Thanks for this thread (hearted it).

My SYC thread is here:
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....very-wordy

My reasons for SYC are listed on that thread but, generally speaking, I want to do SYC so that...
- my shopping habits are more consistent with my beliefs and values (somewhat similar to what Kate posted above, ethical buying v. consumerism),
- to use the money spent on clothing to pay off some small debts (should be done by December), also I have spent way too much so far this year
- to not buy a lot of clothes until I lose weight and to use the clothes I have in different sizes prior to buying more
- to better develop my style and really evaluate what I am looking for in the future.

Very interesting. I think my main reasons for SYC would be to have less stuff, then the next priority would be to use the money for something else. Home improvements, or savings. I do save money every month, in addition to my clothes shopping hobby. I used to feel guilty about shopping but I no longer do, really.

Kate, what you study is really interesting. I spent time in China in 1980 and the changes today are phenomenal. I believe this is due in part to globalization although I am sure there are negatives associated with this. But it does seem that the overall standard of living has improved for quite a few in China since then.

Awesome, Devon! I'm so glad you are going to do that. Let us know how the volunteering goes!

Some of you have mentioned feeling frustrated with not knowing what your style is, and I can really, really relate to that. I'm just now nailing it down myself. An online friend of mine introduced me to a book called The Style Statement, and while I didn't buy it, she was going through the process on another forum and posting her results. I started it as well (based on the questions she posted and answered) but haven't finished it yet. The most helpful thing was the very first "assignment", which was to grab a bunch of things from around your house that mean a lot to you make a diorama of them and take a photo. Now, whenever I shop, I ask myself if it fits this visual image in my head that I have from the photo. If not, I don't buy it. If it does, I will buy it. This saved me big time because otherwise I would have an orange print dress in my closet that I maybe would have worn once instead of a black and white print sheath dress that I have worn many times.

My experience with SYC in the past has been similar to Kim's. I have learned a great deal about myself, my style, what I like, and what I don't like. I found myself appreciating what I have more and wearing what was in my closet more as well.

I had to do SYC from September through December last year because I overspent. I went back to my "regularly scheduled" shopping during the after Christmas sales. By that time, I knew what I needed and was shopping more with a purpose instead of just for sport, as Kim said.

Of course, I have done some back-sliding since that time and now need to do SYC again. I feel a lot of different emotions now. I feel ashamed at having spent over $3000 on clothes, shoes, accessories, and alterations this year. I feel sad that I will be able to do very little shopping for the rest of the year. And I also feel excited at the possibility of learning to embrace and appreciate what I have more. I hope to discover some fresh combinations for my wardrobe and to love more and more of what I own.

I would love to be able to have a small wardrobe. I can see the beauty and simplicity in it, yet I tend to always buy too much and end up with a wardrobe that is too large to be all that manageable. I have a smaller wardrobe than I used to (I used to fill 3 large closets!) and I do love more of what I have, but I would really like to have less, especially since I don't work in an office and have many days when I don't leave the house/home office except to go for a walk or to the gym. It's all a work in progress, though, isn't it?

A note to Kelly, who responded to one of my earlier posts in this thread. I love your suggestion for me to volunteer at Dress for Success! It sounds like a perfect opportunity for me, and I learned that there is a branch near me (I'm in San Diego). I'm going to check into it and hopefully it will work out and be a win-win situation!

I recently did a wardrobe overhaul. It was pricey. I need to spend some time in my own closet enjoying my new acquisitions instead of chasing every trend. I started some time in late winter, so I am all set for spring and summer clothes.

I may be singing a new tune come winter but that is a long way off at this point.

I did a 3 month SYC last winter and was pleasantly surprised by all that I learned about myself at nearly 50 years old that hadn't occurred to me before.

I started it because I was shopping for "sport" after a while and was constantly finding another "perfect" thing, but sometimes not even wearing it once before I acquired the next perfect thing....

