Carol, I know -- I used to wear chisel toes in Toronto no problem. And even in Kingston for a while -- though Kingston is all about the freeze/thaw, and gets awful ice.

That's not the issue here. The issue here is that I walk on trails as well as roads/ sidewalks and the trails are a mix of rock, gravel (slippery when wet or too dry), roots, dirt, needles, wet leaves, etc. So a shoe with a tread is required.

I love my well-worn chisel-toes, Suz! I 've been wearing them out in mild winter conditions with no slip issues BUT streets and sidewalks are well salted/sanded by now, which may account for the lack of issues. Haven't worn them in non-sanded winter conditions to compare.

I'm in Vancouver and went into the Australian Boot company to try different styles on today.

I did not buy anything but came away with some helpful info.

I wear the 4.5 in the women's heeled boot. It fits well and I don't need an additional insole because the tilt of the last and the extra rubber on the heel means I don't get PF from it.

But I want a flatter boot for my walk/hikes.

I learned that I need a size 5 in the round toed or classic boot (women's or regular) but that in order to make it fit even remotely, I need TWO insoles -- the regular Blundstone insole and my superfeet green insoles.

Half sizes, as someone already said here, do not affect the length in Blundstones, only the width-depth. But you don't need a "high volume" or wide foot to benefit from a half size -- it also works better for anyone with a higher instep (that's me.)

I wear a 4.5 in the chisel toe and can fit my Superfeet insole into it.

The chisel toe would probably be my best bet for a flat Blundstone -- but the problem is that the treads on that boot are not as grippy. So I'm still in a state of indecision but at least now I know what size I need in which style and how to make them fit me properly.

So they are sort of a warm-ish cream. Hmm. I don't wear cream as a rule, or brown...but if they work with denim and don't read TOO warm, that is probably enough for me.

For Suz and anyone else who is interested to see the Blundstone Pearl colour. Photos taken under two different light sources. Tried to show the colour relative to white jeans, off-white scarf and beige sweater. Added some grey in the second shot for additional reference.

Carol, I'm intrigued by the Pearl, too. I also like the blueberry classics. I'm bringing my insoles to Vancouver so I can see if I can get a fit at the store -- my Eccos are already driving me nuts after 2 months (of admittedly constant wear). It's not that the Eccos are bad. But they have stretched out a bit in places. Grump.

Style Fan, Redbacks are great. My husband wears them and so do my farming friends (which include women). They don’t wear Blundstones because they say they are over priced now! I wonder if they have the same sizing issues. I’ve never tried them.

Another update. The women's high shaft boot that I thought was white is actually a pinkish off-white (they call it Pearl). I'm a bit disappointed, but I bought a pair this afternoon to better assess whether I think I can work with the colour - or whether I'd want another colour altogether.

I wore mine out and about today in wintery but not deep freeze conditions. No slip issues, but then again, all the ice is well-sanded by now so not so as hazardous. This thread inspired me to try on a winter-lined pair, but the lining takes up too much real estate inside the shoe and my foot felt crowded. Sizing up didn't seem to help.

Today I tried on the unisex rounded toe and the women's cut rounded toe (not the women's cut with the heel). Interestingly, the unisex version felt short (maybe because my heel slid forward), and the women's cut, although a bit narrower, actually worked quite well. The women's rounded toe version has a bit higher shaft, which I might like with some types of pants, so those are definitely on my radar now. Thanks, Carla!

and PS -- the women's flat comes in white, which kind of catches my fancy right now....

Re hiking -- I think it would depend on your conditions -- and your youth! I see young people wearing them on some of the trails, but many of the trails I frequent are either wet and slippery, or very dry with loose gravel, or full of boulders and roots. I need a boot with grip. Of course a fall would be much worse at my age than if I were 20 and back then I might have hiked in such a boot.

For urban/ suburban walking and light trail hiking, they would be perfectly fine. Except on ice. But then, nothing is really good on ice!

No experience myself, but my 28 year old daughter and all her outdoorsy friends wear them all the time. I asked her if they were a pain to get on and off but she says no, that they are the most comfortable boots she's ever had. She wears them hiking too, in fact wore them on a week long 50-some mile hike in Ireland. I have considered them myself but hesitate because of the pull-on aspect.

