just ok. same with the hotels.

feel free to PM me if you have questions or want more info.

My parents did the classes, not real traveling, but they loved the course at the Chicago Art Institute and the art glass one in the Pacific Northwest, and ones with multiple topics.
This isn't that useful for you, but maybe of interest of someone else reading your post.

A friend of mine took a Road Scholar trip in the UK a few years back so she was probably in her early 60s and fit and in good health. It was rated as the most strenuous as it involved a lot of walking for long distances on cobblestones or uneven ground. She was quite happy with it but was annoyed with some folks who had signed up who had no business signing up for something so physically demanding. I think they may have been mobility impaired and they always showed up late and delayed the group every time. I guess that goes to show that who signs up for the activity levels is self-selected.

I have a friend who swears by them. They are well organized and the learning component is particularly strong. She’s been to South America, Africa, and Australia with them. She loves the inter generational trips and has taken each grandchild in turn on a wonderful adventure. Another company to check out is Secret Italia (www.secretitalia.it), also recommended by friends.

My mother has gone on quite a few Road Scholar trips. They were all in the US, though. She spoke very highly of them, and encouraged us to try them.

I have heard of them but don't know of anyone who went with them.

Do you know about Comfortable Hiking Holidays, Carla? Just throwing out the idea because I know you are an active person. I know someone who goes on at least one holiday with them a year. Speaks very highly about them. They do go to Portugal and Spain but not sure when.

I have friends who love Road Scholar but they have just been in the US....New Orleans for Marti Gras and New York City. It may depend on how good the guide(s) are. .like tour guides. Both said accommodations were fabulous and they felt well cared for. It sure this is helpful.

Has anyone been on any adventures with the Road Scholar group? What was your experience? I'm curious about a Portugual or Spain experience as a mid-winter getaway, and they have some intriguing offers. I would love to hear from folks who have travelled with Road Scholar - the pros, the cons, and any tips.