It felt like a good idea to know that I could "quit any time I wanted to..." (Sound like an addict? LOL)

It was easier at first and at the end, but in the middle it was tougher. I did fall off the wagon a time or two, but over the whole 3 months only spent under $50.00.

I have to say that the biggest lesson for me was that I'm *much* harder to please now with the things I am willing to bring home and add to my closet. I *often* come home with nothing, and am quite content. I realize that I *do* have enough and that's a very good feeling. I can make what I already have work for any situation, so no need to rush out and buy a new ________,

It was hard, but very freeing, and I highly recommend it to anyone who would like to learn a few new things about their own psychology! LOL

CocoLion - I've been thinking about this again due to how sensitive I felt above about my budget. $2,000 is 10% of my income for the year so it is a significant amount.
I feel guilty that I've managed to spend more than that already, even though it does't affect my overall financial position, I still save a significant amount each month, pay all my own living costs and have no debt. So my money guilt is prabably misplaced, so there are other issues at play aswell.
One of the other issues is that even though I've spent all this money this year, I still feel like I have nothing to wear. I hope that if I SYC I will use the things I have already (instead of buying new things) and if I don't like something, work out why that is, so that I can avoid purchaisng things in that style again. So I think I'll be posting a lot of photos of items over the next month looking for inspiration, looking for opinions on why the item feels 'off' and whether items should be kept or not.
There are probably other factors at play which I can't quite articulate e.g. environmental norms and my age.
Long post sorry, this really has me thinking about why I'm doing this and what I hope to achieve.

Denise, for me it’s a combination of those things.

-	My undergrad student loans are deferred until I get my PhD (or drop out of grad school), but I’m trying to pay them off now because they’re still accruing interest. I don’t have to do this, but I’ve decided to make it a priority for my long term financial well-being.

-	The money I spend shopping doesn’t prevent me from fulfilling true needs (shelter, food, utilities), but it can help me finance other wants (travel, entertainment, laser hair removal).

-	I don’t have too much stuff, but I have been moving towards a more minimalist lifestyle, and clothing is the one area where I definitely have far more than I need. I’m not going to pare down my clothes to the numbers of a “true” minimalist wardrobe. I’m still trying to figure out about how much is the right amount of clothes for me to still have fun without having so many that I’m “weighed down” by excess.

-	There is some guilt and philosophy mixed in there too. What I study/research is intertwined with my life philosophy. I study organizations, stratification, globalization, and development (or lack thereof), and other subjects that are mixed in with the clothing industry (along with pretty much every other industry). It feels hypocritical to criticize companies for their practices while continuing to purchase their products. I may never be able to fully “de-link” from the system, but I’m trying to be more mindful of where everything I buy comes from, how much I use it (and how much I need it), and where it goes after I’m done with it.

I'm team SYC right now, mainly because I purged my closet of items I wasn't wearing and aiming to do more with less. Part of it is financial and part of it is I'm at a point in life that I don't need a whole lot of stuff to look pulled together. While I do have my eye on a couple of winter clothing additions, for me it's all about the accessories.

My reasons, Denise, are that I do have enough and don't get the wear out of my clothes that I should. Also, it is a habit of sorts to hunt down the perfect _____ for the season. But then there's another perfect _____ to be found, and so on. Debbie said it well - "I have to learn to get by with less AND be happy with less." Or as Sheryl Crow says, "it's not having what you want - it's wanting what you've got."

I understand being strategic and wanting those perfect investment pieces. I think my downfall is that I buy too many work clothes for the limited amount of time I am actually at work!

I think one other reason (other than financial) that I don't shop/buy a lot of new things, especially "investment pieces", is that I have two young children...and I cringe a the thought of getting cereal or spaghetti sauce thrown on something I love that cost a lot of money! Last winter, I bought a faux leather moto jacket and while I would have preferred leather, I knew this one was the more practical choice. I got a ton of wear out of it and was sad to put it away when it got too warm to wear it. And I didn't have to worry about it getting ruined.

