Inge thank you for that incredible effort! I really liked the Martin + Osa grey low cowl neck sweater. I'd have to try it on to see where the cowl hits on my chest. I also liked the first Spiegel sweater--and I think that would look awesome on Maya.

Along with my full bust, I have broad, rounded shoulders--so I typically avoid anything exaggerated on my shoulders. Like shawl collars, or buttoned turtlenecks that are designed to be worn unbuttoned and fanned out over the shoulder.

I also think it's interesting to see what some people view as "slight" or "subtle"--like the dolman sleeve on Laura's cardigan. To me, those sleeves look like a very exaggerated dolman--nothing slight about it. And there is no way I could wear that under any of my coats. I'm lucky if I can wear a fine guage sweater under some of my coats.

I appreciate everyone's help and suggestions and I hope I don't come across as being difficult, negative or unrealistic. I totally understood the point Inge was making with all those sweaters--they are just not necklines, or shoulders that I can wear. I am not the kind of person who wants 20 different sweaters. I just want enough to rotate one or two per week for the duration of winter. Realistically, I could do that with 5 to 7 sweaters, without getting sick of wearing them.

Inge, I actually own a sweater a lot like the first one from BR (and it's from BR, but several years old). It's in the pieces-I-love-but-can't-wear-because-of-my-huge-rack collection currently, but I'm strongly considering taking it out and breaking the rules. I don't personally think it looks bad or odd on me, and in fact it seems to make my chest look a bit smaller rather than bigger. I am thinking of taking it out of hiding, and maybe even replacing it with one of the ones you posted because the colors are so lovely :)

I also have a black sweater like the FC one from Dillard's, also in hiding. That one is a bit harder to wear because the chunky cowl part sticks out over my chest and just kind of hangs there awkwardly. "Bony" chests lend themselves better to having fabric drape nicely. With a large bust, nothing really drapes. It clings and stretches.

Unfortunately you are right that most "interesting" v necks seem to be in the higher price range.

As for asymmetry, I love the idea in theory but in practice it's very difficult for a busty girl to pull off. I tried this jacket: http://www1.macys.com/catalog/.....ryID=17047 while I was on my jacket hunt a few months ago and it looked simply ridiculous. However, the Guess jacket I ultimately ended up buying has a *slight* asymmetric zipper, which I can get away with, but a straight zipper is still ideal. It just creates an odd bump where there shouldn't be one. When I tried the blazer from Macys, the top button landed RIGHT in the middle of my boob! It looked horrid.

Laura, that sweater is SO pretty! Unfortunately that belt would probably end up tying somewhere around my hips, but it's gorgeous.

I used to be unmoving in my choice of necklines, especially seeing how bad some of them looked on other busty ladies, but I think I'm willing to forgo aesthetic for comfort and more variety. I'm starting to come to terms with the fact that my chest is never going to look "small," so there is no point in trying to make it that way. I'm tired of worrying about looking tarty all the time and having to wear camisoles under EVERYTHING I own.

Inge is pure genius, so I am sure she has everyone here covered, but I wanted to add that I own this sweater in grey, and I can personally vouch for the fact that it would look even better on someone with a bigger chest It has *slight* dolman sleeves, but nothing that can't fit under a coat.

Great topic Nicole!!

I must say I tend to agree with most of what Maya says. I used to have a B-cup (now a C) and often the cutest tops with the details that I like (the ones that Maya mentions for smaller chests) don't even work on me. So I can imagine how difficult it must be for ladies with a larger bust.
And it's true, I think it's easier to 'cover up' a 'bony chest' with lots of interesting details like ruffles, bow-ties etc. than having to work around a larger bust.

Having said that, have you ever tried tops with exaggerated and/or asymmetrical collars Maya and Nicole? It might be a matter of trial and error, but maybe some of them will work for you. Shawl collars/deeper cowlnecks or 'bigger & looser' turtlenecks might work too. And there not so easy to find, but V-necks with quirky details are a nice change from the usual plain 'boring' ones. As are, as Angie mentioned, tops with interesting sleeves etc.

Budget unfortunately does play a role here as well. Often, when I find beautiful tops that are a bit more unique, they're in a higher price range...

A few examples. Please ignore prices, fabrics, knits, patterns, belts etc. It's not about these particular items but about the collar types (or sleeves).

Hm, I'd rather have the option of wearing high necklines than low ones, just because there is much more variety. A scoop, U, V, and roundneck are almost identical. In fact, aside from v-necks, I honestly can't even tell what the difference is between the rest. I do not know what differentiates a roundneck from a scoopneck from a u-neck. Whatever it is, it's definitely subtle.

