I suppose it depends on how much light there is in the room...windows, exposure, light colored walls. I have a fancy camera that I can only figure out the half of so far! (and maybe not even) I got it for Christmas last year. Perhaps there is a way to have the flash work for you, Antje...I am not that familiar with using a flash...it might be a whole new thing to discover. Good luck trying some new things!

Thank you so much, Judy, for all that good info! Unfortunately, my only full length mirror is mounted to the back of the bedroom door, and across from the big windows. That might make things tricky. I will, however, leave the flash off and take pictures in daylight (most of my past attempts were at night.) Or maybe I need to enlist my 6 year old daughter again to take pictures... She loves to, but I'm trying to avoid this, since I don't want her to focus so much on clothes and outfits (yet ;-))

oh I meant to say this...can't edit so I'll correct it here:

"Ideally you want the light source (natural only will be better color and sharpness) to fall on YOU, not on the mirror, either full on you or from the side, but not from behind you, or I think you will end up in the shadows!"

Using mirrors to bounce light back on you, from the side, I experimented with in this photo (but I'm embarassed of the dirty mirror!):

I would love to!

Antje, here's what I've discovered the last few weeks trying it a couple of times:

I agree with Tanya, turn off the flash...it should be in your menu settings. Is your full length mirror portable or attached to the wall? I have a cheap one from Target that I can move around. Ideally you want the light source (natural only will be better color and sharpness) to fall on YOU, not on the mirror, either full on you or from the side, but not on the mirror, or I think you will end up in the shadows!

Here's is a post of three photos I took, all in a room with just northern exposure...notice how in the one in the middle has light coming from the side...this gives more shadow or movement to the clothes and subject...the ones on the ends are both with the mirror next to the window so the light is pretty full on coming on to me.

oops...better do the link http://liminal-judy.blogspot.c.....on-me.html

On most digital cameras, you press the shutter down half way to focus and then all the way down to take the shot. Even if it's all automatic, sometimes there is display button you can press on the camera so the little box where it is focusing will show. Even if it doesn't, plan on that what's in the center of of the shot is what will be in focus and also, what the camera is metering on. So try to have your body centered on that spot. I see people have good luck by holding the camera in front of their face...this helps because you can see what you're taking :)...and also, you can brace your arms against your body a bit so the camera doesn't wiggle...and your pic will be a sharper image.

Notice in the photos that I have my arm against my body to steady the camera. Still, some come out blurry...I took a few shots...that's what's so great about digital, you can just hit delete and throw them away Like putting together outfits, it's a bit of trying this and that, armed with a little knowledge and a playful spirit.

I have zoom on my camera, but it's harder to take a sharp photo when zoomed...I crop them later in iPhoto (way easier than it sounds)...it's just a couple of clicks of a mouse!...and everything you don't want is removed from the photo.

Does that help or have I overwhelmed you? I hope not!

Hmm, I take mine without flash at the brightest spot and time of the day when there is a lot of sunshine. Sorry this is not too helpful.

Some of you successfully take photos of yourself in the mirror. What's your secret? I tried doing this, but the photos turn out awful, with a big flash distorting most of the picture, or the pictures are too dark to really show details. I don't have a particularly fancy camera. Any tips appreciated.
