Yes SYC has definitely changed me.I sat with tons of marked down shoes in my amazon cart for three days, wasting endless time going back and forth about them, only to close it out without buying a thing in the end. Have I totally gone insane? Today I went to TJ Maxx INTENDINg to break the ban and buy some shoes to celebrate making it two months, and I didn't! I did buy a new work-out bra and some hose, but those count as gear and underwear. I did also buy a black belt, which I sorely need since my current belt keeps slipping over my pants and looks incredibly sloppy.
Not that the feel of the new cozy sweaters didn't call to me, and the handbags scream to me from across the store...I actually did not even go to the bags at all since I planned to buy some hose, a workout bra and a pair of booties.I stayed in the areas where I planned to shop, which NEVER happened before SYC ban. So I am still in, and learning to become a more discerning shopper as everyone is saying. My closet still feels full and that makes me want to be more careful about adding unnecessary stuff to it. Working on my own Sunday best problems! My favorites are getting alot more wear these days

Thanks girls - glad I'm forgiven!!

Laura that is a good question! I certainly don't feel the *high* I used to feel when shopping - but this particular shirt I bought was to wear over my swimmers when I walk to the beach (I live one block from the beach and over the summer hols will no doubt be down there every single day!), so its almost more like "gear" than something I can wear fashionably IYKWIM.

I must admit, the thrill of shopping has really disappeared because over the past couple of months I have realised just how discerning I have become when I'm shopping, so haven't had much success anyway, and now that I'm really out of the habit, it just doesn't hold the same allure to me anymore.

In fact, its at the point where I'm hankering to do more sewing, but I need to get to the fabric store and I'm avoiding that because I never leave there with just the things on my list LOL (And my laptop still needs replacing!) Although perhaps this is the ultimate test - has SYC changed my shopping habits enough that I can walk in, buy the fabric I need, and leave... I just doubt it because once I'm exposed to all the creative options, textures, colours etc my brain really does disengage!

I may venture out tomorrow so will keep you posted on the fabric store experience!

This is a gem of a thread! Definitely makes me think about my purchases a little more carefully. I'm not SYC but I have been trying to get some use out of the orphans and "Sunday bests." Funny thing, I encourage my girls to wear whatever they want so they can enjoy it before they out grow it. I should listen to myself sometimes. My BFF and I were laughing at an outfit she pulled out (never worn) and now terribly dated. Saved for the donation pile!

*I* forgive you, Theresa but then I have had to *customize* SYC myself. I am not a SYC purist, but it has served me really well -- and that's what it's about *for me*. . .

OK, I had a *teensy weensy* setback this morning :(

I had to go to a new town for an appointment and I had heard they had a fabulous op/thrift store... I arrived a little early for my appt, so decided to have a look through this famous store.

Well, with the loose change in my wallet I bought a $3.50 shirt. So I guess, officially, I broke SYC, but I also think that a one off in this situation isn't such a big deal, especially when spending the $3.50 on the top means I didn't go to the bakery next door and buy something incredibly sinful to eat LOL

Am I forgiven?

These threads move so quickly! I'd been looking for this week's and just found it.
It was fun reading all the posts and nodding in agreement.
I'm still in, mostly because I avoided any shopping this week unless it was groceries. The weather has just begun to cool, so most everything that isn't sleeveless or shorts is like something new. That will help. I've discovered that I need tunics and if I were not doing SYC, I'd be out there looking.
I'm also getting tired of my shoes and can't wait until it cools off enough to wear boots again.
Edit: I'm also a victim of Sunday Best , having been brought up that way. It's sad to not get use out of things you love before they become outdated, don't fit, or get moth holes. I'm trying to change my ways. Angie's party dresses and skirts with denim are an inspiration.

Ladies, all of your discipline is impressive, and though I have not joined the cause, you have given me food for thought, and I am looking for ways to wear neglected items. Laura, interview clothes are not especially fun, and perhaps that can help make things a little better. Kim, when I am not happy with my hair, I find it difficult to feel good about the way I look overall, and it's upsetting. I empathize and think we've all been there at one time or another.

Laura - Good for you! You stuck with getting just what you needed. (Thanks to Kristen - that' s what friends are for :-)

Dawn - the dress looks totally beautiful. Looking forward to seeing it on you!

QM - I feel your pain! I had one cut, years ago, that was so short in back that I was actually in a bad mood everytime I felt or saw or combed my hair -- for about two weeks!

Isabel - not to worry, backpacks for hiking are *gear*, even if it's high end gear!

Jonesy - I'm another "saving the Sunday best"er here. This year, I'm really trying to make good use of those favored items. It doesn't make sense to have some great pieces that hardly have any wear before they feel dated and I'm movingon to other favorites.

PF, you are soooo right ! No stone throwers here at all. Ironically, a lot of good came out of it, one being that while I was home, alone and very weak during the day and the other nights that I couldn't sleep , I started web surfing and ended up here. YAY !!!!

Queennie - great idea , maybe I could submit to flexible spending account !

In the end I am one lucky and privileged lady who NEEDS nothing and has more than enough.

Jonesy,I have the SAME problem--I call it the "Sunday best syndrome" :-)
Between SYC and cleaning my closet out of all things ill-fitting, I am now actually FORCED to wear some of my favorite things more often. Feels weird at first, like I am overdressed or something(even if I am not) but then it just feels great knowing I look put-together and loving what I am wearing. Glad you are enjoying your whole closet!!!

Laura, your purchase makes complete sense! Good luck at the interview. Kristen, you are a strong sponsor (in moments of shopping weakness, my SO will say "don't you have a sponsor you can call?").