Plus with a small chest, you can always add details, chest pockets, ruffles, bows, and anything else that add interest--with a large chest, you're basically stuck with boring "clean" basic styles. I can't really agree that there is even nearly the same amount of restriction for someone with a small chest as their is with a large. I speak with such confidence (maybe stubbornness) on this matter only because I have lived in both body types (yes, I had a B cup once upon a time), and having a small chest was dreamy. I had so many pretty tops that I can no longer wear and it just kills me! I still keep them around because I can't bear to part with them. I am also not especially "big" anywhere else, so I find it awkwardly out of proportion. And, of course, it's just really uncomfortable.

I realize there is no solution to this, but I have to say it all out loud because it really is bothersome and I get the sense that people underestimate just how annoying it really is. At least in my case (and maybe Tarzy as well), it's a lot easier said than done being happy/accepting of a body part that causes so much frustration.

I like the way this thread is thinking. Here’s my 2 cents:

o	Having a larger chest does restrict you to certain necklines. However, so does a bony one. I have a bony chest and I need to bypass tops I love the look of all the time. I too constantly wear the same neckline – high with lots of coverage. It is what it is. That’s the flip side of the coin.

o	Nicole, Maya pretty much mentioned all the best neckline options for your body type. I’d like to focus on fabric composition. You need to think of how you like to wear layers. You can’t wear anything too thick if you need to wear a coat over your knitwear. This is a good reason to bypass chunky knitwear (and that it’s often unflattering). If you live in a warmer climate you can wear knitwear that serves as outerwear (chunky knits and dolman sleeves). You can’t fit a dolman sleeve into a coat (unless it’s a cape). You have to base a lot of your knitwear decisions on how you like to layer the item.

o	Pay more attention to sleeve detail if your neckline choices are restrictive.

o	Basic V-neck pullovers look masculine and I generally do not encourage the item UNLESS it’s dolled up – enter Antje’s reasoning. For Antje they look and are fab because they act as a layering piece for other bells and whistles. As an item on its own, I feel you need to watch out. Opt for something more feminine.

In the spirit of New Year – by all means start that thread, Antje.

Antje, that's a terrific idea!

Tarzy, I'd also like to second Antje about that GAP vest. You look terrific in it. I tried it on and I don't have enough on top to fill it out, so it doesn't fit well. I'm very glad somebody else looks great in it. I really liked that outfit on you.

Tarzy - I've never had a big chest so obviously I cannot understand what it's like. But I wanted to assure you that the issue of "looky here at the bust" is really not there on the observer side of things. When you sported the menswear look, I -along with everyone else I'm sure- saw fun ruffles and a stylish vest, NOT a big chest.
And for warmth, put on that new leopard scarf!
Maybe I need to start a new thread. I might want to propose a joint YLF New Year's resolution to focus more on the wonderful assets we each have (as part of our bodies, and in our clothes) and less on the ones we consider "problem spots". It's so powerful to experience how a focus on the positive can distract from the perceived negative. Okay, I'm getting too woowoo or preachy or something, I'll shut up now

Oh - and I wanted to add - now that it is actually "cold" in LA - I don't have any shirts that keep my neck warm. Every thing I own is a v-neck! Brrrr.

Maya - sing it, sister! I hear you.

I have so many wrap tops I could open a store. Wraps and Vs, wraps and Vs.

Plus, I live in LA where 10 months out of the year it's t-shirt weather. Finding a t-shirt or even a knit shirt that fits, doesn't cling, doesn't look sloppy - incredibly hard for the big busted.

As I said in the other post, I've just about given up on woven shirts. I keep trying, but they are just not comfy. Everyone loved the ruffled white shirt I tried, but I can't help but feel it's a huge neon sign pointing to my chest - LOOKY HERE AT THE BUST!!!

Cardigans are really hard for me. Because I have hips too, cardi's ride up, and instead of getting a nice thin waist, I get this odd roll in the middle. Aargh!

I'd like to stick up for the "plain old v-neck". I think having several of those in colors that flatter you are an essential wardrobe staple. Add a camisole in a different color (peeking out at the top and/or bottom), a great scarf or statement necklace, and you are wonderfully put together for a smart casual look.
Ann Taylor, the Loft, J Crew, BR, Express, Zara are all great sources for basic sweaters.

I have to be honest here: I think having a large bust is one of the most crippling body types to have in terms of how to dress.

Think of all the necklines we can't wear: ballet/boatnecks, crewnecks, funnel necks, chunky cowl necks, turtlenecks, whatever neckline this is:

http://www.urbanoutfitters.com.....038;color=

...and almost all woven tops.

All we can wear are v necks, low-cut cowls, square necklines, scoopnecks/u-necks/roundnecks which are all virtually the same, and sweetheart necklines. If you have broad shoulders, you're even more limited. I don't personally like sweetheart necklines, so that restricts me to 3 kinds.

We also can't wear any kind of details like tie necks, ruffles, or anything that will pull or potentially cause fit problems at the bust. No empire seams (I can sometimes get away with it, but I'm finding it increasingly more difficult). No ties if you're shortwaisted because they usually end up hitting right below your boobs, which looks weird.

