Thanks Star. What are some of your faves that you’ve brought back out again? I may have misspoken about the green dress. I wore it frequently its first couple years, then put it away, got it out for my son’s first grade ceremony, and then didn’t wear it until last summer. It seemed too fussy to me, but now I like the extra volume on top.

LaPed, are your heavyweight leggings fleece-lined? I still think that’s such a brilliant idea, had never heard of such a thing until my thread about winter workout clothes. How amazing to have some lurking in your closet!

I also tend to hang onto my items even if not fitting at the moment, etc. That said my oldest pieces mostly come from early 2000's - not as old as yours. It really is fab when something you have hung onto comes into it's own again. I love the jumpsuit, the Honolulu dress and the white/green patterned dress - how fab that after wearing it only once it now is a favorite. Yay for Team Keep and Wear!

April, “ an elaborate dressing room with plenty of space” to see everything at once would be amazing! You’ve got a long enough past history that I bet you can identify themes that will continue to appeal to you in the future.

Brooklyn, your upcycling is next-level. I want to start doing that with things I pull back out that aren’t quite right for another go-round.

La Ped, those look so much like you, I have a hard time understanding that you stashed them away. Most of my things in hiding aren’t unloved—they’re faves that just aren’t right for the moment. Wearing my jumpsuit a few years ago would’ve made me look like a nutsky.

Sally, is that one of the ones you posted about? Cool that you’re wearing it.

Bijou, those rompers are great! And I’m glad you found the right tweak to make the dress wearable again.

Synne, your sweaters are amazing. Have you posted your mom’s yet?

Rachylou, do you wear the pants & boots together? It’s so nice to have stuff in the closet when life turns a little bit this way or that.

Zaoebi, I feel you on the stuff scattered across the globe. When you open up a cache, it’s like a special present from someone who knows you well and really thought about you!

Angie, so glad to see the burgundy back in action, and love how you breath new life into it by wearing it a slightly different way.

RobinF, that something not quite right is what I want to start figuring out on some things. See Brooklyn’s creative projects.

As opposed to holding onto things for decades, I tend to purge too quickly.

Now that I have an elaborate dressing room with plenty of space, you're inspiring me to keep things longer, SF!

I don’t do this a lot. I have older items but I tend to keep wearing them occasionally over time rather than resting them for long periods. But sometimes I do get sick of an item, rest it for a while, then revive it.

In 2021, my best “revival” was a Nicole Miller silk maxi dress which I bought in 2009. I hadn’t worn it for years. I made it into a skirt then overdyed it. I’ve worn it multiple times since.

Not much, honestly. Like RobinF, pulling out unloved pieces is usually more of a reckoning where I come to terms with the fact that something about them just isn't working and bid them adieu.

These heavyweight leggings from ~6 years ago got lots of use this past fall/early winter after languishing for a couple of years because they're quite temperature-specific: perfect for hiking in spring/fall or mild winter temps, or running right around freezing or a bit below, but not much else. The fabric isn't quite as resilient as it used to be and some of the seams are starting to get questionable, so I should probably start looking for a back-up.

I've also been revisiting these slouchy olive chinos for the first time in what feels like a long while (again, I think they're coming up on 6 years). Low rises are starting to feel fresh to me again, and this is one of the few pairs of lower-rise pants I've found that works for me. This is actually my back-up pair; the first pair got so much use they wore through at the knees, then got bleach stains, then got overdyed black to be part of a costume... I think this second pair has at least another season in them before the knees give out. I don't think they're quite the right shape to become shorts, but I might try them as cut-offs anyway, when the time comes.

That suede jacket is such a yummy colour! Love the floral jumpsuit too; really a perfect fit.

Mine would be my khaki shirt dress that I found in a bag of clothes and hadn't seen since 2018 when I thought I wouldn't fit it again. I have worn it once a week to work since finding it. So easy to wear and wash and wear again.