I also generally shop my closet and don't often buy new things because 1) I share a closet with my husband and there simply isn't room for me to have a ton of stuff 2) After 2 cross-country moves where I got rid of tons of stuff, I just don't want to accumulate a lot of stuff 3) I want to really love the clothes I have and get a lot of wear out of them 4) I got interrupted by my 16-month-old and forgot what I was going to write here ;)

Now, not going physically shopping/buying doesn't stop me from browsing websites ALL THE TIME!

I am curious what inspires people to SYC? Is it, debt? Is it, you need the money for other things? Is it, you have too much stuff and feel overwhelmed? Or is it, a sense of guilt rather than something driven by need? Or, a philosophical choice?

I spent today away from YLF, so I'm just catching up on all of the new SYC action. I started SYC this month (you can read my post here: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....opping-ban) and I'll be SYC through the end of the year. So far so good. I unsubscribed from all of the store emails, and I haven't set foot in a mall this month. I have allowed myself to browse online, but I've been putting more energy into finding stores that have a focus on producing ethical clothing than scouring the selection of my usual stores.

Kelly, I've become a much more strategic shopper over the past two years, so sometimes I'll go a month without shopping if I don't see anything I love. For me it's not about buying just anything, but buying the perfect thing, even if it's an investment. The problem is that if I keep on buying these investment pieces, my cost per wear will never be low because I simply can't wear everything enough when I keep adding new pieces!

I've been pleasantly surprised at how easy SYC has been for me so far. Granted, I'm not even a full month in to my six month commitment. But it's been easy for me to just tell myself that I'm not buying anything, and then just not buy anything. I don't have to do this, I could choose different priorities and continue to spend the way that I have. But the reality is that my clothes shopping during the first half of this year doesn't match up with my priorities. The more I think about my goals that either compete with shopping or just have little to do with clothes, the easier it is for me to be happier about not shopping than I would be if I were shopping.

First of all, I am SHOCKED that Mo is 41! I was definitely thinking early 30s...

Second, I have spent over $3000 on shopping this year! Of course, I know that there are many people who have spent much more than that as well. It is all relative and there is no right or wrong. I just lament the fact that I can't seem to be able to stick to a budget, no matter how high or how low. I always seem to push the envelope.

While I definitely think I am making better choices, I still make some poor choices that I live to regret. I sometimes am unable to return the poor choices, too, and have to just learn from my mistakes.

I know I have 200+ items in my wardrobe and I don't really need so much, especially since I work from home and have days where I either don't leave the house or only leave to work out (and hence am wearing "gear"). I have to learn to get by with less AND be happy with less. I think that a period of SYC will help with that, as it has in the past. It also helped me to shop with a purpose instead of just to see what's out there. Then I buy to fill actual holes in my wardrobe instead of to buy what's bright and shiny, so to speak.

I am happy to have met some kindred spirits here. I hope we can learn and grow together through the SYC process.

Oh no Mo it didn't come across that way. I just think I'm trying to work through some feelings I have regarding my spending and shopping habits so am feeling a bit self-conscious.

Rachel, I'm sure you spent a lot less than many people. I think all of our budgets range greatly. I have always been a bargain hunter so I could easily have spent double for the same things if I just bought right when I saw someting that I like. But another factor is, being 41, I have literally decades of shopping under my belt and some clothes that are now old enough to drink Anyway, I didn't mean to imply that $2000 was too much! Sorry if it came across that way!

Mo, I know my budget was high (well for a student). When I set it I was like, 'oh that's heaps surely I won't spend that much' and then I did. And when I look back over the list of stuff I got, I'm not super thrilled with all of it. Even my friends shake their heads at me, I see something I like and I buy it. I really have no self-control. I'm hoping that if I start to work out my style and what gaps I actually have, I can reign myself in and spend smarter. I wlecome any advice because boy do I need it lol.

