I search online for inspiration outfits to remix my wardrobe items into new combinations. That always helps me feel like I freshened up my wardrobe without adding anything new. Also I give myself a break with a seasonal item. I'm not a sandal gal and I do not like to shop for them. So this summer, I didn't. I found I sported other footwear (oxfords, boatshoes, loafers) and felt just fine wearing them in the summer months. Perhaps you just aren't in a boot mood this year? Is there another footwear style that would work for you that would be fun to shop for instead?

ETA: I totally hear you on the boots thing. It's really hard to shop for hard-to-fit items at the best of times. But maybe getting over that hump will help a bit. Once you have the boots, you'll be able to style new outfits to work with them.

Your creative energies may simply be elsewhere right now, and that is fine -- our interest in our hobbies and even our deep passions ebbs and wanes. If you're busy with other creative things that give you satisfaction, I wouldn't worry. If, on the other hand, you're feeling dissatisfied and needing an injection of fun -- well -- how about a YLF meet up? :-) Or a "clothes swap." Or a decision to buy 3 new accessories (nothing expensive) that will supercharge what's in the closet. Something like that.

I totally sympathize, Kari. I was going to post something very similar. I am going to have to SYC for a while as our heater broke and needs to be replaced, which is going to be thousands of dollars. I love all my clothes, but suddenly now that I can't shop, I have not been as inspired lately to spend a huge amount of time on outfit creation. The last few weeks I've been in a "wear whatever I can grab" phase. I feel like you've seen it all already! Especially since I have so many dresses--there's only so many ways you can wear those.

That said, I am a big big fan of your style. Would it help for you to go back and do more retrospective posts? Like a lookbook for each season or something? I just did one for orange and blue, inspired by Angie's post today. I may go back and finish out my maternity lookbooks (I did 1st and 2nd trimester, but haven't gotten around to doing 3rd trimester and postpartum).

The copycat and challenge ideas sound great too. Or are you up for a twin day? Hope you can get your fashion mojo back (or else just relax and enjoy the break from worrying about what you wear)!

If everything else is okay, I'd just think it's phases, where one thing or another is at the forefront. I like the idea of setting a goal or challenge with re- mixing. It's healthy (no $$) and I feel I'm being more creative than when just getting something new. So it's like an exercise slump where you try a different route or routine. But less pressure, because if you just don't feel like, well, that's ok, too, assuming you do get dressed!

That's interesting, Kari. I totally missed your point--sorry. I think I focus on the end product and am not so keen on the process. You have a more artistic approach. I don't know how to make it fun for either of us

Do you ever cruise Pinterest? It seems like lots of people have fashion boards--perhaps pinning some looks to try will motivate you? What about posting some WIW's here? I love your WIWs.

I think the big difference for me now, compared to prior slumps, is that I like the clothes I have, and pair them in new combinations; I'm just not feeling inspired or excited when I do it. It's just something I do every day, like applying products to my hair or putting on makeup, but not something I'm feeling especially excited about or wanting to experiment much with. Does that make sense? I've lost my sense of play and fun.

I play games too - like how many ways can I wear this? Or I try to style something I don't wear much in different ways. Sometimes though I think other things take over as long as you are still feeling good in what you wear I'd just be inclined to say "This too shall pass".

I can totally relate to the disinterest. It takes a lot of work to shop and I really hate all of the returns. I like Malina and Sharon's ideas for challenges and copy cats. I'm thinking about working on some new pairings instead of relying on the same old combinations--maybe just a few days out of the week.

I regularly struggle with this. Finding my size in a pain, finding my size that fits me worse yet. I have all but given up on trousers at the moment. I have a few pairs that fit well, but it is just easier to wear skirts. They just get me better.

Boots are the worst. Booties are pretty straight forward, but come the colder months, I really need good quality tall boots for warmth and comfort in said skirts . . . *sigh* Keep me posted if you find some good wide calf boots!

I struggle with this too...
One thing I have found helpful is to try and replicate outfits (usually from YLF) using pieces from my own wardrobe. Sometimes an unexpected colour combination or trying two pieces I wouldn't have put together can be enough to make me feel enthusiastic again.

I dunno - I suffer the same sometimes. Right now I'm on a small jag of trying to fill some long standing wardrobe holes because I have nothing but time. But I'm not super excited necessarily at the whole process of it online and with return hassles. Actually, I only have one hole successfully plugged at the moment, with 2 more hopefuls on the way. Returns have far outweighed the successes.
As for how to get more excited about the wardrobe you have - maybe some mini challenges? Try remixing one item 3 ways. Or putting together a capsule for a week or two. Or carrying over one item each day to make a different outfit. Silly head games to keep us looking differently at the same old stuff.

PS I was just about to ask if anyone was contemplating a shopping ban when I read your post. I am slowly, gingerly, moving toward a no more shopping point for the rest of the year.

I've been on a shopping fast for the last couple of months, and it's been surprisingly easy to step away. I've kind of lost interest in my own style lately. Though I've allowed myself flexibility for quality over quantity buys that fill a major gap, I'm not jazzed about expending effort to find them.

For example: I have no tall boots and need at least one pair, which is a problem considering it's mid-October already and I don't have booties I can wear either, but as for the thought of trying and failing to find wide calf boots via online orders that I like and that are comfortable... Ugh, that doesn't seem at all fun. I'm not at all motivated. I still wear clothes that I like, but I'm not feeling very inspired or creative.

How do you cope with a lack of interest in fashion without relying on a steady infusion of new pieces into your wardrobe?
