You do not resemble the Hamburglar in any way! Although that picture cracked me up in the midst of your outfits. You made this week a real learning experience and looked very sharp doing so. Win Win!

Ha! The burger thief comment made me remember why I do not enjoy wearing red boots!

Enjoyed your analysis of the items and the lessons you learned. I need to try this. I have been contemplating how I really enjoyed the simplicity and ease of a couple of outfits I took on a recent trip. One was a turtleneck sweatshirt dress that I paired with faux leather leggings. The other outfit was a thick plaid tunic/dress that I wore with faux patchwork skinnies. I'm thinking that this should be my winter uniform and need to shop for three more outfits.

Thanks for taking the time to share with us and I look forward to your next post!

I REALLY like your theme as my everyday life is extremely casual at the moment:

”my theme was "wear it out". I initially intended to wear things that I normally allocate as "too dressy" for everyday wear”

I love the red striped sweater on you. Boredom buster - that’s great!

Keep the red striped sweater! Going with what Roxanna said, here's a good article about stripes https://www.callastudio.nl/can-i-wear-stripes/

I like the white color of #1 on you. I think there is a shade of white for everyone but finding it can be a chore. I also feel that I look awful in winter white. It is too warm a color. Same with ivory. A pale grey-white is so. much better.

Love Suz's idea for layering bits and bobs that are too much all alone, but nice in moderation. But then again, Suz and I like blazers and cardis, and indoor layering isn't so much your look, TG, is it?

You look fabulous in every one of these, but more than that, I'm impressed with your careful thought process. It's what Roxanna said-- sometimes going deep with this stuff is the path to a really happy style place. Notsaf's stripe analysis was excellent. I haven't put it into such clear terms for myself but I definitely have a preference for certain types of stripe and wear some more than others!

With the one that feels too bold -- I'll bet you would love it layered under a jacket or cardigan. Less of it would show then. Ditto with the winter whites. I think you actually look good in the white but I understand your preference for more contrast -- I feel it myself (even though I'm a lower contrast person). Still, I am grateful to have a couple of white items for winter to brighten outfits when I'm wearing a navy blazer.

Definitely wear the Dillon more often -- it's great!

I will say that I think stripe proPortions make all the difference. I found from looking at pics that Thin or medium stripes next to each other are too optic and high contrast for my style. I only wear thin white stripes widely spaced out on a black or grey background now (also feels more luxe to me.) It's funny how differently variations of stripes can flatter or detract from you. #nerdingouttoo

I think you should make a spot for your boredom-busters in your closet! Perhaps off to the side so that you can see the cohesiveness of your main wardrobe clearly. But I think you should honor the fact that they DO have a place in your wardrobe. Don't make them feel like they're on probation, give them a nice place to rest in between periods of serving you. (Yes, I just went full-on Marie Kondo woo-woo. But I think this may help *you* celebrate their role in your wardrobe too, rather than continuing to think of them as pieces that don't quite "fit" and really "should" be gotten rid of.)

I'm not sure ... I'm thinking I'll holding-zone them (a clear bin in my closet) so I have the joy of the cohesive-appearing closet with the flexibility of boredom busters ... although I wonder if this will be too out-of-sight-out-of-mind ... Hmmm .....

I do have a separate little stack of transitional weather pieces; perhaps I'll group them together and be done with it, to maximize flexibility? What do you think?

Thanks everyone!

Yes, notsaf, I think you are quite right. The more delicate stripe (like your Hobbs example) is a no-brainer for me, but different stripes need to be approached with care.

I think my bold stripe as shown is just that - a bit too bold for me. So it's fun when I'm feeling it but won't always work (and I probably shouldn't duplicate). I have a striped top very similar to your Vince one, and I love it but it's very casual.

Some of the stripes I had trouble with this summer would fall under the casual & fun / bold bucket (e.g. dresses below) - probably why when I wasn't feeling them, I REALLY wasn't feeling them. Again, I'll file them under boredom-busters but will be mindful of these dynamics for future purchasing! Haven't watched the video yet but I will this afternoon; thx!

[ETA watched it - Love Audrey a la mode! Great tips and great points about the relative size of the stripes.]

I love for #5-6! That is the real winner this week. Gorgeous tonal colors, too.

But, hey, let's talk about stripes! I agree with Sarah: that red is great on you. I've had something of a breakthrough recently about stripe proportions, which is simply to realize that some work better than others. I've found that I like ones that are slightly uneven in weight and not too thin or thick. (There an example at about minute 7:00 in this video that was an aha moment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVB1fEkjixU.) So maybe that navy just isn't the *best* stripe for you? Just a thought!

