Great topic!

Pockets are extremely important to me. If a garment doesn’t have the right pocket placement. depth and sturdiness I want, back it goes. The pocket issue is most important to me when it comes to
outerwear, but regardless of type, I want a pocket, because I need a place to stow my hands! I’ve always got my hands in my pockets, so I gotta have them!!

I'm another who likes pockets but it isn't a make-or-break thing for me. One thing with coat pockets though, I don't like it when they have zippers. I always feel like they need to be zipped shut but then I can't put my hands in them. Hate that.

When I am home I must have pockets - phone and many other random things that need to move around with me. I like pockets on my dresses etc. but can do without. Coats must have warm and functional pockets, of course!

Pockets are very important but also problematic re: pants.
I appreciate how some of my no- pocket/ minimal- pocket pants may fit bett on hip so I would be willing to have no pockets in something like fancy dress pants.
But for everyday life I like being able to put phone in one pocket and keys in other— if too bulge-y for an occasion, I would put them in handbag.
So many modern jeans have inadequate pockets.
Cost pockets ( not blazers) MUST have “ correct “ placement, angle, depth. A deal- breaker.

After some air travel last year I realized how much I liked the security of zipper pockets, for my small travel wallet and my phone and maybe a couple other things. So scary to realize something has kind of squeezed its way out of your pocket while sitting in the plane, or going to the ladies.
So much so that I have been moving toward some very specific travel capsules and that may include “technical “ garments, sporty items. Most important for lightweight jackets ( what I might be keeping on in the car or plane/terminal - whenever I travel again!) and the pants. Ideally these are very wearable at home in their seasons, since it’s no good to have very many things saved up, and maybe going out of fit or otherwise deteriorating.
Since I expect to keep doing more walking and at least trips to local or state parks, that can still be a goal. I am trying to look at it as a challenge to find the best combinations of style and function ( re things like pockets, comfort / movement but sleek or well tailored ) and see if I can practice PPP.

I appreciate a good pocket, but poorly designed pockets bother me! The ones that stick out on the sides of pants, or the ones that hit at just the *wrong* spot on dresses, or the ones on coats that are entirely the wrong angle to put your hands in...

Now that I have a good selection of toppers and small bags (especially my little Patagonia fanny pack) I'm a lot more relaxed about wearing outfits without pockets. I would really like a "garden dress" of some sort with big patch pockets on the front, for layering over leggings and pocket-less pants, as in the photo below.

Many of my clothes have pockets, and I, too, appreciate pockets. However, they are not all-important to me. I usually dress in layers, so if one of the items I am wearing lacks pockets, this will seldom be a problem, as one or two other items will likely have pockets. Every item in my wardrobe doesn't need to have pockets.

I’ll stand over in the lonelier corner — coats/jacket-y things aside, I dislike any but the tiniest, key or card-sized functional pockets.

I’ve have had them cut out of jeans, pants, and dresses. And I’ve had them stitched closed in many garments as well.

Some of it is for how empty pockets lay on me, but much of it is to disliking the way stuff in pockets bulges out and especially how it *FEELS.* Just ugh, haha — esp when it’s just one side of the body.

What can I say, I have a whole princess/pea thing with pockets!

I ADORE pockets. On everything. (Except shirts, I guess. I never use the breast pockets on shirts.)

Skirts and dresses with functional pockets are the best. I personally prefer hidden ones (sewn into the seam) aesthetically, but sometimes the big patch ones work too depending on the style.

I still have and wear skirts and dresses without pockets, but I honestly find myself constantly wishing they had them. Every. Single. Time. Like, even just walking around inside my house, it's nice to be able to stick my phone in my pocket, you know?

Outerwear without pockets is a travesty. So impractical. I have a denim jacket that has both regular outside pockets AND a big, flat inside pocket where i can put a small wallet or keys, and it's the best thing ever.

I also much prefer the look of trousers with both front and back pockets as well, although I do not like the ones that stick out in weird ways. (100% agree with the commenter above that I like how they break up the vast expanse of uninterrupted butt, lol.) IMO, jeans-style pockets (especially the front ones) that sit flat are the most flattering, even on dress pants.

I don't think I've ever owned a jacket without functional pockets but on pants it's more of an aesthetic requirement than practical. I rarely use back pockets but I don't love a vast expanse of uninterrupted butt view. Side pockets are pretty standard.

On dresses and skirts, prefer not as using them would detract from the appearance but I'm thinking that my over-serious attitude towards dresses and skirts might explain why I don't own any.

I like 'proper' pockets, but maybe not on bottoms. I have too much 'junk in the trunk' & wide hips for anything to actually fit into slim trouser pockets, lol. On the other hand, most of my skirts are usually A-line - I have some with deep pockets but I find that it drives me crazy to feel my phone or wallet constantly slapping against my leg. I would much rather just tuck my phone into my waistband or bra :P

In an ideal world, I would be able to wear jackets or coats with pockets everywhere, so I could easily go about my day hands free - but in reality, it's too hot for at least 6 months of the year here to do that.

