Portugal has apparently become the hot spot for US Foreign Service retirees. Those folks travel a lot and are savvy about property value, etc. We actually have a plan to go explore with some friends who are a few years from retirement and are looking into it. I was there many years ago. Have nice memories. I learned my first few words of Portuguese in Portugal and went on to live in Brazil a few years later, where I actually got somewhat fluent. I need to go to Portugal and see how much language I can pull out of the back of my brain!

My aunt spent a couple of months there and loved it.
My sister and daughters keep telling me about the less-touristy arm of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route that goes through Portugal.

I have a friend who is on her way there right now, and two more who just got home from there. It seems to be THE PLACE right now. I hear nothing but good things. One of my friends even decided to move to Lisbon for a while.

I haven't been there yet, but it's on the list.

Uh, it’s on my bucket list and Madonna lives there.
that’s all the super useful info I have now.

Maybe consider the Canary Islands (also on bucket list)

I am from Lisbon and can surely recommend visiting Portugal. It really kind of depends on what kind of holiday you would like to take. Winter , although not as cold as Toronto by any means(I live in the GTA) is damp and even in Algarve is not warm enough in February to go to the beach.
This year we went in April to Lisbon and had a mix of lovely days to walk around and really hot days.
If you decide to go anytime just send me a PM and I can give you suggestions of places to visit if you would like.

I absolutely love Portugal, one of the most beautiful countries I have ever visited. Of course, Lisbon is a must see, but don't forget to visit Coimbra, Sintra, and Evora...an incredibly preserved medieval town. The best time to travel to Portugal is on the shoulder season, namely April and May or September and October. The weather still will be pleasant, but the crowds of people on holiday will be gone and the prices will be lower.

I love Portugal as we had a wonderful week there with my parents a few years ago.

We went to Sintra - a beautiful palace on a hill top - a World Heritage site; we stayed in Cascais, just outside of Lisbon. Lisbon is a lovely city, lots to see and do and amazing naval museums. There is a fab custard pastry shop near the monument to the discoveries in central Lisbon. We saw cork trees too.

I think it sounds like it could be a wonderful trip.

I agree. Maybe a fall visit timed with the harvest and opening of the new vintages?

Oh no, that's what I feared. You might want to save Portugal for a summer trip, when you can enjoy their beautiful beaches!

One interesting place we went to was Nazare, where the surfers like to go because they have 100' waves at certain times of the year. The town is split into two parts: the beach town, and the town up on the cliff. Spectacular ocean views (that water is cold, though!).

We also very much enjoyed Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, and Sintra. The food is excellent, and of course there are many opportunities to partake of their famous port wines.

@xtabay-what you said about the temps. I did an online search, and temps in Feb are in the low teens Celsius. Definitely not warm enough for hanging out at the beach!

Portugal is wonderful. I've been there twice, and hope to go again. I don't think it will be that warm when you're there, except down south in the Algarve, although it was too chilly to swim or even wear summer clothes when I was there in the month of March. But the planet has warmed up since I was in the Algarve, and for all I know it's tropical now!

Rick Steves has a very good guide to Portugal, with lots of recommendations for places to stay, including small inns and b&b's.
Wishing you a wonderful trip!

DH and I like to get away from the coldest and darkest days of the Canadian winter for a vacation somewhere warm (or even HOT!) we usually end up in the Bahamas or Caribbean, but DH has this idea that we should go to Portugal instead! It would be for 10 days - 2 weeks sometime in February. Some sight seeing, but also some serious beach time. We prefer small inns or B&B’s and connection with the community. (NOT all inclusive closed compounds.)

I’m just starting the research, but would love to hear about actual experiences - from travellers, or residents.
