Anchie, your posts about what I wear out and sweaters have helped me to take advantage of Boden’s sale and give their sweaters a try. These are the three that I am hoping will work for me. Two are ones that Angie has, so always a good start.

I’ve also had good luck with the Uniqlo merino I bought last year, on a great discount after Xmas, but even at full price it’s inexpensive and wearing well. But I’m often not fond of their colour selections either.

Style Fan - I probably can order from Shopbop, but I never tried. I always hesitate ordering somewhere for the first time, but if that goes well, next time is much easier.
suntiger - that was another sweater that I ordered and returned this year. It was really lovely and I was torn, but it was too cropped for my needs.
Jessikams - Madewell is another brand that I don’t have any experience with, but it always gets great reviews here on the forum, so this is something else to try. My problem is that I always rely on just a few brands that I am loyal to, and when they don’t have what I am looking for, I don’t easily try something new. Especially because I am online shopper and like to play safe. Hope that makes sense
Vix - thank you, glad to hear I am not alone in this. I am still in this frustrating cycle of orders and returns, but hopefully some brands that I got recommendations here will have something for me. Those sweaters that a little bit above the basic layering ones are very difficult, glad that you found some. I also don’t like all over big.
Gretchen - I am not in US, so even though most online shops this days deliver internationally, when you add shipping and duties and not free and easy returns- it’s not worth it for me.

I’m also a 24/7 sweater person. Those kinds of holes make me cry!

If Boden was close, you might have a look at Talbots. They do a lot of thinner weight print sweaters, and tend to be quick on shipping/returns.

I’ve also tried Peruvian Connection for the first time this season and found a couple good options (but truthfully, their website needs WORK!)

On other option, if cashmere is your game, is Neiman Marcus. They usually put their house brand cashmere on sale after Christmas, and it comes in a variety of cuts and colors.

Good luck!

Hi Anchie --

Not much advice for you but I wanted to grouse about the sweater situation too. Like you I'm a sweater person year-round; if I'd lost 4 sweaters this season like you I'd be such a pain!

Could the BR ones have caught on rings, belt buckles, employee name badges -- anything like that? Or something in the wash? [Is the hole in the light-colored one down at the cuff? If so, I'd be tempted to do a quick darn and fold the cuff back. That orange one, though...tough placement!]

BR knits are very hit-or-miss IME. I have the crewneck merino from a couple of years ago and they've been fine (boring layering pieces). It's the Ann Taylor 100% merino scoopnecks of eons ago that I really miss but I have some 2nd hand Uniqlo merino that look pretty good -- and the owner wore them a ton. Basic, though.

Hopefully the ideas everyone posted above will get you fixed up. UK-based Pure Collection comes to mind as a possibility but IDK if the styles would appeal. Maybe United Colors of Benetton for something in the lower price point that's a little more zippy than Uniqlo?

I really wanted some semi-statement but NOT patterned sweaters this year after a few years out of the sweater rat race but...ugh. I can do blousey + narrow sleeve, slouchy-sleeved + narrow body, or narrow + narrow. The all-over big is just terrible on me, period.

After a very frustrating look -- buy -- return cycle I ended up with a couple I love* and a couple that will do. And putting a few that I'd demoted to weekends back into play out of desperation.

Good luck with the hunt!

* for those in the shipping zone, I tried Century21 online -- c21stores.com -- for the first time and that was my overall best (out of Boden, Bloomingdales, Lord & Taylor, Nordstrom & the Rack, more I'm deliberately blanking on...

Madewell seems to have pretty colors of knitwear, but no idea about quality. I can vouch for COS knitwear though- I have a ton of it, and it wears well except for some pilling on the acrylic blends. Most of it is labeled washable. They do have some crazy draped or boxy cuts, but tucked away in a less noticeable rack there is always a lot of basic stuff too— plain v or crew necks in a few colors, in merino or cashmere or silk blends.

