I am also interested in the answer to mayapple's question as it is basically what I was trying to ask a few weeks ago. The large boxy t-shirts I only use for painting the house or some such work. The Boden shirt I do consider to be a t-shirt and I do wear these more fitted kind but I am trying to get away from wearing them too often because I find they often don't flatter very well and they seem very casual. Living in a very warm climate in the summer does not really make them useful for layering pieces (I mean it's so hot here in the summer, you don't really want to layer at all). On the other hand, alone they are an easy solution to the heat problem but I am looking for alternatives.

Hmmm. I would say I do wear T-shirts as a staple, usually paired with jeans or khakis. Short-sleeved or sleeveless for warmer weather, and long-sleeved for transitional weather. As a SAHM of two preschoolers, tees seem to be the most practical for my daily actitives: they allow ease of movement, if good quality they take a lot of abuse, and they are relatively inexpensive to replace if irreparably damaged. I do not wear printed tees, and I am making a conscious effort to replace boxier tees with a more shaped fit. Any suggestions for alternative staples that would meet my criteria?

Mirah, you can wear round neck tee shirts w/out looking too busty if you look for a scoop neck opposed to a crew neck. But, I have managed to find a few crew necks that, for some reason, don't make me look busty. I'm not sure what makes them more flattering--but they do tend to be a thinner fabric, snug fitting and the neckline is very high and not a ribbed opening. (The fabric of the shirt goes right up to the top and just folds over with a narrow hem.) I know one of my favorites came from the Gap. Maybe Angie can tell us why some high necks work on busty women, and some dont.

The round neck ones make me look more round and extra busty somehow. So they are a strict no-no. However I use a few V neck ones in the gym and very light ones under sweaters in winter as a layering piece.

Fitted Tee shirts, like a layering piece---yes I wear them as a smart casual layering piece, with a cardigan or other lightweight sweater and a fun necklace. Usually with jeans, but also sometimes with less casual pants and skirts. I prefer V necks and couldn't imagine living without a black one in my closet.

Loose Tees that advertise something or someone--no.

The only exception is I wear my Red Sox Tees to any baseball game I go to--semi pro or the real thing. But I prefer "girl cut" tees, and in the early spring or late fall, I'll wear a long sleeve Tee under the Red Sox tee.

I wear t-shirts (the shapeless rectangle kind) around the house for doing work and when I do aerobics and yoga since I don't have any other "gear" specifically for working out. Other than that, I have a fitted black t-shirt that I wear as a layering piece, an off-white t-shirt that's not so fitted also for layering, and three other fitted t-shirts (pink, navy and cream with a picture of a horse on it) for ultra casual events like bus trips. Since I’m still in college, I think the non layering t-shirts are still OK as long as I kept them fitted.

I wear tshirts around the house, while running quick errands and when camping/hiking. I don't mean a nice day walk, I'm talking about backpacking for 2 weeks in the mountains. I also wear them when doing yardwork and other chores and as a layer when snowboarding. Otherwise, I don't generally wear them.

What do you mean by t-shirts, exactly? The big shapeless ones, or just plain knit tops? I got this one last year from Boden and I love it: http://www.bodenusa.com/col.as.....38;col=COR

The fabric is dense and has maintained its shape well. I like to wear it in the summer with a patterned skirt or layered over another shirt in the spring.

I admit I enjoy looking at the tshirts on threadless.com, and I'm actually wearing one now...but the catch is that I'm wearing it as lounge gear. It does nothing for me on top, just makes me look even more rectangular. I gave up on tshirts mid-college. I just found other things that looked better, and I realized that wearing silly pictures on my body was probably contributing to people thinking I was still in high school.

When I do yoga, I prefer something sleeveless as I tend to get quite hot. Other than that, I can't find any reason to wear them.

The T-shirt is an American staple for both ladies and blokes. But there comes a time in our lives when we need to say goodbye to T-shirts, or at least demote them to what I call “gear”. Do you wear T-shirts? When and why do you wear them?
