The pants are very trendy, and I can totally see you in them. Agree on returning the jacket.

Have you ever considered maybe SYC is too strict? Can you set aside just a little something every pay period and use that and only that? It might not be as much as your prior wardrobe allowance, perhaps only 1/10 of it, but it would still allow you to indulge a bit. A short term fashion diet rather than starvation?

Thanks TraceyLiz, but cataloging and analyzing my closet leaves me cold. I'm very emotional and impulsive when it comes to fashion. Even Angie herself said I'm the most emotional shopper she knows.
Most of my outfits are "I feel like wearing item X today, so I'll build an outfit around that" or I get inspiration from bloggers or random flights of fancy.
ETA Mochi, I get what you're saying about browsing the web while I'm on SYC. I've done pretty good on online ordering. I haven't bought anything online since early October.

I recently found a website called Go Chic or Go Home where you can photograph your closet and make boards to help you play around and make ensembles. I wonder if this could be a helpful de-stressor and support your commitment to SYC.... Just a thought, but I completely understand the stress of a sick parent since that is how I gained 50lbs...

First of all, thank goodness it's nothing serious for your Dad. He's got enough going on right now!

I have been very guilty of "stress shopping" in my life so I am in no position to cast any judgement. As long as your budget can allow your purchase, then don't worry about it.

The pants are fantastic and your fashion cred it always intact!

I just wanted to emphasize that I am not judgmental and really am curious. And my question was not even around your purchase but more of a response to what I see here, not only with you, and I'm guilty of it myself in other non-fashion areas...but I am only commenting on the habit of spending a lot of time online looking at beautiful clothes when you are committed to not buying anything. (Which is obvious, because you post links to these things here quite a lot.) It looks to me like self-torture. Now, as I've said, I will cop to similar behavior...when I've gone off of carbs I will start pulling my cookbooks off the shelves, or go online and look at food blogs...it's maddening and I think it's self-torture and yet I understand that it's hard to shut that off.

So in my mind, it's not like the purchase happens in a vacuum. It's the whole buildup that creates room for the purchase. Seeing as I'm trying to repattern my behavior in different areas, I'm interested in this subject.

ETA: glad your father's okay, obviously the main thing here.

Given the scare you had, I think shopping as anti-stressor sounds completely understandable --- and I'm very glad you got a pair of uber-cool pants out of it too.

But at the same time, good for you for returning the jacket, as extremely fun as it sounds. I agree with Atlantia and Mochi --- it would be a good idea to strategize before you hit the potholes and see what other routes you can take for stress relief as well as daily fashion fix, if you're to truly commit to SYC.

Part of it was also I miss being super trendy. Kenzo is a super hot brand right now. It was a dead fashion house that Opening Ceremony bought and revived. It's all over the fashion blogosphere. These items were a very good deal.
The pants aren't going to put a huge dent in my budget and the alterations were free because I hadn't used my Nordstrom allotment for the year. I can probably wear them with my cropped black leather jacket.
The navy jacket had some cool details, like the ruffled hem zipped off and it had a big inverted pleat in the back. Do I still get retain my cool fashion cred if I return it?

I so get it. My "stupidest purchase of the year" was a pair of dressy low-heeled pumps I bought in Nordstrom Salon Shoes when I was worried sick about some relatives in the path of a hurricane. I don't work in an office. Dressy low-heeled pumps aren't even part of my fantasy lifestyle. I just saw them, thought they were beautiful, and bought them, all the while nervously texting various family members.

Next time I will go buy a hot cup of tea. Or a glass of wine! Or come on here for support.

Big hugs.

Yes, return the jacket. Recommit to SYC!
So, as far as lessons learned....what are you going to do next time you're stressed? We all have comforting things we turn to in times of stress. We're human, we need that. If you can't shop, what are you going to do?

Ok this was kind of a stress reaction purchase. I had to take my father to the doctor. Unexplained lower abdomen lump plus GI issues. Turns out it's mostly likely a small hernia. But he had forgotten to refill his blood pressure rx, and thought he could get by with cutting his pills in half.
The pants are in alterations because they're a smidge too long. So I really can't return those. How about I return the jacket and chalk it up to lesson learned?

I have not done an SYC (I have the opposite problem of needing things) but to me it seems like you are adding an ungodly amount of temptation and difficulty to the challenge by frequenting websites while officially on SYC. Just saying. The outfit is nice; I'm just curious as to how important SYC really is to you?

I can see why the pants grabbed your attention, I have liked the resent WIW post of yours but they have been on the tame side. Maybe you are in need of something way out there from the masses. You have some great leather jackets already so IMO you could hold on to the SYC and pass on both.