I can't see the SYC-breaking dress, Dawn, but I'm sure it's gorgeous!

Chewy, I can see why you wouldn't want to be cold and naked in the fall and winter :).

Queen Mum, your haircut looks fab the way you've styled it. It looks modern and fuss-free, and frames your face so nicely.

Isabel, you burst an artery last year??! I think you should be able to buy whatever the heck you need to, at this point :)!

PalmFronds, a trip to NY in the fall would absolutely do me in. No question! That will be a true test of your resolve.

Theresa, it's so great that you were able to get the new camera--almost makes all of this self-control worth it!

Taylor, are you going to post some WIW outfits to show off your SYC-breaking spree? We can all live vicariously through you.

I have realized something about my shopping habits. I have this weird tendency to buy things I love, then never wear them. I take the tags off, figure out what would go with the garment, but then I always feel like I need to "save" it for some sort of special occasion or something. It's sort of like my SO is with wine. So I end up with this clothes museum! This SYC challenge has made me realize this, and now I am actually wearing all of my clothes, even if it's just to a boring old work meeting.

Thanks for the rational support there Isabel :-)

I did a good SYC deed and somehow sewed the frayed ends of the blouse back together.A slightly bit crooked in the back now but since I tuck it often I think I am okay.

Still not out of the temptation woods though.Currently my Amazon cart is full of shoes since they sent me an email about extra 25% off pumps...aaarrgghh!!!

Wow - you girls have been busy!

Dawn that is a lovely dress & I can't wait to see it on you!

Kim commiserations on the hair cut But at least its hair and it will grow.

I have a rather crazy day here, but I am so excited I just had to pop in and tell you girls...

Courtesy of not shopping for clothing & accessories for 27 days, I was able to take advantage of a super crazy sale and replace my digital camera!! Yippee!!! Previously, I would have spent any thing leftover of my fortnightly budget on clothes/accessories, but thanks to SYC, I haven't shopped and was able to snap up the camera.

Now just to replace my laptop... but I have a feeling that's going to take a whole lot more than just 27 days of not shopping LOL

(PS Every time I have been near a shop I have a little voice in my head saying "don't forget about SYC!"

Laura, oooo "gear", huh ? What if I get a motorcycle license, then I BUY a motorcycle ( I have only been on one once ) and I get the leather jacket as protective gear ? ("High Honey, I had to buy a Harley for SYC ! )

Nahhh, I am too clumsy, maybe a scooter, not a Vespa, but a Razr - I could borrow my 8- year- old son's.

Palm, my personal feeling is that if you replace a workhorse piece, it shouldn't have to be an exact replica but something you need and wear and it shouldn't count against SYC. Eventually, if we all shop our closets well, things will have to be replaced. And my vacation was very easy, I was out in the middle of the woods with no place to buy anything except dead worms for bait.

Dawn great dress! Can't wait to see it modeled by you on the forum :-)

Like you pointed out to me when I put back those shoes last week Laura, great job in resisting the full compulsion! It is tough when you put something on and it looks greta, only to then convince yourself to put it back. Great job with support Kristen!

QM, hang in there with the haircut. As someone who has had TONS of butchered haircuts in her life thus far, I can tell you in about a week it won't seem quite so bad. And you now know which hair stylist to possibly avoid in future...

I am hanging in thus far but really chomping at the bit to go shopping for some booties and oxfords.Plus my favorite blouse finally ripped from sheer wear and tear this past week, sending me into a frenzy to find a replacement online--no luck--so I am temped to find another blouse to be my work horse. I have a trip planned to visit my sister in NY mid-Oct and I may be jumping overboard during that trip I am trying to make it to that point atleast which will be 11 weeks for me!

Hang in there ladies. can't wait to read your first article Laura!

LOL Isabel, I'm sure even world leaders get bad haircuts - poor Kim! - does your hair grow fast? Isabel, a backpack is gear. You are safe.

Believe me, I was halfway down the path of convincing myself I needed a new suit. Thank goodness for Kristen - and she makes a good point, which is that the job I'm going for is NOT business formal on a daily basis. So a new suit really would be a waste.

I am still hanging in there, I think, I did buy a small backpack. I don't know if that counts. I have been day hiking again and my regular pack is very big. I am slowly getting back into my "regular" life after my artery burst last year. Anyway, I can't carry the big backpack yet and I had nothing that could substitute, so I got the small pack. I also can't hike without a pack because I need my inhaler, water, and emergency meds. Am I just making excuses ???

I started bookmarking things that I want to get when this is over ( maybe sooner than I am planning ! ). This has given me time to go through my list every week and delete things that I no longer want or add something that I like better. I am also saving up so that the stuff I do get is a little nicer than what I would normally get. What is getting difficult is that some of those things are now going on sale and others have already sold out, so I am getting a bit antsy.

Laura, I am so impressed that you did that. I am not sure I would have been able to. When I was having the leather coat breakdown, someone suggested I "just" try it on...and I knew I couldn't. If I ended up liking it then I would "just" buy it ! ( after I quit smoking, some of my friends would say that I could have just one cigarette, but I know that I can never, ever do it. I don't have the willpower. )

Dawn, great dress !!!!!!!

Queen Mum, I'm sorry that you hair cut has you feeling so down ! The pressure of being a world leader and icon must make it even worse ! I agree that you should go back and ask for a trim if you don't like the length - though it is tricky because you don't want to insult her. In the meantime, OUT, OUT, damned TEAPOT !!!!

Kim, I'll post photos later! I'm sorry to hear about your hair, but it will grow out soon. Perhaps you should go back to the salon and mention to the stylist that you are unhappy with how it turned out.

Laura, I'm looking forward to reading your article!
