My hair is not very long and very layered. I find a silky scrunchie holds a lot better! I also love any sort of headband and have quite a collection. I also have two sets of very pretty beaded bobby pins that I will use to pin back strays here and there. I also have a couple of clips that I will use on just the front if it drives me too crazy. I don't like wearing hats indoors, so hats aren't really something I use for hair-holding purposes.

so I used to have long hair, but for many years now it's been quite short...or it was until 2020 came in. Over the summer I used clippers on it, but haven't touched it since August or so -- so now I need to use hair accessories again for the first time in a long time.

I've largely been relying on my collection of thin scarves, which I also use as belts -- so they're longer scarves, really a bit too long for hair, but such is life. Here's a pic I took yesterday; the scarf is one I picked up on a trip a few years ago.

I feel like my thin scarf collection is both a little dated (I haven't added to it since 2017, although I've added some thicker scarves since then) and too slippery for hair. Going to have to figure out some good options soon! I'm considering making a couple with leftover quilting fabric.

I am intrigued by the spin pins, since my hair is too thick for Bobby pins. I worry that spin pins would get tangled in my very thick, wavy/curly hair. I am afraid to use anything that is coated with silicone for the same reason. I use plastic claws and plastic hair combs with a straight edge. They stay in my hair, hold it in place, and are easy to remove. I do not like anything with sharp metal edges because my hair snags and breaks easily against them. Recently, I have been able to tuck my hair behind my ears and it is long enough to stay in place. No clips needed, and no hair in my face either!

For exercise, I usually pull my hair into a low ponytail. I use silk covered bands. I think they cause the least damage/breakage. I find it annoying to have the lump of a ponytail press against my head or neck when I do any exercises that require laying on my back. I often find myself changing between the ponytail and loose hair during workouts!

I like France Luxe accessories. They have very nice barrettes, claws, hair sticks, pins, headbands, etc, in a variety of beautiful colors and designs. They are of good quality and do not pinch your hair. They have nice sales twice per year and their customer service is excellent.

Ficcare has been a great clip for my longer Covid-growing hair. There used to be 3 sizes at Nordstrom and I am using the small and medium...one silver and one sort of stripy grey and white. Just twist and clip seems to work, even though I don't have as much volume in my hair as I used to. Spin pins have worked too, but not as secure.

This is a technique, not a style, but I think you’ve been braiding your hair, so maybe you’ll have fun with it.

Mine is different colors, started going grey with a streak on my left side in my 30s. My top layer has gradually all become grey, but the undersides are still dark. When I braid, I like to make the sections by color. I think that makes the finished braid more interesting to look at. I haven’t attempted this for French braids yet, but it’s easy for pigtail braids.

When my hair is long enough to do an updo, I use the type of clips that nemosmom posted (although I get mine from J.Crew). I also use large barrettes and have some decorative bobby pins. I have two thin headbands; I've never tried a thick one.

Your post has made me think more about my hair accessories. I used them a lot more when I had longer hair. Now that I have a chin-length bob, I don't think about them much. I'll have to do some experimenting!

I am pretty boring ... I use plain black hair elastics for ponytails and that's about it. I will occasionally wear a small black scrunchie for comfort's sake, but I leave the fun and colourful ones to DD, who wears one daily. FWIW, I may revisit this though, now that I've seen how chic Dr. Biden looks in hers!

I love the idea of one of those hairbands that looks like a hair wrap of sorts, but I don't think I'd feel comfortable wearing it out and about; maybe for the pool though.

And I also have a plain, neutral baseball cap on my wishlist for summer outdoor activewear.

I am not a fan of ponytails. They hurt my head after a while. I do wear them during Yoga, but that is the only time. I use bobby pins to put my bangs back when they get too long and to put part of my hair back. I have lots of nice hair accessories, but I don't seem to use them.

I would consider trying a claw style thingie again for just holding my hair back around the house, since it's gotten so long, but I just use the ponytail holders and they seem to do the trick.

I am a hair accessories failure. I can not, and never have, been able to use a claw, i just can’t seem to figure out how to make it actually work and a couple of years ago, I bought the clip that MsMaven is showing, thinking it would be easier than a claw, same thing, i cannot get it to actually hold my hair.
Want does work for me is the simple and the easy, headbands, but only the ones that actually circle the head, see pic #1, the slide on things pic #2 don’t stay put. I don’t love love the old fashion big scrunchies, but i do like this leather one, and i have some small satin covered hair elastics that i like. Not sure that any of this is fashion forward or trendy, but I’ve seen a lot of headbands on etsy, so there is definitely a current market

Carla - spin pins are incredible for any kind of up-do-ish kind of thing. From a messy bun to a sleek french twist.

You simply put your hair in a pile or twist, screw one pin in, then screw in the second pin so it touches the first.

I hold my hair in a ponytail with one hand, then twist the "tail" with my other hand, wrapping it into a bun or pile. Then, I corkscrew the first spin pin into the pile or twist (I insert my first pin close the end/tip of the "tail"). Then, I corkscrew the second pin at an angle so it criss crosses the first. I don't know if there is a science to it, but I just feel for the section of hair that feels loose, and screw the second pin in there. Voilá!

