I think it depends on whether it's an item that's hard to find for you. I would definitely try a pair of fab flats now because I know how hard it is for me to find nice shoes that fit and are comfortable. So I would take every chance I could to find the perfect pair. I won't buy other spring and summer basics until I need them, if I know that I come across them more often.

Cute flats! I have some Born flats and I wear them a lot. You will get a lot of use out of them. Besides, anything orange is exempt from SYC, LOL! :)

I think it really depends on what your reason is for SYC/SYB. I tend to grab things when I see something that I think is just right for me, and if it's not, return. But I am an unabashed returner!

Claire, I can't wait to see more of your breezy style! You will be one of the spring/summer gurus for sure!

Hmm. I think a lot of it should depend on what your dominant season is, and when spring actually hits where you live. I remember when I joined in August everyone on the forum was going nuts with the Norstrom Annual Sale and I had to just sit it out. Now I'm glad I didn't rush to buy a poncho, cape, sweater dress, coat and boots! I have not needed any one of those items. It was really hard though to watch everyone having such fun.

Now the tables are turned and I'm beginning to bring home some spring/summer items. I have a huge need so I should probably even be out looking at sandals already since the best ones will sell out in my size quickly here.

Yes, I am going to step back for February ( except for the Feb. YLF get toghether ) so that I can step back and really evaluate what I have...I really want a small wardrobe. I also don't want to start buying for Spring because I have no idea what my weight or body shape will be come April. I also donn't know if any of my Spring/Summer clothes even fit. My meds may change in March. I bought a couple of dresses at a small boutique that are going to be very versatile. So I think that I am done

I want to make a point of wearing everything that I have bought this past month to make sure that all the holes are filled and I have a couple of fun things.

Let's see....what did you ask me ? LOL

I just ordered the Born flats - these ones in orange (http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/bo.....sultback=0) and when they arrive, will tuck them away for spring. I think I will, like Rita, focus on SYB and perhaps purchase one spring item per paycheque in order to start building that season's wardrobe. My closet overhaul involved only my fall/winter clothing and now I need to do the same with spring/summer.I don't want to have to purchase a whole slew of items at once so "chipping away at it" piece by piece will probably work better for me.

I vote buy the Borns right now. I still regret the orange Born flats I left at the Rack last year while I decided and when I went back (next day) of course they were gone. Of course keep them in box with receipt. Since it's Nordstrom you should be able to return if something else come along and tickle your fancy more.

I plan to continue SYC for cold weather items since we still have at least 2 more months of winter. But I am keeping an eye out for new spring items, I plan to stick to a list and only add something new now if I can layer it for our current weather and then wear it again come spring time. In the past when I've purchase a purely warm weather item months in advance I would tire of it before I even get to wear it. Apparently seeing it in the closet everyday vs wearing it are the same for me. I am trying to hold off on purchases that I cannot wear right away.

Meredith - don't you worry about the lingo - you'll catch on. SYC is shop your closet (meaning you're not buying anything new but working with what you have) and SYB is shop your budget (meaning you will only buy items as they fit into your budget).

What does SYC vs SYB mean? New to the lingo, still learning the language!!! I do know that I dont' tend to buy the new colors and trends while they are new. Unless it's a scarf. I wait till end of season. I guess that means I am not really a trendy person. I am looking at yellow and orange scarfs so maybe the things I would buy won't be hard to find later in the season.

This so depends on your own budget. I'm not even considering SYC for myself yet because I'm still building from the ground up. If you can afford the shoes and they will fill a hole for you, I say get them and save them for spring.

Now that I feel like I have a good set of solid basics, I am focusing on a list. I want a new bag and a new summer work dress. I am also open to casual shoes. That's it for me right now. I guess that puts me on SYB, not SYC.

Good question. I was going to SYC in January-February until I figure out whether I need/want anything for spring but I haven't really started because some really great end-of-season sales kept popping up. I did return much of what I bought so that kept my budget in check, but still.

I usually start itching for some new spring colors and clothes in March and find it hard to resist adding a few items. So I will probably try to stay away from spring shopping until I am really, really in love with something. I don't know yet if I have any big wardrobe holes for spring (I don't think so, with the exception of lightweight work trousers, perhaps). If I had any, I would probably snap up the items that fill the need if they showed up in the right size and color.

Good question! Depends on what your reasons are, I suppose. Mine is becoming ever more budgetarily driven, so I will be waiting. But if you are just trying to mindfully buy - maybe getting them and putting them away isn't a bad idea?

After my vintage bag find today and my recent purchases, I am once again on SYC holding out until spring. My winter wardrobe is more than complete to get me through until then.

My question to others though is...do you/I remain steadfast in the SYC mentality until spring or do you start to buy, piece by piece, things you want for spring now while they are still available in your size/colour preference?

For example, there's a gorgeous pair of Born flats at Nordstrom's that would fill both my desire for orange and flats for spring and are available in my size...do I get them now, tuck them away and bring them out when appropriate, or do I wait until SYC is done?

Or another question is do I/we wait until March/April when there will be even more and newer spring merchandise available?

This will be my first "new" season with YLF and am a little unsure on how to approach it.
