I also think acrylic is often the culprit. Chunkier knits also seem to pill more than fine ones. Expensive sweaters and cashmere sweaters also pill, so price and material don't guarantee a pill-free experience. I've given up. Most of my sweaters are cheap because I cannot bring myself to spend so much on a sweater that may or may not last more than one season. At least this way I know up front that they probably won't last, and I won't feel bad about it when it comes time to toss them. And sometimes, I'm pleasantly surprised. Better than some of the unpleasant surprises I've had in the past with pricier sweaters.

I have a 100% cashmere sweater from Jones New York that just does not pill. I love it and when I took it off the other day and hung it in the closet yet again with out pills, I thought how great a sweater it is. On the other hand I had a pair of 100% acrylic gloves that were nothing but one big pill so I wonder if it is the acrylic fiber that causes the probelm with some sweaters.

Its funny that you brought this up. I was just thinking about this very topic last night as I wa trying to fall alseep.

I think sweater pilling is a fabric quality issue. I have a few high end sweaters that do no pill. They have a very tight weave and have a high wool content. It seems that some sweaters pill more than others, and I can't help but think it has to do with the acrylic content.

My cheaper sweaters tend to pill where the arms rub against my chest. I just pull the pills off by hand. I have no idea if the shavers are harmful to your sweaters. I would imagine over time, the fabric will become thin where the pilling occurs...but by then, the sweater will be out of style, or you'll be sick of de-pilling it!

So, I've sort of resigned myself to the fact that if I buy a sweater, it's going to pill at some point. I have a sweater shaver that I use to remedy this problem, but I was wondering how other people dealt with it? When I am looking at a sweater at the store, I give it the "pill test," that is, I lightly rub it between my thumb and index finger to see if the fibers form pills. No sweater has yet to pass the test, so if I really love the item, I will usually buy it regardless. I would love to find one that did though! Is there some brand or fiber that people have had good luck with little or no pilling?
Are sweater shavers bad for clothes--is there a better way to deal with pills, etc?