Since I teach, I need somewhere to keep my room keys & phone when I'm outside of the office (& preferably my wallet, so I don't accidentally lock it in my desk drawer & only realise once I'm already halfway home - not that I'm speaking from personal experience, of course... lol!) Shirt pockets could be a good alternative, but I find that they often sit at a weird place on my bust. So my solution so far has been to keep everything in a slim belt bag (that can be converted into a crossbody bag by adjusting the strap).

Conclusion: I love pockets, but they don't seem to love me back

Lack of pockets is not a deal breaker for me. In the past, I have sewn shut pockets that add extra floof to an area of my body that needs no help in floofiness. I am not the person who routinely puts stuff in pockets. BUT since Covid, when I am trying to streamline what I have in my hands when I do my occasional grocery shopping (with mask), I do find pockets to be utilitarian and useful. I do appreciate pockets in coats, jackets, etc.

Yes, pockets are important to me for all the reasons that you mention.

Yes, I would buy a garment with non-functional pockets - If I really liked it a lot - and then I would have the pockets redone.

Yes, once I sew the pockets shut in a pair of slim pants because they looked better this way.

And yes, when I buy something I pay attention to the pockets. Well done pockets are a plus!

I like pockets on coats and jackets that are functional and deep enough to hold more than some tissues and a credit card. I find patch pockets at hip level add too much bulk and are extremely unflattering. I do like pockets on skirts and dresses when I can find them.

I like pockets but they are not a deal breaker except for coats and robes.. both need to have the pockets in the side seams, not patch pockets. I love when a coat has interior pockets that zip. Certain times when allergies are bad or if I have a head cold, useable pockets are essential .

Pockets on shorts or bottoms I walk in are important to me so I can carry my phone. They aren’t always easy to find. I don’t usually worry about pockets on dresses, as they rarely are sturdy enough to hold said phone.

I am a fan of pockets if they are deep enough to be functional, well-placed, and do not add bulk or awkward lines.

I have cut out and stitched closed the back pockets on chino style pants and shorts because the pockets bunched up in the wash and did not lie flat — who wants that on their bum?

One of my peeves with so many denim brands these days is that the pockets are so darn shallow I can barely fit my car key in them.

And I have a jacket with pockets that are placed on the side seam, which means they are too far back on my body to be useful. Why??

I’m with Suz - I like pockets on dresses and skirts, quite a bit - but not a deal breaker. Mine are always good for a mint or a gum wrapper, ha!
I think pockets for me are a more fashion preference rather than a functional need, with the exception of coats. I like the casual vibe of pockets, but seldom use them for keys, phone, etc.

I like pockets in dresses if properly placed. I take most trousers to my seamstress to tack shut. I really dislike gaping pockets. I don’t use them in a utilitarian way. I do like deep pockets on outerwear, for walks so I can bring keys, tissue. S

I definitely pay extra attention to pockets. Especially hip pockets, interior pockets (on toppers), and their placement, entry, and depth. I have purged toppers, outerwear, and pants based solely on the lack or quality of their pockets.

I won’t buy a coat or jacket that doesn’t have an interior pocket large enough for my phone and wallet, but that’s mostly because I rarely carry a handbag anymore. I also won't buy a topper with zippered hand pockets because my hands or gloves will get caught on them.

Come summer I don’t wear toppers, so pockets in summer bottoms are really important. 3 of my 6 remaining skirts have pockets.

I am a fan of pockets. All of my outerwear has pockets, and I have considered increasing the size of their pockets. I rarely wear skirts, so I am not going to discuss the pockets on those garments. My jeans and other bottoms all have pockets.
I do a lot of walking, and I use the pockets to carry things. I have started using my fanny pack, but that doesn't always work with my outfit, like a big bulky winter parka.

I am not a fan of pockets on anything but coats. On dresses, skirts and sometimes trousers they puff at my hips. I dislike mismatched patterns on shirt chest pockets. I find them more a distraction than a help. I wear jeans frequently, so there are pockets, but I do not use them.

A coat pocket is useful to hold my gloves and or keys if I am out for a walk. I also like to see internal pockets that are large enough to hold my cell phone.

I need to rethink pockets, because I definitely see myself as the type to pick up heart shaped rocks, interesting sticks and whatnot.... :-)

I am a fan of pockets. Most of my pants, shorts and dresses have pockets. Only a couple of my skirts do. When I wear toppers and jackets, I prefer pockets.
With covid 19 I only wear items with pockets, so I can stash my cell phone and a super small zip wallet, with out having to carry a handbag.

Way too many of my clothes do not have pockets. OTOH, I can sew and why don't I put all my efforts into adding them to everything, since I love them? That's a nuisance to do, though, in my eyes.

I would never close off a pocket in order to appear sleeker and I like zippered pockets so things wouldn't fall out, except that I don't like the scratchy feeling. Though I do stash things in pockets for convenience, like carrying food upstairs and could stick a diet soda can in there, mostly I crave pockets for sticking my hands into. This feels very important to me and when there are no pockets in jacket or pants, I find myself flailing around and have to square my shoulders, take a breath and bear up.
