thanks for the input. Janet, funny enough, I had a knit grey dress similar. It was my first 't-shirt' dress as I called it at the time (aka jersey lol).
I tried on a few maxi skirts at TJ Maxx (Max Studio, Design History) and think I do want to go with a dress, either lined jersey or a floaty poly.
I know it's not the most practical, but I keep coming back to the white lined maxi. I do already have some shirt dresses and surplice poly ones I could use as well.
Maybe I just want a white dress, and am making excuses! :)

I am with Janet here. I think something other than black or white would be best. But I also really like your idea of something to throw on over the suit in a casual way. It makes a ton of sense.

Oh, I forgot to comment on the dress/skirt issue I ran into with a similar garment. The top stretches out with wear, and starts sliding down with the least little bit of activity. I found myself constantly hitching the top back up and adjusting, and after a few washings and wearings the problem only got worse. Granted, I've got a lot in the chest department, so asking a strapless top to stay up on my girls is a pretty demanding task, but I imagine the problem would be fairly universal. Based on that experience, I'd recommend a dress with straps.

I'm kind of wondering if you might keep looking, and find some options that are not just black or white, for the reasons already given (see-through white, heat-trapping black). Although one of my favorite beach coverups is black. It's just a little simple black bamboo knit dress with a v-neck top, and subtle drawstring at the empire waist (which I keep very loose for ease of pulling over my head to put it on), and a very slightly flared skirt that hits at the knee. It's about five years old so it's getting a little faded, but it's perfect for when I want something I'm not worried about messing up. I think I found it at Marshall's or TJMaxx. It looks a lot like this one:

http://athleta.gap.com/browse/.....=584853002

They have some cute options on the Athleta site as well.

I have also started wearing my Rachel Pally sleeveless knee-length caftan dress as a coverup, especially when i go on vacation and want to travel light, with pieces that do double-duty. I did a quick search and didnt find my dress, but I found this, which I think would look awesome on you, although I admit her stuff is expensive.

http://www.amazon.com/Rachel-P.....38;sr=1-41

This is not to say there is anything wrong with the ones you posted! I just thought I'd make it even more difficult and throw some other options at you.

Humm, this is a tough one. How hot do the temps get? Black will absorb heat, white reflects it, so you might be hotter (temp. wise!) in the black. And if you're playing beach volleyball, you'll be tripping or falling in the black (that won't make a good impression on your teammates), but maybe not in the white because it scoops up in the front. But then with the black you could roll it/fold over at the waist to make it shorter (that's what I do with mine).

OK, so I'm not much help. All I've done is ask questions. I'll go back to drinking my coffee and dreaming about beach weather.

yeah, I love the idea of the white dress, but the reality of jersey knit in such a light color may be more suited to yachting with the rich and famous in the Riviera than my actual lifestyle tee hee.

#1 would be my choice. You have the versatility of wearing it. as a dress or skirt, it has a lovely drape...and it's black

Diana, thanks for the links! It's funny, I immediately really liked the Hard Tail skirt and then I remembered it's pretty much a long version of the J Crew I have. HA, no wonder I'm drawn to it! [ EDIT: maybe I should just use my shorter white cotton skirt for now and see how I like it beach front :) ]
I guess I should clarify about beach dress - I mean for getting there, socializing, maybe tossing the frisbee or whatnot. I'm thinking casual-get-together-near-the-lake more than actual wet-sports-after-clothing if that makes sense. (Lake Tahoe is a pretty chilly body of water year round and I only swim in it a few times a year)

Hmm, I think they'll both look good with your bathing suits. However, I'm not crazy about the fact that they're jersey. For swim cover-ups I prefer something in a loose woven fabric, like a gauzy type cotton or linen fabric or something like that. I don't like how jersey sticks to damp skin, and like you said, it can be a bit clingy. It's not really breezy enough, I think.

What about a cotton skirt like this?
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/ha.....ategoryid=

Or a loose shirtdress style?
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/sa.....038;contex

#1 just looks like too much dress for the beach to me. Not just the long sleeves but the cuffs and collar make it more of a real dress to my eye. Something tunic-y with long sleeves could work. Just IMHO, not based on any claim to fashion sense

Mia, good point about clashing - and as I thought about it, I could layer up a colored sweater or crop jacket, or whatever! over the white tank dress. The print with sleeves, not so much. My biggest worry is the lump n bump possibilities with the jersey. But maybe lined will solve this, for the most part?
And thanks for the heads up about the trending HI looks!

#2 was what was trending in Hawaii at the new year. I like it because gives a fair bit of coverage and has a nice flowy feel that is "beachy". Also so easy to toss on which is must have for me in beach dress.

The sheer one might be hard to wear and a patterned suit might clash?

Still toying with the idea of a beach/swim dress or skirt that I could also wear casually when not being used as a cover up.
I had the Bobeau maxi skirt as an idea http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/bo.....tback=3520 and this maxi dress in mind.

The white maxi dress is lined, but white jersey isn't what I'd think of as the most forgiving material over a bathing suit. Maybe if belted low, right above my bikini, I could blouson the torso over the, ahem, muffin area.
Any preference?

[EDIT: I decided the print dress is out of the running, so between the white tank dress and Bobeau skirt]

yay - white jersey tank dress
nay - maxi skirt worn as both dress and skirt

thanks!