I was introduced to them by a friend who has shorter hair than me, and she is able to do the sleek french twist type styles, and uses shorter version on the pin (comes in a 3-pack). ETA find (also comes in blonde, but I couldn't find a Find)

I used them on Halloween a couple of years ago to create my Leia head muffins!

I have resisted the return of scrunchies. I don’t do much with my hair even though it’s gotten long — I hacked at it again yesterday and was kind of alarmed how much hair was in the towel after stopped cutting, but I let it air dry and it doesn’t look like a shrub, so I guess I didn’t mess it up too bad. In fact, I may have successfully thinned some of the thick portions that were giving me the cocker spaniel look.

The only hair accessory I use these days are the ponytail holders that look like old-school telephone cords. They hold pretty well and seem to last a while. I have some old basic black elastic ponytail holders that are fine too, especially if I want to do pigtails (for yoga so I don’t have to lie on the ponytail on the back of my head). So my hair accessories are strictly utilitarian, not fashiony. I think I gave away all my barrettes and clips years ago.

MsMaven, I thought I still had that clip, but I just looked in my hair accessories. It’s not there. I must’ve given it away in the move. I never could get on board with the idea that I should learn 14 ways to do my hair. Of course, now I realize that I didn’t have to learn them all at once, lol. If I recall correctly, I did try a French twist kind of thing with it, but it couldn’t hold my hair. -\_o_/-

I'll keep experimenting, and yes, maybe I will look for some helpful ideas.

My 19 and 21 year old love scrunchies in a whole array of colours and fabrics. I use non metal black elastics, smalll claw clips and a bandana to keep my hair back. I also have a wonderful collection of winter hats. Soon to start a spring/summer collection.

@ nemosmom - I’ve seen those spinner pins, but haven’t tried them. Are they easy to use? (Relative to regular crinkle bobby pins?)

@ la ped - I’m actually not a fan of the single ponytail, for the very reason you don’t like the claw. It’s not comfortable when there is something pressing on the back of one’s head. I’ve been doing plaits for when I’m wearing hats these days. Loose hair gets blown around, even when wearing a hat.

@ suntiger - Bobby pins to hold it away from your face, or to ‘put it up’ in some sort of style?

@ Synne - nice hat inspiration. I’m looking for a knitted tuque or beanie to ‘go’ with the new burgundy puffer. Haven’t found anything yet.

@ MsMaven - that clip looks to be a streamlined device. I believe Duchess Kate Cambridge was wearing padded headbands around the time her 3rd child was born about 3 years ago. I’ve never seen folks wearing it Irl, but have seen it featured in fashion pages and street style pics. I think Christina has sported the style.

@ shevia - good to know! It’s the young’uns that set the trends!

I’ve never used a claw before. It looks easy, but can it hold up a lot of hair? Do you need more than one? My current hair accessories are covered hair ties, crinkle bobby pins, and wide barrettes. They are from Goody. Are they the main brand of hair accessories, or are there other good brands?

*I have a hair appointment for March 17th! Will go for a shape/trim but plan on keeping it long enough to pull back or style up..

MsMaven, does the clip work for you? My mom gave me one a few years ago. I think it was that one anyway—came with a book of something like 14 ways to use it, which she thought was great. I couldn’t imagine sitting down and studying it all.

As to what's in, I haven't a clue. Everybody else I see seems to have thick hair and a strong scalp that holds anything. And my granddaughter on Zoom who pulls one little clip our of her hair and shakes her thick, healthy mane at us. Sigh.

I've had a hard time finding the right accessories for my fine, straight hair. Best so far are cloth covered scrunchies and claws. One of the best I bought--not sure where I got the hint to look at it--is the Ficcare hair clip. Expensive but holds my hair. I think I got the last one Nordstrom had. I haven't tried others.

I used to have some combs and barrettes that did well with my hair, but the versions I bought last year don't work at all well. I'm giving away a pile of failed items. Someone here suggested a headband, but I haven't tried that yet. Something about childhood memories . . . not happy look then.

I did read a WSJ article today on how people want to dress better on Zoom. It recommended headbands like Amanda Gorman wore at the Inauguration. She's started a trend! I'd like to try on a couple of these.

https://www.huffpost.com/entry.....717eea9d15

Bad clips and bobby pins just seem to pull the hair out of my head.

More love for claws! I am at the point where I wear them everyday. Also hats. My next craft project will be a crochet sun hat and a faux fur cossack hat.

I added a few scrunchies and claws last year once my hair got long enough for them to be useful. I get the sense both are kind of trending right now? I *love* the way claws hold hair back loosely, but they are annoying when driving, and are incompatible with hats and helmets.

My hair is too slippery for bobby pins -- they invariably slide out and end up on the floor (I've had this happen onstage countless times; it is such a pain), and I've tried all the "extra grippy" kinds. I have a bunch of barrettes; I like small ones to hold my bangs back when they reach awkward lengths, and will sometimes use a big one to pull back more, like a half-pony but more polished.

I have some seamless/metal-free hair elastics, similar to these, that are MVPs right now. I mostly use them to make pigtails, which I find look nicer with winter hats than a single ponytail does, and are more manageable than having my hair down (zippers!). I even manage to be matchy-matchy sometimes.