I have rediscovered this summer dress. It has a low wrap top and I used to wear it with a black camisole, but then with the layers, it felt a bit warm, I am now wearing it with a black sports bra that gives the look of a camisole without an additional layer. I kept the dress because it is a beautiful brocade and am enjoying rediscovering it.

I have been wearing my short playsuits this summer, having not worn them much in my 2020/21 summer. An easy alternative to shorts.

I don't have that many old pieces, and I am working on downsizing my wardrobe, and my entire house inventory really. I am using a heirloom knitted sweater from my mom a lot this winter though!

Oh, probably the most spectacular was giving my old wide leg, black and navy circus stripe jeans a spin. And my red ankle boots. Expanded office days made that possible. And my old tweed suit :)

I love that jumpsuit!

That's great that you can still remember all the clothing you've got scattered across the globe - I've packed up just *one* suitcase for my UK capsule wardrobe yet *still* have to consult my list & photos to remind myself of what's in there. Let alone what I likely still have lurking over there, lol!

So in that vein, I don't *think* I have much clothing like that because I tend to wear my clothes in the same 'intended' way each time. But I could be wrong...?

As for #5, kaftans make the best house dresses, don't they? I sometimes wear my orange & black one at home during high summer - it makes a great sofa nap dress

It's fun that you kept, and like wearing these items decades later! Very unique :)

My fave is the suede jacket because it works so well with your skirts. It's also a rich shade of brown that looks good with your complexion and the red back pack.

To answer your question: I'm enjoying my re-discovered burgundy capsule! Have since embellished it, and love wearing it with reds, oranges, and light blue.

Good thing you kept them! I love the jumpsuit and the caftan the most. Flowy and summery and really nice prints. Also love the plaid jacket - really fun.

I save my clothes a long time too but usually find when I bring them back out that there is something I don't like so I end up getting rid of it then.

What are the best things you brought back into rotation last year, after not wearing them for a long time?

I have a large wardrobe, as I tend to keep things for a long time. I don’t usually have it all in my closet at once—some might be stored elsewhere in my home, or at my parents’ or in a storage locker (rarely). So when I see a trend or want to emulate a look, my first thought is to shop my “closet”, where ever that may be.

These are things I brought (back) into rotation last year:

6 & find: a purple mini bought in the 90s. I could never figure out how to wear it then, but it is suddenly my new best friend.

4: a Coldwater Creek dress also from the 90s, worn for my son’s first grade induction and then never again—until last year, when I wore it a bunch. It’s just so easy to slip on!

2 & 8 Suede jacket from Esprit outlet in the 90s not worn much at all (it was too small when I lived in Florida) but now suddenly is just the thing for a skort bought ~8 years ago to encourage myself to lose weight, a pair of pants purchased 3 years ago that were too small at first, and many other things.

Find: JGHook parka worn frequently in the 90s-00s, and again this winter.

9 & 10 Levi’s 501s. Right now they are awaiting embroidery to repair hole in the seat, but when I got back into them, I loved wearing them. They just work with so many things.

6 & 9 Paisley button-front shirt with mattress ticking details felt too busy before. I often tried to wear it as a topper but the cut just isn’t right. Last year I started wearing it as intended, buttoned, and it is great.

5 Caftans, one purple, one black, given to me by a friend in Tanzania. Worn frequently until 2010, rediscovered last year, and once again worn at home frequently.

1 & 11 Jumpsuit just waiting for the 90s to return.

Find: JPetermann skirt that was too small to too dressy or too something, but is just right now. Was in my closet NWT last year.

3 Plaid flannel baseball jacket bought with matching pants in the late 80s. Haven’t worn the pants this time around.

7 Sundress bought while in Honolulu for a conference in 1996. Was too small during the years we lived in Florida, but I love the way it says “summer”.

This list makes it seem like the 90s were my decade, but I think what was really happening is that I spent 2 decades trying to fit into different ideas of what I “ought” to wear, and am now just being me again.

What about you? What have you enjoyed getting back out and wearing again? Do you wear it the same way you used to?
