Thanks, Elizabeth - I am hoping to add more carefully this year. Time will tell I guess.

Smittie, thanks! I will be adding warm INDOOR layers this year, too. A long sleeve tee and thin cardigan simply don't cut it anymore!

Trying to hit 30 wears for your pieces is a great goal, Bonnie! I am glad you joined the challenge, and it looks like you had great outfits in January. Beautiful heron!

I enjoyed your SYC review. I joined your challenge and did well until the 19th. YLF posts reminded me that January is a good time to update lingerie (Angie) and a forum post reminded me that January is a great time to take advantage of sales. So, I ordered Jockey briefs, and Everlane sweatshirts which were all on sale. However, I did not wear any of the new items and everything I wore was from my existing wardrobe. I focused on getting 30 wears and tried to wear items that are nearing that milestone so I can replace them. I wore 38 outfits in January which are in the photo below. I added a photo of a blue heron I saw on my walk today.

Very well thought out!
Yes, I know what you mean about focusing on warmth. Strangely, it’s easy to forget about warmth when you can just throw on a parka over everything. But then you’re cold INDOORS!

This year I made a point of buying very warm things (thicker sweaters and some thin puffers than I actually wear indoors) and it’s paid off. Being warm is sure nice!

Sal - I would pick #2 for you too. You look so pretty in the summer dresses, I can see why they are hard to avoid shopping for!

notsaf - I am certainly not in a rush, and I think a thinsulate option could be really smart! I wonder if there is an option that falls between a wrap coat and a peacoat... something not quite as buttoned up as the Hobbs, but less bathrobe-y than the wrap one...

Joy - I share your ban on polyester, for the same reasons. Too hot for summer, not warm enough in winter. I have a stack in my closet that I've had for ages that I should probably edit.

Sarah - thank you! Cold spring would be a great time for more color. And, if I add just a sweater or two, that will give me more than enough variety.

Fabulous analysis. I love your insights and your wishlist. It totally makes sense that so much of your wardrobe is transitional, given your previous home in San Francisco.

The color palette of your finds looks so yummy! And just perfect for your coloring. I wonder if turquoise/lavender/tomato red pieces would suit especially well for "cold spring" -- when you are itching to break out the transitional items but it's still too chilly.

I also just love love those colors you are considering with your standbys of rust and olive!

Great job organizing. My goal is to find one piece to rule them all if possible. Sometimes it means two, one for cold weather, one for the warm season. I am really happy if one striped tee can replace 2 or 3.
My no buy list includes mini skirts, distressed jeans, leggings, sandals and open footwear, things with waists, deep V necks, dropped sleeve seams, and most polyester. I find polyester too hot to wear most of the year but not warm enough when it is really cold and have had bad luck with it ripping at the seams.

If you can hold out, it might be nice to try to find a longer coat lined with Thinsulate. It's super over bulky sweaters and very warm. The one I have below in finds has it. Turns out it's too warm for the UK, but it will be great back in the Northeast.

ChristieIJ - it's so hard to let go of favorite pieces JUST because of weather!

suntiger - interesting question... I have always treated denim as a neutral, in my assumption that it just goes with everything. My trouble with color is that I don't really have much color in tops (or bottoms, except for a few pairs of cords) other than green. And a yellow coat. The majority of any color I have is in accessories.

Carla - Outerwear has been mostly an afterthought. I just re-grouped my outerwear to get a better idea of what I have. I have two knee-length wool (blend) coats - BUT - they are extremely thin, and I have to wear my uniqlo puffer vest under them to get even a minute amount of warmth. Then, my vest-plus-coat feels too tight if I am wearing a thick sweater (my preferred top in cold winter). It snowed on Halloween last October, and will be cold until at least early May. My warmest coats are a heavy parka, a sporty short puffer, and two thigh length faux fur. I feel like I am missing something longer, or at least more wind-proof.

Angie - Thanks! I will address my unworn items in a separate thread. Maybe my outerwear quest, too!

notsaf - It all looked really good with like items together, but I think this will function so much better!

I did make a no buy list last night actually!

Heeled sandals (I love them but don't need more)

Summer party dresses (an easy buy for me but I am pretty well set up and want to put my budget elsewhere)

Winter black tops to wear with jeans (black and denim is dreary on me- will keep black in work capsule and in summer but moving away from winter casual)

Summer weight scarves (never wear them)

Summer jackets (last two summers have been too hot to wear them often enough)

Chunky jumpers/sweaters (love them but they are unflattering on me)

Skinny Jeans (I have always preferred a slim or straight style on me - no more skinnies for a bit)

I will let you know which ones of these I fail on - if I was a gambler I would pick #2 - and I am open to this come later on in the year but not right now:)

Big yes to dressing for your climate! One question though: since your WIWs had color + black/grey and you said you don't mix non neutrals often, do you consider denim neutral or non neutral? To me as a fellow Autumn, blue is always a non neutral- and I always pair it with black or brown.

Thanks, everyone!

notsaf - I see what you mean about the coat. I am torn on whether I want a wrap-style coat or something more refined. I don't wear my double breasted trench either - it feels too structured, BUT I DO reach for my double breasted peacoat. Hmm... must think more about this. I do love the color, though...

