I’m not a fan of irregular hemlines on me (except for high-low, which was trending for a couple of years (!) but seems dated now). But I can see how they look fresh and add interest. And even if the trend will pass, it may only be after years, and at that point you can still decide for yourself if you are still comfortable in those pieces.

I think the green dress with the double point hem... one on each side... I think that one will date fast.

I like interesting hems and like Brooklyn don’t think they are a fleeting trend. These are my dresses and skirts with uneven hems, they have a nice swoosh factor without too much fabric.

I vote give one a try. There are so few things that truly date now - and it takes a while. I love midis but don’t have interesting hemlines on any.

Most of my midis are handkerchief hems or asymmetrical. I find the uneven hem more interesting and more flattering on my calves. It’s funny, I didn’t even think about the issue of them dating more quickly than a regular hem! But I suppose eventually the whole midi skirt look will go out of fashion too. I vote give it a try

I have had the same question in the past, whether an unusual hemline will make something look dated. But as you point out, that very feature can add a little verve to something that would otherwise be very classic and maybe feel a bit "boring."

A month ago, I bought a trench from Anthro that has a handkerchief hem. I hesitated because of the hem, but I'm very glad I got it. The hem does indeed give the coat more playfulness and movement than if it had a straight hem. I'm hoping that since the rest of the coat is a very classic cut, it will stand the test of time.

I also bought a skirt last year with a handkerchief hem from WHBM. Again, it adds a little edge to what would otherwise be a very classic dress. The dress is a floral print, and it would be a little too feminine for my style without the special hem (I think the hem adds in some angularity to constrast with the softer fabric).

So my solution is to buy just a handful of pieces with unusual hems. That way, I can wear them frequently while the trend is still fresh. If I get too many, I run the risk of not being able to enjoy them sufficiently before the trend changes.

Yes. There are two summerdresses waiting with handkerchief hems. First time to wear. I like how the hems are midi but show also a bit of leg. Looks good with my sturdy calves.
I would like to try a skirt too. Don't know how all this came about.

Love fun hemlines A handkerchief hem skirt and/or dress will be a very likely addition to my closet this year. And some flamenco asymmetric ruffles likely too

Gretchen, I'm ALL over the midi - with any style of hem, but a lot of it is asymmetrical. See Finds from my wardrobe.

I love the swoosh, and that I can wear the look with flats. (I don't know how new this is for me. Have always loved it - but the trends were again me).

LOVING the look for you. Go for it.

Angie suggested looking at a few different options on my June dresses topic, and that led to an eye-opener for me.

Is anyone else feeling a renewed interest in different hemlines? The handkerchief/scarf hemline feels fresh to me - something different than a typical line, and adding some visual interest. I was also really drawn to skirts that have a more asymmetrical hem.

I worry that these types of styles can become dated quickly, but I think I need to add to my shopping list and see how they can spice up my more classic pieces.

Thoughts?