It's extremely frustrating. There are parts of my body which I regularly fight with, but none that I'd consider changing except for my chest. I absolutely hate being busty. Other body parts like my bum I get frustrated with, but I don't really hate or want to change. But I would sell my soul for a C cup.

Having said all of that, I'm not really sure how to answer the question, because to me the busty body type restricts your choices enough that you can't really break out much. I'd just try experimenting with layering. With your broad shoulders, it's even more difficult because you have to make sure the neckline isn't too wide.

I'm really not sure what else can be done. Maybe Angie will enlighten us and prove me wrong. I hope so. I am getting soooo sick of bypassing cute tops, and having to wear the same thing over and over again. It's boring. Tops are the part of a wardrobe where I think you can have the most fun, other than with accessories. I'm quite sick and tired of the same old necklines, and constantly looking down my shirt to make sure nothing is showing. I don't have a sexy or alluring style at all, but I always seem to have cleavage issues and bits of bra poking out, even when I'm wearing a cami. I think a lot of people tend to assume that if you're busty and you're showing cleavage, you're trying to show off, which simply isn't true. We just can't help it.

I'm sick of it. want to try and find ways of layering with higher necklines to break up the chest area a bit, but first I need to own some higher necklines, which I don't.

OK *deep breath* that was quite a rant. To summarize the parts that might be helpful: Stick with vnecks and narrow scoopnecks, but look for interesting layering combos. Maybe try some scarves?

I used to buy v-neck pull over sweaters in every color. This year I've limited myself to two. The rest of the time, I wear cardigans (crew and v-neck) or jackets.
I purchased the merino wool ones from JCrew in a vibrant red/orange and a rich grape color. I wear them with printed skirts/tights/boots, or collared shirts and jeans. Today I'm wearing the purple sweater over a collared shirt and my cream puffer vest over both. I added a fun striped colorful scarf too. If you get just a few great colors, I think you can extend your v-neck sweaters pretty far.

Wow, I had no idea I had so many comrades in the sweater crisis! You all have touched on issues I'm having--sweaters that are too short, too bulky, or bad necklines. I like the first three ATL sweaters you posted Violet. I avoid cable knit for the reasons Joy mentioned. Cables tend to pull on the bust and that just emphasizes my boobs.

Today is warm but wet--but Friday we're supposed to get 6 to 8 inches snow. I'm going to hold off til after Christmas though. Everything goes on sale then!

I have several v-neck sweaters in my closet. I wear them a lot during the fall/winter. I like Ann Taylor Loft for sweaters. When I was in there last, they had a lot of different colors in some different styles.

Nicole, I too am glad that you wrote this post. I guess this is where I was kind of going with my post on what to pack for my trip. What to do about sweaters???? Like Maya said, I think there are way more options for the non-busty. I feel like the only options other than cardigans seem to be V-necks (of which the wrap might be a variant) & scoop necks. Maybe cowl necks??? Most sweaters out there seem to be crew necks which are not the most flattering. As much as I love the shawl collar trend, I don't think it looks that great on the well endowed - at least I haven't found one that is flattering yet!

All three of my current sweaters are too short for pants. That seems to be the biggest problem...finding longer sweaters, especially that aren't boxy. I've been wearing them over long tissue weight turtlenecks from Target so that the turtleneck hangs below the sweater as much as 6 or 8 inches, and I'm not so sure this is acceptable.
Nicole, I have a SIL who is curvy. She avoids ribbed or cable knits because they draw attention to her bust when they stretch across it. A knit that is too fine and clings isn't good either.

Nicole, I am so glad you raised this topic. Before YLF, I was a huge sweater-boots-jeans kinda girl. I have tons of sweaters but most are going unworn so far this year. They just don't work that well with my evolving style, and it's because they are not conducive to layering. (i.e. I wish there were more cardigans in my closet and fewer chunky, boxy turtlenecks!). Also for some reason I always liked my sweaters on the short side, hitting just below the waist. I guess because I'm petite and short-waisted? Who knows what I was thinking??

I'm going to be following this thread too!

We had a little arctic blast here the last few days, so I've been reaching for sweaters. I noticed several of my sweaters that used to fit me really well are not fitting me well anymore. Some of them are just too big, one has this weird bunching thing happening under my arms on the side of my bust, and some are just worn and stretched out. Such is the life of a knit!

Anyway, after Christmas I'd like to replenish my sweaters. I'd like to go in with a plan--so I don't buy things in desperation. I look best in V necks, but a girl's gotta have more than plain old V neck sweaters in her closet, right? One thing I absolutely do not like is any kind of adornment--beads, ribbon, decoration of any kind is not my cup of tea. I keep wishing I had a grey pull over sweater, so that will be tops on my list. I will greatly miss my turquois blue ATL V neck sweater--because the color was perfect for me.

I don't think I've bought any pull over sweaters since my YLF transformation. So I kind of feel like I'm starting from square one with this process. Any advice or guidance or style suggestions for me will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
