I never could make it work for me. Perhaps because I'm fidgety even when I'm sitting still

I do this when I'm inside at an event, and no sweater or jacket is too cold, and arms in sleeves is too warm. I'm generally sitting. I do it for comfort rather than style, though.

Don't judge, but I do this from time to time. It's practical for hot days where I expect to need a sweater indoors due to air conditioning.

Tricks are: unless you have a very long neck, the sweater should be thin (those knitted silk sweaters that aren't popular right now are ideal - so is "summerweight" cashmere); the sweater needs to be a waist or high hip length sweater, not a long boyfriend cardigan; must have long sleeves (3/4 won't work); if it's a cardigan, button every button; and fold under the top of the sweater so the part that rests against your neck is straight.

Agree Joy. Shoulders help, and it's also a static look-- standing around drinking mint juleps--not for activities.

It probably has something to do with one's shoulder shape and size or how fast one moves. I don't think it works for me because I walk too fast.

I can't pull this off. Nor the Milania Trump coat- over- the-shoulders look. And don't like feeling like things are slithering off.
Is there some other " look" that gives you the same vibe? Maybe a big scarf.

maybe I should knit a scarf that looks like the sleeves, LOL. Glad it's not just me.

I think this is one of those looks that works in photos but is a PITA IRL if you're doing anything other than sitting still.

I wonder if you need a longer neck for this look. Not sure.

Thinner lightweight sweaters work best.

The chunkier ones make you look like a sheep has you in a headlock.

I was looking through some of my pins and I saw a couple that used the old sweater tied around the shoulders look to elevate the simple tee and pants. While I like the look, I've never been able to pull it off and look graceful. Is there a trick? What kind of sweater? Can mere mortals living life without a stylist sidekick following us around for street photos make this look good in real life? (Feeling like I missed an entire of seventh grade semester of how to be a girl class about now.)
