I've heard that Ann Taylor is a good option for good basic tees, especially elbow-length sleeves. Not sure if you have that as an option for you though.

I bought an interesting T at JCrew a few weeks ago, but it's no longer online. It's one of the "optic dot" patterns, so it's not a solid... but it doesn't feel like any T shirt I've ever worn! It's cotton, but is a bit firm, if that makes any sense. It's not thick, but not scrunchy, either. It doesn't cling to my lumps and bumps, which makes it perfect for me. Just thought I'd mention it in case you have stores that you can check, and also in case they have it in other colors or solids. (Mine is the navy/green optic dot combo.)

I am on this quest as well. Here are my results so far.

I bought a couple of colors of this: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/ca.....tback=5092 Deliciously soft and has a nice sheen, but the black one seems to have its stitching unraveling after being worn and washed once. These are slightly snug in the bust, so I would consider going up a size.

I also tried these: http://www.landsend.com/pp/wom.....19_59.html and found the fit nicely non-clingy in my regular size.

In my experience, tees look nicer when they are not 100% cotton. A little stretch and/or a blend of fibers creates a nicer sheen and drape.

I bought some nice V necks in Myer last weekend- I think they also had round neck ones.

Loft have had some good ones- but you have to use a mail forwarding service as they don't offer shipping to Australia

Thank you for all your suggestions - I really appreciate it.

kkards - Target in Australia does stock nice quality t-shirts, but never in the colours that I am interested in, just black, a true red and usually some fashion colour - coral/watermelon is everywhere at the moment. Navy always seems to sell out in any style that I like!

KL - thanks for the reassurance about the opacity of the Jcrew tees - they have a navy blue boat neck that I think I might just try - their shipping to Australia is free until December. I really like how Jcrew has so many colours.

Mary and Dianthus - I had a look at the Gap website, and you're right, they seem to only do a few colours. No boatnecks either...I wonder why?

Are boatneck tees a weird style to want?

Deb - I have never heard of Eddie Bauer before, I will check them out.

The Eddie Bauer Favorite T's are my go to t-shirts. They are a very nice weight, have a slight shape, and come in various necklines and sleeve lengths. Thery wash beautifully. I like my t's on the longer side so I order the talls. http://www.eddiebauer.com/cata.....8;Ntk=IALL

You are talking about my dream tee shirt. I am currently wearing a Gap. I love it. Can we do better? I am going to try J Crew. I'll let you know later how they are.

I've found J.Crew's perfect fit tees to be nicely opaque--I had a light pink tee that I would wear nude bras underneath, but I wouldn't worry at all about navy, rust, or gold. With regard to sizing, I take a XS in the JC perfect-fit tee (although I've only tried their long-sleeve crewnecks, not the boatnecks) and my measurements are approximately 32 bust/28 waist. I can also wear the XXS for a shorter sleeve and very slim fit, which I use strictly for layering.

i'm not sure if target australia is the same as target here in the US, but i have always found their tee's to be the best. i have found the fit, and the fabrics to be equal to the j crew tee's; but at significantly less cost.
here in the US, they have a "regular" fabric weight, and a tissue tee. the tissue tee's will be too sheer for what you are looking for, but i like them with a same color cami.

I have always had good luck with the Gap basic t-shirts. The don't cling and are a good weight. They also come in scoop, v-neck, and crew in the basic neutrals. The scoop is a bit deep but a cami works well with it.

Thanks Caro! I know what you mean.

I've just ordered three of these:

http://www.katies.com.au/KATIE.....da__081813

in white, citrus and mandarin.

$1 shipping this Sunday and knowing that instore returns with Katies is really easy made me just click away and buy.

The cap sleeve shape looks at the right angle to me on this tee. I will find out about opacity/quality/colour when they arrive this week.

I would prefer a higher neckline, too, but we shall see.

Still need a navy blue tee though!

I am lacking in the plain coloured top department and would love some nicer t-shirts to make my clothes into outfits.

I really want opaque, shortish sleeve (cap sleeve to 3/4), boat-necks, or high-scoops, in a nice cotton that skims, not clings.

I work with teenage boys, so my modesty requirements are quite high!!!

I am in Australia - I would prefer Australian outlets (because then shipping isn't an issue) but I haven't found what I want or in the colours that I want - navy blue, rust, gold.

I found some perfect-fit boatneck tees on Jcrew that are pretty much the style that I want, but I am not convinced that Jcrew's sizing always reflects their size charts.

http://www.jcrew.com/womens_ca...../97516.jsp

I also don't know how opaque the t-shirts are. I wouldn't try to wear a crazy-patterned bra underneath a light coloured t-shirt anyway, but if you imagine being in close proximity with 16 year old boys, you'll know what I mean about opacity!

Does anyone have any recommendations?