Wishing you luck!

I have heard that putting sweaters in the freezer (in a freezer bag) will put an end to moths. I put my sweaters in the freezer at the end of the season for 2 weeks with lavender.

Can you order from Shopbob? Or Everlane? There were some interesting sweaters on their sites. Angie posted about Shopbob last week.

Inge, what a coincidence, COS, Massimo Dutti and & Other Stories are all shops that I visited for the first time last week. They are not usual mall stores, they all opened recently and I think there is only one of them in the city located very close to each other in the city center. So when I went looking for COS scarf I briefly stopped in all 3. Massimo Dutti looked really promising, I am sure I will return.

I was also going to say COS is worth a look (and yes, items can look shapeless on the hanger, at COS you just have to try on anything you like to assess it properly;-)

Oh, and how about Massimo Dutti, Anchie? It's been a while since I last bought something from them, but the quality used to be nice.

I'm adding some below (most of the solid-coloured ones are available in other colours too).

Suz - great report. Love all your new additions. I don’t like t-necks for my self anymore, have issue with my jawline in them. I am also tempted by Boden hoodie, and it is 50% off at the moment. BR cashmere silk looks promising and colors sounds great. Not sure if available in EU store, we don’t get the full collection and I didn’t notice them, but will look again. I noticed this BR cashmere in my color, also 50% off, but no experience with BR cashmere. Is it OK quality?
Bijou - yes, I have few Zara ones in my wardrobe, always seduce by color and low price but quality is not great in my experience, they don’t last even the whole season. Not sure if it’s worth constant churn.

Janet - agree completely that selection is disappointing. Too many cropped styles, too many synthetic fabrics and boring colors. I have ordered and returned a lot of sweaters already, and I am getting frustrated. Even Boden did not work for me this season. I tried Tilda in light blush pink, fit and quality were ok, but color was awful on me. I wanted to try it in another color but none of the current ones are speaking to me.
Bonny - thanks for the COS recommendation. I was in COS store for the first time few days ago, but they were running a huge sale and it was so crowded with long lines and I did not have the time to try on their sweaters. They looked very boxy and not very appealing on the hanger, but I should give them a chance next time.

bj1111 - yes, agree, Uniqlo merino is very good quality especially for the price. Great for layering but too boring on their own. I have two - off white and mustard yellow. But as you said colors are nit that exciting. But good choice for basic neutrals.
Joyce B - you scared me I really do hope that those are not moth holes. I noticed them after washing on the gentles cycle, the same how I wash more delicate items without issues. Not sure what happened.
rachylou - not all sweaters are created equal. I don’t really understand that. I have example of two sweaters- same fabric content and same price point, one is this year BR that I have to de-pill after each wear and another is 6-7 years old Boden that I never had to do that. See pictures, guess which one is which

I wear sweaters like you do over my winter months. My favourite is by Zara - I have versions of this sweater in blush, grey, ivory, black, navy and red - though my black, navy and red ones (that do not have the frill on the sleeve) now need replacing.

Like you I need to update seasonally, so sweaters are something that I prefer to not pay too much for (because even the most expensive ones do not last long for me).

It is not a knitwear season -- or at least not a pullover season. Boden (maybe?) excepted. Having said that, like you, I wear knits almost all the time, so I have purchased a few new items and some are still on the way.

This year's purchases:

J. Crew Fair Isle/ Icelandic sweater in cashmere, purchased on sale. Lovely quality at the sale price. Very warm. Nice drape. Oversized, not fitted as described. Excellent with grey hair. Would work just as well with a warm grey, I believe. I expect this one to last at least 4 seasons.

Lord and Taylor plain classic merino charcoal T-neck. This is an essential that will last for years -- a repeat style that I wear on its own or layered over shirts. Nothing fancy. Should last me 3 to 4 years of hard wear based on previous experience.