Thanks for this thread, Carla - I've been researching Blundstones this year. One of my friends lives in them, turned on to them by her super hipster struggling singer/actor daughter who lives in NYC. I watched her work hard to get them on and off when they were new. I like how they look, and the reviews of how they wear.

Definitely need to find a place to try these on for sizing...Great feedback, everyone!

Docs come in different versions/ lasts but the classic ones need break in for sure. Blundstones are not like that -- the leather is much softer.

I'm going to take my Superfeet to the store to see if I can get a proper fit in a more casual boot, because honestly, my Eccos, while functional for now, are not going to last me more than a year.

Thanks all! A local independent shoe store carries the brand, so I should be able to try them on, and thus not have to worry about wonky sizing. It will be an interesting experiment to see what fits best: women’s boot, men’s boot, or half size.

I’m glad to hear they are a boot that is generally comfortable ‘out of the box’. I was worried that they might be the kind of thing that needs to be broken in (which is what I’ve heard about Doc’s.)

Blundstones are, believe it or not, something like the national winter shoe of Israel. Yes, that's right. My son has lived in them for years. They do not last forever with him, but he wears them hard. I have a second hand pair I stumbled on for hiking (they are black and DDs only wanted tan or brown). My daughters used to wear them as their winter boots but have moved on (I thrifted a pair of original Doc Martens for one, and the other favors Timberlands.) The one fail was my husband - he never found his comfortable.

I have never owned Blundstones, but have explored their website of late with an eye to perhaps adding some next year. Interestingly, the boots I preferred were only available to the Canadian and US market!
Re sizing, I’m with Brooklyn, in that they appear to adopt a mans boot size as their benchmark. A bit like our other iconic label R.M. Williams, who have a whole other sizing system. (Makes it difficult if you are ordering internationally).

CarolS, I can’t explain it. I am reliably an AU size 9 to 9.5 in sandals or 10 in boots (which equates to an EU 40 or 41). So definitely not a 7! It’s like Blundstone has adopted its own unique sizing.

My sizing experience is like Carol's. Truly, they do not fit according to any scheme I understand. In the women's boot I wear a 4.5 which they say equates to a 7.5 US. But, I have never in my life worn or needed a 7.5 shoe of any kind. I always wear a 6.5 or 7 US, or better, a 37 EU.

I have the same weird issues (with different numbers attached) with many British shoes.

I have tried Blundstones many times. They would work with my style, but they do not work with my feet. I found my foot was swimming in the boot. I have pretty average width and volume feet.
Mr. SF had a pair, and he gave them away. He found them very uncomfortable.
Maybe you will have better luck.

Brooklyn, I'm interested in your comment about sizing. To compare experiences... I bought what is called a size 5.5 AUS which the Blundstone Canada website equates to a U.S. women's 8.5 or men's 6.5.

Blundstone Canada's site also says half sizes are wider than full sizes -- which doesn't negate some members' experience of the boot being wide -- it's just a bonus for those of us who need some extra width.

Carla, I am another fan of Blundstones. I have had mine for about 14 years and always find them the best boot for winter. There was no break in period but this was probably due to the style I have being leather lined as opposed to the oiled leather that may be slightly rougher inside. I did have to play with the insole and have settled on a thicker wool insole. The insole issue was because my style boot is a men's so there was a little more room in them than I needed. Like Brooklyn I keep them well conditioned and polished, a small price to pay for the reward every time I wear them.
They have a very good grip sole and keep my feet warm and dry in the Vancouver rain.

I love mine and found them comfortable right out of the box. Sturdy but not too heavy (not nearly as heavy as Docs). A little difficult to take on and off because of the tight webbing at the shaft. I have found I have to keep the polish up to them, as the colour wears down at the toe (I do wear them a lot in winter).

On the AU sizing. AU women’s shoe sizing is the same as in the US, so it’s not AU sizing that is the problem. I think it’s the fact that these are essentially sized for men. Mine are a size 7 but I’m not an AU size 7. I think that explains why they run wide too. (And this applies even though my boots were sold here in Australia as women’s boots.)
