Thanks, Angie! I think it's the toughness of the faux leather that I love. I did return both sizes so I'll keep a lookout for something cut for my shape.

For example, one of the reviews of this one says: "I will say that I find this dress fits a little big -- especially around the arms and shoulders."

ETA: ok, I ordered this one in chocolate brown, we'll see what happens.

Wow - so much to consider that I may return both and hope a similar-but-just-right item comes my way.

No worries about me having a zero-sum NAS, I have 3 pieces of keeper outerwear from this year's sale
(Photos to come, now that I am SLING FREE!)

What Angie said. You can take in the side seams from below the armhole down to the hem. Note that in order to do so, you'll have to let down the hem for several inches at each side, then restitch it. The re-stitching may show, because once you stitch through leather or faux leather, the hole is permanent. Even if you sew right over the original stitching, it's very unlikely you will hit every single hole the same with the sewing machine. It may not be very noticeable unless you look very closely, but it's a consideration.

I think dealing with armholes and necklines is much harder than altering the sides of a shift dress. I say that not as an expert, but as someone who sews casually, and alters things on my own. The person may want to adjust the darts on the back, as well as the sides. I still think that would be easier. If you have both sizes, though, why not let them decide which alteration would be more successful?

Probably not as much as you suspect. And you can bypass armhole suppression too - unless you want to keep the A-line integrity of the silhouette. Does that make sense, or do I need more tea?

As noted elsewhere, I ordered the Theory faux leather mini shift dress in two sizes.

The smaller is just right in its lower width, but the armholes and neck are somewhat constricting on me. Not dreadful but I suspect if I wore it all day I'd be dying to take it off.

The larger is better sized for me in those openings, but needs a tailoring nip in at the sides.

Our tailors: will a nip tuck of the side seams render the armholes tighter so that I'm right back where I started? What do you think?