I feel good that I have only spent $1000 this year!! That includes running shoes, socks, bras, the works . . . . anyway, I digress. I am like Anna, in that when I'm back to work, I am in a uniform so I only have so many days a week to wear my 'fun' stuff. So that in itself is sobering in relation to the 150+ pieces I have in my closet. Moreover, I have enough already

Congtrats chewyspaghetti on avoiding temptation at target. I work in a mall so have to try avoid temptation every shift which I'm not very good at lol.
Kelly- I just buy things. I definitely get the shoppers high but I also get shoppers regret because other than clothes shopping I'm very careful with my money. Also our returns policy isn't as generous in NZ as elsewhere so you often can't return things if you've just changed your mind on the item. I think that part of my problem has been that I'm not honed in on my style so I buy things and then they don't actually fit in with the reality of my life.
The reason I'm on a SYC is the same as devon7, I've already blown my budget for 2011. I gave myself $2,000 for the year (I'm currently a student so that was very generous, but don't worry I don't have any student loans) and I've spent $2,500 already and I won't realistically make it to the end of the year without doing more shopping. So my SYC is just until September then I'm allowed to shop but hopefully I will have worked out what I'm actually lacking in my wardrobe. Even though I'm doing the SYC, yesterday I went ball shopping with my sister and I looked in heaps of shops and was like oh I want this and this but beacuse I was on SYC I didn't get anything. If I still want them in a month, it's highly likely they will still be available or most probably I will have moved on.
Good luck for everyone else on SYC, we can do it : )

I should also say regarding shopping, one reason I don't shop a lot is because of the location where I live. I have to drive 40 minutes just to get to a Kohl's or Target and a very tiny mall and 2+ hours to any major mall. I look online a LOT but don't often order because I don't want to bother with paying return shipping fees. I usually keep a list of things I want to try on in various stores for when I actually am in the vicinity of them.

Devon,

As I read your post, what came to mind to me was rather than turning shopping into a career, what about finding a way to volunteer your time to those less fortunate? Two things that stood out to me about what you said were that you shop to fill an inner emptiness, and you always find yourself wanting more. If you were to help with something such as "Dress for Success", that could help with those things. I know that when I start to feel like I want more and more stuff that I don't need because I am not happy with what I have/don't have for whatever reason, I have to really remind myself how blessed I really am to have what I do. So what if my price range is Kohl's when I really want Gucci...I need to tell myself that at least I can buy new things and don't have to only shop thrift stores (nothing against that at all anyone; I just rarely find anything at thrift stores, probably because of very poor selection where I live).

I think something like that could really help with the empty feeling...because you'll be giving of yourself to others.

I'm so happy that I am participating in this forum now and will have company and support for SYC!

The reason I am SYC is that I have blown my quite generous 2011 clothing allowance almost completely and it isn't even the end of July! I LOVE to shop and usually do it at least once a week, not to mention a few days a week online. I have TONS of clothes and need to utilize what I have before buying more. Even if I hadn't blown my budget, I think it would be a good idea to take some time to really use and evaluate what I have so I could buy based upon needs, not just impulses.

One thing I've been doing this year that has been helpful is logging how often I wear everything I have. I do this in three ways:

1) I turned all of my hangers the opposite way (facing out instead of in) on January 1. As I wear something, I turn the hanger inward. That way, I can see what I'm not wearing and try to incorporate it into an outfit.

2) My husband came up with a great idea to hang tags (the ones with string and a cardboard tag) on each hanger. As I wear something, I put an X on the tag. That helps me to see what types of items I wear so I can buy more of those types of items and less of the types of things I rarely wear. This has been amazingly eye-opening and helpful for me!

3) For items that don't have hangers (shoes, jeans), I have a chart on a clipboard and make the Xs there. I update this chart on the computer periodically.