As for my re-org, I am sure it wasn't revolutionary, but since I keep everything in my closet all year, (rather than doing seasonal switchovers), I re-grouped everything by season of wear instead of by item type. So, winter knits, corduroy pants, flare or bootcut jeans that I only wear with boots are in their own section. Jeans and pants are grouped them by the kind of shoe I wear with them. All transitional weight or layering pieces (thin/tissue long sleeve tees, cardigans, satin joggers, etc) were put in their own section. It looks a bit more unorganized, but it makes sense to my otherwise scattered brain. :D

Now I can check weather first, and go to the appropriate shelf where my choices are already narrowed for me (instead of thumbing through a stack of jeans to find the right ones that will work with X top and Y shoe).

Cardiff - There's hope for you! I just know it!

TG - thanks! A solid plan with room for fun sounds marvelous! Hopefully I can execute!

slimcat - I've had my eye out for an aviator for a while now. The perfect one is a HEWI/unicorn for me!

Suz - YES! I have two winter-worthy shoes (plus one heavy gear boot), and five winter-worthy sweaters. Taking a hard look at HOW I wear a piece has been a lightbulb moment. Example - I own a thick wool peacoat, BUT because it's a tighter fit coat, the only tops I can wear under them have to be thin, and I don't wear thin tops when it's freezing, and I'm not wearing the peacoat as an indoor topper. Same thing goes for boots that aren't insulated and can't accommodate a thick sock. Seems like shopping for weather should have been a no-brainer, but I guess shopping habits are hard to break.

Sal - thanks! What is on your no buy list?

shevia - thank you! Waterproof shoes are a gamechanger!

thanks Rachy!

Jessikams - great to see you! Hope you are safe from the crazy flu out there! What coat did you get?

Very thorough and enlightened analysis. Your potential items are gorgeous. I like your goal to consider color variety. Also the do not buy list!

Season is so key; I have the opposite scenario where most of my year is hot but much of my wardrobe is still aimed at my previous cooler climate from four years ago! Just can't bear to get rid of those hard-won items. Yet it's hard to wear what I have. I'm resigned it's just going to take a long time to catch up to that change.

Excellent conclusions and plan. I love the colors and shapes of your picks too. My seasonal insight is that excellent water proof shoes are a necessity for me and make my life much, much better in our rainy season, which often includes flooded curbs as the drainage system doesn't keep up to the rain.

What a great plan! You have used this SYC to look at where to put your fashion energies.

Yes when you wear lots of jeans you can mix and match in lots of tops.....and a long slightly dramatic coat will look fantastic on you.

I need to update my Do Not Buy list too.

Whooohoo! You are singing my song. Climate based dressing is so important (especially if you are out and about walking around) and it's fantastic that you've now seen where your true holes are. It can be awfully hard to get our heads around the reality of where we live and our needs. It took me ages to understand that my cute booties were not going to cut it in my Ontario winters and I needed some serious boots plus waterproof footwear. Well, okay, maybe that's a slight exaggeration -- I did, on some level, understand this -- but still, I kept buying booties (which I never wore) and had only two pairs of real snow worthy boots. (ahem).

Anyway, in full enabling mode for you to beef up your high winter and high summer capsules. Those are probably your major seasons right there, and you deserve some variety.

PS that Hobbs one is beautiful in person, and slightly more structured than those who coats can be, which I like. But would it feel too dressed up? I found my Burberry Brit trench in a similar shape to be a little too buttoned up, if you know what I mean.

Per my personal parameters, I added a swim short and a rash guard for a trip we have coming up next month. I feel bad ending my own challenge early, but work is sidetracking me. And, while I won't be shopping for the next few days, I did want to put down my thoughts while they are still fresh.

I spent time on Sunday looking back on my WIWs, and notes. I
re-organized my closet (again), this time accounting for season of USE -
not when an item COULD be worn, but when I ACTUALLY wear it. I am a little surprised that it's been two years since I moved from SF, but my wardrobe is still not quite balanced for the climate here:

- Less than 1/3 of my wardrobe are pieces I would wear when it's truly cold. Given that winter is about half the year here, I will focus my shopping efforts on winter-specific pieces with a focus on warmth. I
have started a wishlist of potential additions with finds below.

- less than 5% of my wardrobe is high/hot summer pieces, excluding jeans and graphic tees. I will make a point to build one capsule of summer separates that do not include jeans. I already have chinos, a linen skirt, and sandals, so maybe adding a pair of pants and couple of breezy tops would be plenty.

- I will carefully edit or store my transitional items and make a point to NOT add any more.

- My preferred winter bottoms are jeans, so I can expand my color palette on top. I want to add a couple of sweaters in brighter colors - maybe tomato red, lilac, or turquoise.

My wardrobe goals for 2020 are:

- Stick to my wishlist FIRST unless I am doing a 1:1 replacement for essentials that are worn out, or don't fit.

- Look for upgraded versions of my favorite essentials (green and camel pullovers); maybe one more pair of warm winter footwear

- Consider color variety in tops that will be worn with jeans

- Continue to push myself to wear the unworn

- Work on achieving
balance of too sloppy/too dressy by playing with silhouettes and juxtapositions of fitted+flowy,
tailored+relaxed, and making more effort to use my accessories.

Wishlist:

- (1-2) updated green and camel pullovers

- (1) updated winter slippers (1)

- (1-2) winter sweaters in fun colors (maybe tomato red, lilac, or turquoise?)

- (1-2) flowy summer-weight tops in natural fabric

- (1) pair of summer pants that aren't denim

- (1) heavy, non-puffer coat (long wool? aviator?)

Forbidden List:

- no grey

- no graphic tees

- no skirts

- no transitional weather pieces

Potential additions:
