Ooh. I like your encapsulation. Very clear summary. Funny, I bought a lot more at Talbots when I was younger...

They invite me, but I have never gone. Maybe I should reconsider.

I am liking the first looks of fall, though. I am on a list of women they send the early catalogs to and we give them opinions on what we think of their offerings.

For a 40+ career woman, I love Talbots. Both for their office wear and their weekend stuff. Quality has always been good, and they have stuff designed for office jockeys.

Sterling, I got an email mentioning the local area shows - had to call the store to put my name on the list for the show, and to reserve a fitting room if wanted. I get the feeling that they do this every fall, although this is the first year I've participated. I don't know if they do it in all locations or not.

JAileen, all of the ladies who did the modeling were older - most 60+ and a couple 40-50. It was really refreshing to see the clothes on 'regular women', actually!

A week or so ago a woman I know, a retired teacher, told me she had some event at Talbots. I wonder if this is what she was involved in. She's around 70 and loves all things Talbot. She might wear a cute sweater or have an interesting handbag, always from Talbots. I bought a couple of dresses there last year, both covered with butterflies. I really like them.

Re reversible ruana: I saw a beautiful one on Nordstrom, Rag and Bone. It's kind of expensive, but looks fab.

Laura, thanks for the detailed report. I forgot all about it.

Sterling, I've been spending a little more there lately and do put it on my Talbots card, which is also relatively new. I don't know if either of these are the reason I was invited. I think I received the invite in the mail on a postcard, but it was a while ago.
But, I did find this link, so I think you can invite yourself.
https://www.talbots.com/online.....TrunkShows

Today I attended the fall trunk show at my local Talbots store. It was lead by the company's corporate stylist, and featured several local women as models. Being Talbots, everything was quite classic and leaned toward preppy (seekers of edginess look elsewhere!) but it does seem like Talbots is making a real effort to balance modern classic with trends and looking current, especially for their core clientele who are 50+. (I feel like they're being more successful with this than Chico's, and who knows what Ann Taylor is off doing right now...)

I took some notes about the trends the stylist mentioned, and some things I noticed in the model outfits, for those who might be interested:

Trends for fall:
coat length items, mid-thigh (sweaters, vests, jackets)
vests
leather
feminine accessories, and the combination of feminine with casual
mixed metals

Items of note:
reversible ruana wraps - can be worn as poncho, wrap, scarf
sweater-knit ponchos
fuller-leg pants - one style was semi-fitted to the knee then gently flared
quilted jackets and vests - vests particularly worn under blazers, wraps or coats (very New England)
animal print
crossbody bags (smaller size, but not wristlet sized)
reversible wrap-type vests
wearing a grouping of pins/brooches, esp on sweaters
fine-wale corduroy: also in boyfriend-cut pants, and blazers
pattern mixing, inspired by home decor
slouchy turtleneck sweaters
rolled-neck blouses (very 60s reminiscent)
feminine blouses - drapier fabrics, floral prints, paisleys etc.
