I don't really have a system. Most tops I only wear once (along with undies) - but other clothes I will wear several times - especially pants, jeans, skirts and jackets. If I'm having a good week, I just re-hang them back in my closet - but if I'm not having such a good week, they are draped over my bookshelf (which only makes my week a little worse!)

I have a section with hangers in my closet for items that I don't wash after one wear. However, jackets and pants, I send them back to their original places. Also for most of my tops, I do wash them after a day long use. I find this especially important for my white shirts (of which I have many) as they otherwise get ring around the collar that's hard to remove.

I once saw an "organizational " expert say that one should hang all the hangers in the same direction and that as you wear pieces you should put them back going the opposite direction ( turn the hanger around ). She said this is a good way of spotting what you don't wear, too.

As soon as I get home from work, I hang up my suiting, dress pants, skirts, dresses, etc. I don't purposely air them out, but rather just let them hang for the remainder of the week until I'm ready to put them away. And I alternate Dryel and dry cleaning. I sit behind a desk all day and only really get them dirty when I have a run-in with lunch ... usually a blog of greasy ranch dressing.

I wear my jeans usually just for short periods of time to run errands, etc. and don't wash them often at all to avoid fading as I usually lean towards dark wash jeans. Everything else gets tossed in the hamper.

I don't have much trouble with this. I re-wear jeans and occasionally sweaters/jackets and bras. Anything I have worn once goes on a rack behind the door. I have oily skin and tend to sweat, so everything pretty much goes in the wash. I find if I wear a shirt more than once, even if it seems clean I will end up with back acne. Same with wearing a bra for more than two days.

you girls are all very innovative!!

I never rewear a top, or underwear, so they go straight to the wash, but bottoms and outerwear I hang on a shelf in my bedroom (the shelf houses my hat box and I just hook the hangars over the edge of it so they balance precariously LOL).

But, I wash at least one load a day between the kids clothes, mine and all the other *stuff* that seems to accumulate, so if something has been hanging to be reworn and I haven't reworn it in the week or so, I usually just chuck it in with my next load.

As for the shoes... Kirsten I feel your pain!! Mine are generally put on my shoe shelf neatly, but my 4 year old loves to play pretend "balls" and spends most of her days trying on my shoes to decide what will suit her ballgown, and then she leaves them strewn all across my floor LOL!!!

This is a great thread. Currently I drape my worn/not too dirty jeans and pants over the edge of the 3 bin hamper (the 3rd bin is mine and not to be touched by my laundry-doing husband). The problem is that it grows into quite a stack. I fold cardis and put them back with the clean cardis. T's get washed after first wear.
I like the limbo shelf too. I'll try that.

Do people hang up jeans? I'm slowly building up my woven wardrobe, but most of my clothes (including jeans) still live in my dresser drawers...well, they're supposed to! I have shelving in my closet that could serve as a temporary holding place for slightly worn clothes, but then I feel like I would be scattered in the morning trying to find things. Anyone else feel like that? I like all my shirts together, all my jeans, etc. Otherwise, it's "wait, did I wear that already this week, let me look over there," etc.

I have a 'clirty' shelf for clothes that have been worn but are not dirty. If the item is something that needs to be hung up I use a white hanger rather than a black one. Then on wash day I look at the clirty shelf items + white hangers to see if there's anything that could be washed

Kristen, I love to kick off my shoes, too, and I will have shoes all over the house if I'm not careful! The way I deal with it is to have an ironclad rule that shoes have to be collected and put away before I go to bed. It takes like two seconds and makes life so much easier and more orderly!

I also rewear most bottoms, sweaters and jackets. I'll also rewear a buttondown if it was only worn for a few hours or if I wore a cami underneath. My current method is to hang whatever i just took off on the door of my closet. it has double bi-fold doors. They air out for about a day. yesterday's clothes won't be rehung in the closet until I hang up today's clothes for airing out. usually a jacket will be turned inside out to make sure the under arm area is good to go before i rehang. i'll typically wear a jacket until i stain it or it 'feels' like it needs washing. if i sweat all bets are off and it goes right into the laundry basket. same goes for being in a smokey environment. anything that still smells 'worn after being 'aired' gets tossed into the basket.

jeans are a different matter. i try to keep them new looking as long as possible so I'll rewear those until i take them off and they walk over to the hamper themselves, lol!

What a great thread! Elpgal, I really like your system and I might try to do something similar in the future.

Socks, tights, leggings, underwear, camis and all the tops worn right next to the skin get washed immediately right after wear, so they go into the laundry bin or dry clean pile. I wash my bras after every second wear ( min 2 days break between wears) so in the meantime I hang them on a set of over-the-door hooks in my closet. Obviously anything that is stained or clearly dirty goes in the wash immediately as well.

