Oh wow, I love the shape of this one:

http://www.spanx.com/product/i.....age=family

... and it comes in a 4, so I might have to eat my words!

Not thrilled about the color scheme though. I could see this looking amazing on someone with silver hair!

My pet peeve about Miraclesuit is that it's not really designed for petites. I wear a size 4 or 6 bathing suit. At that size, all you can find is skimpy little bikinis. Grrrr. But even though I need that size because I'm tiny at only 5'0", I am still mid-40s and trust me, nobody wants to see me flashing too much skin, and I absolutely would adore having the control of a Miraclesuit, but their smallest size is too big on me!

Spanx are the same .... they are all goofy on me, too long, so they suck things in in all the wrong places....

Hence my love for tankini's...

I think your criterion is spot on, Laura. Promise us that you won't be too hard on yourself though. Overly critical thought of ourselves in a cozzie is lethal stuff. We look better naked. And remember to look at cozzie's (waving to Fiona) WITH wraps!

Droopy is not how you want to feel in swimwear! So thank you for eliminating one option :)

I feel like my list of demands for swimwear is impossibly high: attractive but not TOO alluring, holds me in at the right places, lifts, separates, draws attention here, distracts from there ... LOL!

Kari and all, I will definitely report in on my findings. It may be a couple of weeks since I may end up ordering everything and trying it on in front of my own mirror. The thought of those horrible Macy's dressing rooms makes me cringe. Nordstrom, maybe ...

Perfect dress, Laura! I tried the Gottex ruffle cozzie on. It has no boob pad inserts!!! So I felt all droopy :0(

Laura, I hope you'll share what you find. The Spanx and Miraclesuit lines mentioned earlier seem to have a ton of cute options!

I gave up on finding a swimsuit last year - given that I usually just swim at my pool's gym for exercise, and only rarely have the opportunity to get to a beach, I figured it would not be worth it to spend $100 or up on a suit even if it is cute.

San, hilarious!! That's the attitude -- love it

So, inspired by San, I found this very cute knit dress in the cover-ups dept. at Nordstrom, but do I have to only wear it at the beach? It's the perfect summer casual dress!

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/30.....3&P=1

Marianna, thanks for the heads-up on Spanx. I also found this Gottex option, which might be the suit Antje purchased last year.

I have a similar approach to Shiny - I have a couple of tankini tops with a proper built in bra in patterns and then plain bottoms - one black and one bright pink! Since I am short in the waist the tankini top comes down without leaving a gap. I also feel since I am 30 there is an expectation that I should be wearing a two piece and I have never felt comfortable in the more traditional option!

Angie - I love your use of cozzie! You don't normally hear that except out of the mouths of Australians!

I actually have a MiracleSuit that I bought last year. I don't think I'll ever be 100% happy with a suit but this makes me about 95% happy. I bought a knit dress as a coverup. I also have a sarong but hardly ever wore it. This year I will get a new cover up and be good to go.

Hi Laura, I feel like it is time for us to stop torturing ourselves with this bathing suit shopping. Why put our pink skin body in front of the dressing room lights and put on a bikini that makes us look like something from the Twilight Zone. We know when we go in there it is going to hurt our feelings and make our whole day bad. Let's go a different route. Let's wear something suitable for the activity. Are we swimming or are we lounging in the sun? Let's get a suitable coverup for walking from the water to the lounge chairs. There is no reason we should all feel like we have to strut our stuff for the rest of our lives. Not gonna happen. Be proud sister!

Not yet! But they are GREAT and I still believe in the product. I'd start there Laura. You must get a sarong or wrap that works with the cozzie. It needn't be the same fabric, but it must work together. Also, get cute little knit dresses to wear over your cozzie too.

After that, I'd go the tankini route.

Interestingly, Eddie Bauer seems to be carrying the widest range of Miraclesuits right now. There's a new one, the Rialto, plus the Sonatina in a "rock the croc" fabric that's cute (no relation to actual Crocs thank goodness), and the Escape in Blue Ray, which is a nice print. Plus they have shorts.

I guess I'd like to hear if Angie has had any of these new Miraclesuits on anyone yet this season ...

Thank you ladies! I just took time to go through Angie's posts on the subject and found a Miraclesuit she liked (the Sonatina) and some mention of Gottex, which I will check out. Plus, there's mention of wraps (sarongs) or the alternative of boyshorts for moms.

Didn't Antje go on a successful swimsuit hunt last year? I've got to track down that thread.

My current suit is Lands End from about 4 years ago, and it's a tankini so it's funny everyone mentions that brand. I *thought* I loved the suit until I saw photos of myself and realized it made me look chopped in two in an unflattering place. And the halter top made my shoulders look smaller and more sloped. Sigh! But I can see how it would be very flattering on an inverted triangle.

I have a strong preference for tankinis. It's ironic, considering my midsection is my biggest trouble zone and needs to be covered! But, since I'm so short, a tankini will cover it all up and show no skin, and something about having the line there across my tummy confuses the eye so you don't notice it.

I like to go with a patterned top, and plain black bottoms. That's because I find that the bottoms tend to wear out fastest - from sand or pool cement rubbing when you sit. If you go with a two-piece, you can then replace the bottoms if they get worn out before the top.

My favorite shape for the tankini top is halter style. It minimized my broad shoulders, and you can adjust the ties to keep things from sagging. Underwire is good too. I don't care so much for anything with pads (I don't need the bulk, but also, even small ones tend to deteriorate over time, move around, etc), or for shelf bras, because they give you the uniboob look. But I do have one shelf bra tankini from VS that I wear if we're doing active things - it squashes things down like a sports bra.

Colors: black is always safe, but color is more flattering. I like blues and turquoise - anything that complements my hazel eyes. Bear in mind that if you pop a sundress over it, it's nice if the suit complements the dress. A fun color can be nice for this.

Lands' End has a lot of nice tankinis to choose from. Victoria's Secret does too, so I recommend checking that site as well. Otherwise, best strategy is to hit up a department store and try on EVERYTHING. It's very hard to know which suit is going to look best, until you try it on.

I think Angie did a post on cover-ups before?

My favorite swimsuits are from Lands' End. The prices are between $50-$80. They really have a great selection of styles. I think they run very true to size and have several fits (regular torso, long).

One area of my wardrobe that has remained untouched during my entire YLF makeover is swimwear. But now we have two short getaways planned, one in Feb. and one in March, and both will involve quite a bit of time around swimming pools. We also have a big family reunion planned in July, and some of that time will be spent at a pool and a lake. Help! I need to look good and appropriate as MOTG.

What brands should I consider? What styles and colors will suit my hourglass/pear body type? Do I buy a matching cover-up? And how much should I expect to pay? (I really don't want to shop for a swimsuit again for a LONG time).