Increasing my awareness is helping me to buy smarter, but it isn't helping with my overall problem of buying too much. I know that I sometimes shop for the wrong reasons. I shop to get a "high" or to fill a sense of inner emptiness. I feel a boost from shopping and love the shopping environment (surrounded by newness and possibility), even if I don't buy anything. I love the "hunt" of shopping and seeing what I can find. I shop at all price points, from thrift to designer. I usually only buy the higher-end stuff if it's on sale (I bought quite a bit at NAS, for example), but I am good at finding deals.

I often wonder if I should turn my shopping passion into a career because my career is not exactly thriving at present, but I worry that I will potentially get worse (shop more) if I am more immersed in that environment. For now, I keep a soft focus on looking for a possibility to make lemons from lemonade in that respect, but my main focus is on learning not to buy so much.

I have a wonderful wardrobe, but I can't stop myself from wanting more. For example, Mo's red focus and subsequent outfits have me really wanting more red items. I would love a red pair of pants or a red skirt. I have to stop wanting so much. I tell myself, though, that if I still want this red item next month and I can find an item at a low price, I can get it. I am trying to widen the gap between wanting and buying because I often just forget things down the line.

I could write and write on this topic and am actually thinking of starting a blog about it. Maybe my struggle and resulting insights could benefit others. For now, I will just write here on this forum and take comfort in knowing I am not alone!

Mo- Target is my downfall. I go in for catfood and TP, and I end up with a necklace, dress, and PJ's.
Kelly- shopping is a habit for me. I don't always spend when I go, but I go at least twice a month just for shopping. Other times I end up with things from Target, or I run in to stores next to errands, etc. If I am not out shopping, I am always hunting online for the perfect item. My husband says it's always 'just this one thing' that I need- and he's right. We will be moving soon, so I am committing to no purchases other than groceries until the move happens.

Kelly, for me it has been a shop every week or two habit while off work here in FL. When I am back in CA and busy with my full life and jobs it's less frequent. I might browse eBay for a particular item - winter coat for example - for several weeks or months until I hit upon a perfect item and bid. But the in-person browsing happens about once or twice a month and usually does not end up in any purchases. I find I shop in FL because I have the time, and more opportunities to wear regular clothing since I'm not wearing a work uniform here :)

Khris - you can make it thru! Good job on getting in and out of Target - that's a hard one.

I also signed off of most of my retail mailing lists. I'm joining when I resolve my NAS purchases, that's my fall and winter shopping. I also need to replace a pair of workhorse shoes that just broke. I think replacements shouldn't count against SYC.

For those who are SYC, I am curious as to what your normal buying habits are as opposed to now doing this. Do you usually buy things very frequently (how often?) and now have to stop?

I don't buy things on a very regular basis; it's usually somewhere at the beginning of a season and specific items I am looking for. Then I may not buy anything for months after that. For example, at the end of May/beginning of June, I bought some summer items I had been looking for (and a couple that I wasn't looking for, of course) but I haven't bought anything since and I don't plan to buy anything new until fall hits. So for me who doesn't buy every week or every month, I guess I feel like I am always SYC, but to me that is what the clothes in my closet are for. I also like having a smallish wardrobe and have really pared it down over the last couple of years.

Of course, I do look online all the time to get ideas of what I want to have in my wardrobe and constantly fill up online shopping carts!

Yay! It looks like we have quite a few new people who need to Shop their (Your) Closets/Budgets. Welcome to everyone who has just begun. I love the threads that have already been posted with detailed plans, cyber wine fests and support. Sunday is a hard day for me personally, because it's the only day that I get the newspaper- and the weekly store ads are out. I am trying not to look at most of them, but I do like to see what Target has on sale. I managed to get in and out of Target with nothing but groceries- not once, but twice this week. I have been browsing online, mostly at etsy/ebay. I think it helps that I can save things on those sites and know they will still be in my lists if they don't sell. I'm finally not getting retail emails- why does it take so long to get off their lists and only a second to join?
How is everyone else doing?