I try to wash jeans and knitwear worn over other layer as seldom as possible since since washing really damages it. So most of the clothes after wearing get hung on those same hooks at the back of the closet to air out throughout the week. On the weekend I look at them and determine if they need washing/cleaning or not, and if not put them back on the hanger in their usual spot in the closet.

I give items like this a light spray of fabric refresher (like Febreze) and then hang them up to air either on my drying rack or my deck clothesline. After they've aired for a few hours they get hung back up or put away.

I'm still trying to find the best number of times to wear a set of pajamas. I make sure that they are for sleeping only (not lounging or cooking) and with the spray-and-hang routine, I usually get 3 nights out of a set.

Is your pajama system the same as your clothes?

I just wanted to comment that this is a great thread! What a lot of good ideas. My current "system" is to pile up my "half worns" on a stack of books (Hey, I finally got a dresser recently!) or hang them on a hook. I LOVE Elpgal's idea.

Kristen, LOL about kicking off your shoes! That is SO satisfying, isn't it?

I kick mine off right after work, let them air out in a special spot near my 'dressing chair' and replace them to their appointed cubby hole when choosing my ensemble for the next day. Which is usually after supper, and before I collapse in my bed!

I am fine with rotating and storing my clothes until it's time to wash them, my problem is my shoes!! I can never seem to put them back in their cubby holes after I've worn them, so there is perpetually a pile of them in front of my closet.

Anyone have a good system for that?

Great question! I hang the items I'll wear again back in my closet. Things I wear more than once are jeans/pants/skirts, cardigans or sweaters that I layer on top and wear only for a few hours while out of the house, jackets and such. Anything else, and all summer stuff goes to wash after each use. I don't really use the dryer for my clothes (only for underwear, socks and gym stuff and sweatpants or t-shirts) and even with the often washing, they've been holding up pretty well.

elpgal, that's BRILLIANT!

I just put things back where they go and keep wearing them until they need to be washed. It usually works ok. When I'm about to do laundry (once every 2-3 weeks) I look over what's still hanging and grab anything that isn't full on dirty, but has been worn several times and shouldn't be worn several more times without being washed.

I give most things the sniff check and if it passes, it goes back into its spot in the closet, unless I am not going to wear it for at least one week. When I go do laundry and there is extra room in the load, I am generally pretty good at remembering what I wore that week, so I can pull these lightly dirty things out and fill in the rest of my load.

Hey Mo. My system is simple, yet effective. Anything that gets sweaty or wrinkled, is hung up in the laundry room, then placed in the laundry bin and eventually washed with a sorted load. Jeans can often be worn more than once, unless sweated in (see above) or too stretched out in the knees. Since I wear jeans daily, I do a jeans load twice a week. I have a special brass hook on the inside of my closet for tees and tops that are 'lightly worn' and can be worn again. PJs and yoga pants are switched out midweek.

My hubbie has a special place in his closet for the 'ready to be washed' clothes. I trained him well....

I throw my 'once worn' items on top of my freestanding full-length mirror (which does rather make it difficult to use the mirror when it's piled up!) which is in the corner of our bedroom. Usually it's jeans, which I will wear twice if I didn't do anything active in them, or sweaters/cardigans that were top layers. If I wore a blazer and it can be worn again, usually it gets hung up and placed on the over-door hanger overnight so it can air out, then back in the closet.

I use different colored hangers for worn clothes. Once I get home, I transfer worn clothes to these hangers and hang them on the closet doorknob so they air out a bit before I add it to the rack. It's usually the knits that clutter my closet.

I separate the worn/clean sections on the rack with the unused hangers so nothing touches.

I launder all camisoles, bras, undies after a single wear.

I have the same problem - end up with piles or "lightly" worn clothing on my dresser! I have a ladder in my closet that goes up to my attic located in my closet and so I sometimes hang clothes on here. I think an over the door rack might be a good solution. I also saw a picture of someone who had a nicer coat rack in her bedroom which I've always thought was a great idea. I just need to find the right one!

Yeah, I don't like to hang my worn clothes next to my cleans either!

I usually wear items twice before washing (except underwear, socks) I try and hang everything thats been worn on one side of the closet and fresh items on the other side. Except when Im lazy, then they get set on the opposite side of the bed overnight....

I rarely launder things after one wear... unless of course there is sweat or spilled food involved. I just hang it back up in it's spot in the closet. I don't worry about trying to keep track. I know when something feels or looks like it is ready for washing. I think usually I can tell when I take it off of the hanger that it has been worn once.

Items like jeans and other washable pants and some washable tops worn over another layer get hung on a hook on the inside of the closet door to be worn again soon. I often change clothes during the day when going out and change back for dog-walking, etc.