J. Crew cropped "Fair Isle." Not as nice quality as #1 (but also cheaper) and easier to layer under a jacket. Should last 2 years.

BR silk/ cashmere -- this is really a layering top for fall/winter. Nice drape. Warmer than its weight. Colour nice for me -- comes in many colours. I would try it -- moths and washers are not as hard on this combo, I suspect. At least try on and see -- colours are all rich and lovely. There is a blood orange and a yellow that would look great on you as well as cobalt, pale blue, navy, light blue, olive, etc. https://bananarepublic.gap.com.....id=braff40

Zella hoodie -- love the style, drape, and texture but it is pilling horribly already. Sad -- but not the end of the world, since I can wear it as loungewear for at least another year. Forum members (LaPed and others) suggested to me that merino cashmere blends can be especially bad for pilling. Lesson learned.

On their way to me now -- have not yet tried -- all purchased on sale:

2 Boden Tilly roll necks, striped and plain navy -- this style (in these colours) are wardrobe essentials to me and I expect that both will be keepers.

Berwick: it is a slouchy oversized weekend sweater in mixed cotton/ merino -- good option for my current climate, and the reviews are terrific. Elizabeth P has this one and loves it. Christina also has it.

Cashmere hoodie, striped -- I will be an Angie clone. This is sort of a no-brainer for me. Very pricey at the regular price but much more reasonable for me on sale and I am likely to wear it for several years -- first 2 years in regular wardrobe rotation and later as a loungewear item.

I've retired 9 items of knitwear this F/W also. And I'm wearing several items that are past their prime, just because I can't find alternatives. So this basically replaces what was retired.

My best, hard-wearing sweaters were from Scotland... sadly the Scottish store closed. I really have no idea where to get such a sweater anymore. I used to like F21 for interesting ones, but they’re not interesting this year and they never lasted more than one or two seasons.

Those look like moth holes to me. I have had better luck storing my sweaters in space bags than hanging them in the closet. Sorry that your pretty sweaters got ruined.

I am a fan of uniqlo extra fine merino knits. Wears hard, machine washable, great drape. But boring colors and no pattern unless you count robbing as a pattern.

I like the two sweaters that I got from COS. I duplicated in another color because I liked the first one so much. They are a heavier knit that drapes well. I think Angie has the white version. They been making them for a few years and offer different colors each season.

Sweaters are kind of disappointing me lately. Other than the two new Boden ones I got, which are great so far, so many of them seem to lack the quality their price points would seem to imply. And I would love some interesting yet flattering styles, but I’m not seeing much at a reasonable price point. A lot of things that are not just simple basics seem to be either tunics or cropped and boxy, neither of which is my best look. Or they’re available in only colors I don’t care for (everything right now seems to be pink or mustard...).

My favorite sweaters of this year are below. The one from Anthro feels more like a fleece but looks more like a sweater.

Happy Christmas to all who celebrate!
I need to refresh my sweater collection, and I am hoping to use after Christmas sales to do that. Sweaters are my favorite tops and I wear them almost exclusively. Thin layering ones under blazers for work, more interesting ones with jeans on their own on weekends. Linen and cotton ones in summer, merino and cashmere in winter. I rarely wear other types of tops - I have few t-shirts that I wear at home, and couple of blouses that I wear on the hottest summer days, but other than that - sweater it is. Unfortunately sweaters are not the most lasting items of clothing. Because of that I am always on the lookout for interesting ones in my color palette, and I refresh them often. My collection got pretty thin recently. In addition to regular replacement of 2-3 seasons old sweaters that are looking tired and worn out, I also had some bad luck lately. I had to retire four sweaters after only few wears - one ended up in wrong laundry cycle and shrank to XS size, another had stain in front that I could not get rid of, and 2 developed holes after first very gentle wash. Those two with holes are botn BR and I am now hesitant to buy more from them. Do you have any recommendations for me? Where should I look? Do you have a sweater that you a particularly happy with?
