LP, the coat length sweater from Madewell is 100% merino. Don't know if you are interested in that one. And Madewell still has it available in all sizes.
It's the sweater coat I've been imagining in my mind for a couple of years. And to think I walked right past Madewell yesterday and didn't go in!

Looking at that Uniqlo link...how can a long 100% wool sweater cost $39.99? Does the factory that produced this garment pay their workers anything??? There's the cost of the wool, spinning into yarn, knitting up the fabric, creating the garment, packing and shipping to Uniqlo...etc...

LP, synthetic fibres come have a LONG way. My suggestion is to give them a chance. They can be a whole lot better than pure wool. Blends rock.

Interesting thoughts on proportion. I have tried some wide crops and they were bad on me - like really bad. But I can see how maybe a longer, as opposed to hip-length topper would be better. I do really like these J Crew blazers.

Thank you Greyscale! Just took a minute to browse Uniqlo, and it looks like they might have the winner. 100% wool, and the price is very reasonable for an experimental item.

I still might have to go try on the J Crew knit blazers, because I really like the way they look, but my gut feeling (as Suz, Angie, and others have confirmed) is that they're not quite long enough. I like the look of the Madewell options, but the high synthetic content put me off. I've been trying to avoid synthetic sweaters, for pilling, static, and longevity reasons. If I had a Madewell near me where I could go pet them, I might change my mind.

Lisa p, I'll be curious to see how the static issue plays out -- I have a pretty good collection of thick wool cardis, all shorter/boxier though, and don't have much of a static issue with any of them. I do anticipate mostly wearing fitted rib-knit turtlenecks and henleys underneath, so bunching should not be a problem, I hope.

Part of my goal here is to push my cropped pants as far into fall as I can by upping the cozy factor of the outfit as a whole. I have a couple pairs of mid-calf/taller ankle boots on the way to try out as part of this experiment as well.

I bought a long felted wool sweater coat thingy from Uniqlo last year and it was my favorite thing to wear with wide leg jeans. Excited for temps to drop low enough to wear it again. Though mine is definitely not a conventionally flattering shape, and longer than the ones you posted.

I can picture something like you're describing being the winter equivalent of your Everlane square cardigan... fits over many outfits and adds some interest. Also cozy.

Some I've had or have that work...First three work easily with narrow or wide pants or crops. These three all hit somewhere just above my knee. Below the knee would also work with a similar slim shape.

Last one from J. Crew a few years ago -- loved it over skinnies or a slim sheath/ shift or pencil skirt. NOT over anything wide. It covered my bum -- sort of mid-thigh.

For myself (similar height/ proportions) it works WAY better if it is a longer-line, leaner SWEATER over top of wide pants or crops. Otherwise it cuts me in half and is just overwhelming. I can wear that kind of swacket over top of slim pants or a tube skirt and it looks great -- but not anything that ends low hip and then has wide bottoms. ETA, more like #2 vs. the J. Crew swacket (which I really like, by the way...just not necessarily over wide pants, for myself.)

I really like the first of your set the best. To my eye, the proportions are gorgeous. I don't think you don't have to do all the way to a duster length (although I like them too).

Swackets. ;) A favourite local boutique and customer of mine is currently instagramming one of these - much like the grey JCrew. Very unstructured and fairly slouchy, but it's really caught my attention too. I think , unless it's lined though , that it's a better idea than reality. I envision staticky blouse sleeves, bunched up short sleeves, and all sorts of other mishaps. Unless you are slim and trim enough to rock a fitted turtleneck underneath, then it would be awesome

Oh, that Alfani is really cute! I've not embraced bell sleeves yet, but that looks super tempting.

Here's a smattering of long-over-wide 'fits. 1 and 2, nice clean neutral mixes with minimal detailing, are probably most similar to what's in my mind, but I love the idea of pinstripes (3/6) as well -- visually lengthening, and menswear-inspired.

I contemplated adding a blush/rose linen duster this summer (like in 4/5), but ultimately ran out of budget and decided I don't need anymore summer-weight toppers for now.
I guess what I'm debating is whether long-blazer-length is enough, or do I have to go all the way to sweater duster? Hmmm.

The Jcrew to my eye works best with skinnies/slim pants, but that may be because the regular on 5'0 me is pretty long. Also looks adorable over a dress.

I splurged on those two Jcrew swackets, as I've been upping my topper game because I've been freezing in meetings and on airplanes lately, and they are warm and will travel well.

The charcoal open-front is a size XS and fits just right. I got the black in a small (neither are offered in petites). It's probably a bit too big, but the xs is sold out. I did see an xxs in the store but it was too small (didn't fit in a cool slouchy way). Regardless, there's something about the small and the way it fits in the shoulders that totally reminds me of the 1980s, so I'm keeping it.

Yesterday I was at Macy's and found a cute Alfani swacket that has bell sleeves. It's cotton, not wool, but will work for my travels to the south / as well as next Spring. This one:
https://www.macys.com/shop/pro.....&Cate

(Note to any apple shapes, I had to size up for this one to a PM).

My rule of thumb, topper-wise, has always been to opt for hip-length if it's unstructured, and go longer only if the garment and fabric are somewhat structured, not slouchy or fluid. But this fall the one thing that keeps catching my eye are long wool toppers with jacket styling. Something about the length + slouch + coziness seems really appealing. And I'd like to try my wide leg crops (one pair in rust, one pair in black -- see Finds) with an intentionally long topper -- so far I've only worn them with cropped/boxy tops and toppers. Is this a crazy tree for me to be barking up??

It was the J Crew versions below that got me started; maybe I should just go check the local store and see if they're stocking either of these and do some try-ons.

Also -- if anyone has Finds for similar styles, please do share!
