Fantastic idea to shop your closet for festive occasions. I have been trying to do this recently, although with the weather here closer to 31C (88F) I've been getting a bit stuck between putting together an outfit that looks like an outfit and melting in the heat or wearing shorts and a top.
I think outfit #2 looks absolutely amazing on you! It is stylish and all the colours tone beautifully together. Also love #1, because I love the bright pop of red with just about anything. You look great.

I like the idea to add booties to #1. #2 is fab as is. I'm not a fan of pricey shoes for special occasions, I rarely wear them. I scour sale racks for a good "deal" and go with a strappy sandal that can work in all seasons (bare for warmer months and with hose in cooler months)

oooh Laura I have to say I was struck by your coat in #2 - its divine!!! Can't wait to read your article on Friday.

I'm pretty sure I only have the school concert tomorrow night and the gymnastics end of year demonstration Friday night, and both are low key events, so I don't really need to dress up much this Christmas season... I kind of wish I did have a fancy party to go to though!

After being at a Christmas party for kindy this morning, i was struck by how badly I wanted to go and buy a new summery day dress - all the other mothers had lovely bright colourful frocks on and I almost wanted to have a tantie and go shopping! Well, I did actually go looking but nothing that I liked fitted - so the shops saved themselves from me LOL

Earlier in the week I had the girls go through all their soft toys and we donated an enormous bag of old and baby-ish toys - its such a nice feeling to be offloading!

I have those Naturalizer booties and I love them. I've only been wearing them with pants and jeans during the 30 in 30, of course.

Yes, the boots would work - maybe booties would be fun and would update the look. Like the ones in Angie's store: http://youlookfab.com/store/20.....s-booties/

Joy, knowing where to go next is definitely half the battle. It would be nice if you could live in the same neighborhood.

My go-to shoes for the holidays are simple 2" heel red patent Me Too pumps, or the same style in black and in pewter. yes, I triplicated them. They are the Element style and not clunky looking despite the lower heel.
We need to downsize as we have a 5 bedroom house with two people living in it. Over 30+ years we've collected way too much stuff! The problem is finding where we want to live next. Our neighborhood is friendly and quiet and hard to leave.

Good luck with selling your house!
I have no suggestions for special occasion shoes. However, simply substituting the boots in the second picture for the shoes in the first picture might just be what you need.

Oh, Bella, good point about the shoes. I hate spending money on special occasion shoes that I can't wear for anything but, well, a special occasion. Sandals are out of the question - the high temp today is 21 degrees F so we are well into the deep freeze. Does anyone have suggestions for shoes I could put on my Jan. 1 wish list?

Joy, no article last week - it will be Friday, I think and I'll post a link then. I have sorted through pretty much everything we own, into "keep," "store," "give away," or "garbage." It was absolutely overwhelming but it felt SO good. There is something so satisfying about downsizing, even though it's a nontraditional thing to do in the stage of life we're in (having young kids). Our house went on the market today. Are you going to do the same, Joy?

I have several satin pieces that I could work into holiday looks. I did a holiday twist on casual recently for a wine tasting, with a silvery scarf and red satin tank. And I actually have a friend mailing me an old bridesmaid dress I wore years ago for possible holiday reworking. It's a deep plum satin with ties criss crossing up the open back. That's reallly shopping my closet - 9 years ago was when it was last worn!
Love your holiday looks you found in your closet!

I would swap the shoes in the first outfit for another pair, they make this outfit look dated, imho.

Laura, your outfits are beautiful and festive. I keep the holidays in mind when shopping january sales because it seems I never find anything if shopping at the last minute. I'm well prepared with a long red cowl neck Tahari tunic sweater scattered with a few matte sequins and a matching scarf to wear over skinnies for something casual and either my black lace or beaded skirt to pair with a dressy sweater or silk shell. I'd like a beautiful ivory dressy blouse but have never found the right one. There's an AT black sheath with 3/4 sleeves and cowl neck and a sleeveless black sheath that can be worn with a dressy little sheer silk jacket to fall back on too. Then there's a red suit I settled for last year that can be split up or worn together. It's a wool textured weave, so not especially dressy. The jacket can look festive with a ribbon for a belt.
For a coat I have a black trench that's a bit dressy. It can be dressed up further with one or more of my collection of sparkly snowflake brooches. I've got bits and pieces I should get out to style, such as a black sequined scarf, gold metallic shell and black velvet shell I've never worn, and red silk kimono. Does anyone wear a kimono out? How? I believe Kendall Farr in Style Revolution said that older women should own one. My was inherited.

I was going to take time to do this today, but decided that I need to focus on housewifey stuff.... (grocery store, Target, laundry and dinner) so will take time later this week to put together some outfits.

I had made several purchases trying to inject some new holiday cheer into my wardrobe, but it is all going back. The only thing I bought that I'm keeping is the hinge military jacket. So, while I fell off the wagon, I'm making amends for my wayward shopping ways :-)

I love the way you did your pearls in #1. I'll have to remember that. both of your outfits look fabulous. What a great example of not succumbing to the lure of the mall this Christmas! Thanks for sharing.

This week, I put together a couple of holiday outfits from my closet, using your suggestions from the thread last week on what makes an outfit instantly say "holiday." I have a couple of events - nothing incredibly dressy -- and Christmas Eve to think about.

The first outfit features a satin skirt, sparkly top and shoes I've owned for about 10 years (believe it or not), pearls and red handbag. The second is a more casual option using jewel tones - cobalt blue turtleneck, layered BR necklace from last year, cream S & K coat, tall black boots, teal peacock scarf.

I actually found shopping my closet for holiday outfits to be really easy. How about you? Can you find outfits for the holidays already in your closet?
