Wow Rachylou thanks! I want to be more sophisticated but feel it's a journey I've only just begun. (Hearing that old Carpenters song...). My friends don't usually tell me I look sophisticated...they say nice things just not that. My mom does say it once in a while. Anyway, made my day!

Sally loving your comment. I'm already thinking I need to get a second pair or maybe one in another dark color. These were a find in a boutique that carries clothes I think of as "boomer who sticks with vintage hippie" or "what you think people wear on nantucket"...I'm not into either but I like their jewelry. As Angie says, leave no stone unturned!

Chris those pants look great on you. I like the styling with the light coloured top. Once you've discovered slim black pants and a sweater that you can wear with them, there is no going back...I wear them everyday. They are so versatile and take the thinking out of outfits.

Thanks so much YLF ladies for your generosity, encouragement, and kindness.

Ledonna your comments about self confidence are truly words to live by.

Sara I know what you mean about taking time to layer necklaces. It takes some trial and error..

Janet, your words about skinny jeans are resonating...and thanks for comments about the jewelry.

Suz thanks for the "blossoming" comment...and you are right I should try this top with white pants.

Angie, thank you profusely, as always....

Muffin...you hit an important point about looking better when you are not trying to hide...it's really true

LisaP yes, yes, yes and will try with white pants and gold jewelry, good idea.

Shevia...it's the eternal question, isn't it? Wish someone could tell us the answer....

.
Liz - yes I love the wide plank floors too. The original section of my house is over 200 years old and those "pumpkin pine" floors are in most of the rooms. We don't do colonial style decor in most of the house but the place I take the photos does have a braided rug.

RobinF, Maneera, Jaileen, Summer, BrieN, Lyn......thanks for the comments about the curved hem etc

...one other note...I also bought that top in a coral color and am now convinced that it's a keeper too. Both were from Loft.

Can't thank you all enough :-)

Very pretty ! I find both pieces flattering and modern, and you've thoughtfully accessorized the look....which is also important . I always tell myself that fitted and less voluminous and less shapeless pieces are ultimately more flattering that hiding under shapeless or baggy clothes . Let's not all get into another debate over choosing volume or a JFE look ....I mean taking that confident step in wearing more fitted pants and a top is a good one And I too think another version of this outfit with white jeans and some gold accessories would be beautiful on you - especially with your hair colour.

I think you look fantastic! I like where the hem hit the cross of your shoe and the layered necklaces adding interest up top. Like Suz, I think white jeans would also be gorgeous. I too am pear shaped so I understand your trepidation with closer fitting bottoms. But sometimes I think when we aren't trying to hide our shapes we do look better. And the confidence gained by exercise (& this group) can really be transforming--way to go!

Great post, Chris! I also am very self-conscious of my hip/thigh area, so I can relate. I think that these curved hemlines can be really helpful as they keep the eye from traveling straight across a horizontal line right where we don't want it.

I remember when I first decided to try wearing skinny jeans -- I had much the same feeling as you about how they would emphasize everything I tried so hard to hide. But I was stuck in a bootcut rut. I had seen a photo of Christina Hendricks wearing skinnies and thought, well, if she can rock them, maybe I can get away with it too! Now I would feel lost if I didn't have some skinny jeans in my closet. Our eyes definitely adjust. Even though they might not be my absolute most flattering style of jeans, I figured out how to make them JFE.

I also feel better when I am more active, and we've been having such lousy weather (and I've been so busy with other things), that I've been having a hard time getting in the kind of workouts that help me feel better. Kudos to you for your increased activity!

Your jewelry is a really fun touch on the outfit.

I frequently take pictures of outfits that I don't think look as good as the outfit in real life. I think it's the angle and also that you're not seeing a 3D view and the movement of the outfit.

I really like this on you and love how you layered your necklaces. Layering necklaces is one thing I have problems with - I can get really picky about it and spend 30 minutes trying to get the lengths just perfect.

I'm inspired by the "taking a stand with my summer body" series, although the change I'm making is more of a year-round one. I've always been very self-conscious about the size and shape of my thighs combined with being short and short-waisted, and have always made "minimizing" my hip/thigh area a top priority in outfit choices. I went with dark colors, straight leg, boot cut or trouser styles, and shoe-covering pant styles. Also avoided at all costs a horizontal line across that part of m body. (in summer I do wear Bermuda shorts). Not very stylish, often quite frumpy, but has been my comfort zone.

Something in my perceptions has changed. Last night I wore this out for dinner with friends. This is the first time I've EVER worn "slim" pants that follow the shape of the leg and hit around the ankle. (I hemmed them longish so cuffing is an option but not required). This sweater is new, in a pale green that's almost grey. I really like it in spite of it not perfectly fitting some theoretical definition of a "thigh slimming" shape.

Part of me does not like what I see in these photos but part of me is fine with it an that is a HUGE change for me. I actually think I look better in person than in these photos...there is something about the angle of the selfie..

My self confidence is improving in part because I'm working out more and feeling stronger (and maybe a little bit leaner) and in part because of the many encouraging comments and discussions on body image on YLF.

I am so thankful to have found such a wonderful community and want to thank you all so much!
