I'm more of an unsweetener, usually by ruining things with scuffing, ripping or spilling.

Yep. I'd do that! I have changed buttons on a jacket recently, adding a stronger, more dramatic look. For me, it's the balance of sweetness with clean lines that I'm searching for.

And I love my Born

velvet laces! :-)

I often "sweeten up" slacks, button shirts and cardigans with jewelry and either slip on flats or the oxfords with velvet laces. And my hair is short, so I always feel the need for lipstick and earrings.

The organza laces are a great solution.

I like them! I don't know that I've done anything similar. I have a pair of Born oxfords that came with a second set of laces that were velvet ribbon. I tried them in the shoes but never wore them that way--just went back to the plain laces!

I hate blingy bits on my jeans, too! It's interesting what each of needs to feel balanced. I love my zippered and buckled moto boots, but my black leather jacket has delicate floral stitching. I wear a man's oversized watch, but wear it loose, like a bracelet.

I'm the one who picks the blingy bits off my bluejeans' back pockets, but I liked this update to a pair of oxfords posted by Janice Riggs at The Vivienne Files: A Couple of Small Upgrades...

Teeny little undrilled 2mm pearls that I FINALLY found available at One of a Kind Artist Emporium. Highly recommended!

Changing the laces was a great idea. It's amazing how a small change can make such a big impact. The shoes are fab, BTW.

I am a chronic unsweetener-- I'm just not that in love with anything you could describe as "fem" or sweet". Moto boots with skirts would be one example.

This week I appreciated the article Sterling posted that mentioned "unsweetening femininity." But today, I decided I wanted to sweeten a pair of Oxfords to make them more my style. I bought these Stuart Weitzman Oxfords at the Nordstrom anniversary sale, but found them a bit too masculine with the wide legged slacks I've been wearing them with. So, I bought a pair of organza shoe laces from Etsy (for about $7 with shipping.) This little change makes them work better with my wardrobe and my style persona.

Do you ever sweeten or unsweeten clothing to suit you?