Showing finds to illustrate:
Funnel neck sweater: big uneven stripes = very fun and casual
Hobbs tee: delicate uneven stripe = flattering and refined
Boden tee: similar to the Hobbs = another favorite
J Crew striped boatneck tee: quite even but still somewhat small = good casual top
J Crew structured boatneck tee: quite even but stronger lines = not my favorite!
Vince tee: really thin lines = again, not the best look!

(Yes: I have a lot of striped tops!)

Anyway, love your looks!

Princess Stripe is looking FABULOUS. Goodbye low rises.

I like your boredom buster V-neck a lot. Flattering and showcases pretty necklaces and petty neck!

Wow! This is fantastic, I love your lessons learned. It’s true that it is nice to have a few pieces that you *don’t* wear all the time — then you can put them on and instantly feel dressed up/festive/special. I agree that the idea of “wearing the good stuff” shouldn’t prevent us from having those pieces.

I like the black and white top on you fine but I have to say I LOVE the red striped top. To my eye it’s simple without being severe.

That Dillon blouse does look fantastic on you. I find that good poly that is breathable and Drapes well is a dream because you can throw it in the wash!

Such great lessons - and just shows how nuanced we all have to be in Noting our preferences so that we don't buy something that doesn't 'fit' us. I have many pieces like your Zara sweater or ON sweater. They do work, I like them, but they feel too precious/off v necks/neck is just as touch too low/ etc. Good learning that I shouldn't feel bad about not wearing these all the time, but to note what's wrong and not buy any more!

Elizabeth, thank you! I hope we'll see your velvet jackets in a WIW!

So funny about the stripes ... yes, I believe they call it "spitting in the soup" ... it just kills the shirt for me some days But I still like it!

My Dillon blouse is actually polyester! But it doesn't look cheap (to me at least) and it seems to breathe somehow, perhaps because of the drapey fit. It doesn't feel polyester-ish, if that makes sense (and doesn't wrinkle at all, even out of the wash). I do have a silk blouse from BR and I am scared to wash it

Of course your outfits look great... they always do.

I love your narrative and lessons learned. I am slowly trying to put to put some 2020 goals together for myself, and I think the idea of getting over myself and wearing some things normally considered "dressy" or "precious" need to be one of mine. I bought a couple of velvet jackets in December, and I HAVE to wear them for normal life. I told myself I would when I got them... just need to follow through. Thanks for the inspiration/reminder.

And now I can't unsee said chef. And I have a sweater with much wider stripes... a closer match than yours. Thanks a lot.

Is your Dillon blouse silk or cotton? I have a silk one which I've only worn once so haven't laundered yet... just wondering if it falls into your "washes as easily as a t-shirt" category.

I think you can deal with the low v on the cardi with a tee or cami, to make it fuss-free.

Can't wait for next week! I'm intrigued.

Hi friends, for week 2, my theme was "wear it out". I initially intended to wear things that I normally allocate as "too dressy" for everyday wear; I ended up extending this to include items that hadn't seen wear at all for over a month (i.e. since the beginning of December). This was primarily for weather reasons; many of my 'dressy' (casual dressy) pieces are more suited to finer weather. But still a worthwhile week!

What I Learned:

For the most part, I DO wear the majority of my seasonally-appropriate clothing - by today (Friday) I was digging deep to find something not worn that made any kind of good sense

I do have just enough excess to enable me to change things up from my go-to pieces, when the mood strikes

I do have one piece I should wear more often - my BR Dillon blouse, which is as comfortable and washes as easily as a t-shirt

A few items I tried on and took off again:

Zara pointelle sweater. Although, this is as wash and wear and comfy as a sweatshirt, the look is just too fussy for me to enjoy in anything but a dressier "special occasion" setting

Merlot velvet jeans. Too low-waisted, and I'm just not a statement pants person. Note to self: update pants with more current essentials rather than statements.

Uniqlo winter white turtleneck and H&M winter white cableknit. Note to self: I look hideous in winter white. Stop buying it!!

Woven button ups. Not comfy. Need to iron. Note to self: Keep because they occasionally are necessary but do not buy more and no pressure to wear.

Outfits:

1 - Today - digging deep and came up with a white tee *snooze*. Lesson learned? I do wear most of my wardrobe, yay!

2, 8, 9 - Sorry I screwed up the order - a bold striped shirt that I love but sometimes don't wear due to it's uncanny resemblance to a certain cartoon burger thief :)

3, 4 - Red striped sweater. I'm still torn on this sweater. I think it's a good one for the 'boredom buster' capsule, but have no expectation of wearing it regularly.

5, 6 - The Dillon shirt. Comfy-womfy.

7 - ON burgundy cardi. Love the look of this, but I'm not into v-necks lately - and this one is low cut enough that it needs adjusting through the day. But again, a good boredom buster and I do like the look and feel classically-current in it.

Next week - make it do! How far can a girl get with just one top and one pair of pants? Stay tuned to find out!! :D
