I don’t have much snow experience other than downhill skiing and the rare couple of inches of snow in Seattle, but I do follow Sejsejlija Blomdahl on Instagram. She lives in Svalbard and posts most days about life there. The scenery looks stunning.

Totally agree elpgal! I’ve been to Banff twice for ski trips but to be honest, I was never a strong skier or speed lover, so the gondola and chairlift rides, plus scenic drives to Lake Louise etc, with their stunning views were kind of my favourite part!

Jules, I have visited Lake Louise, Banff, and Jasper twice Once in the summer and once over Christmas and loved it in both seasons. I basically repeated the same trip. We didn’t ski/snowboard but had such a great time there. The Canadian rockies area is great.

All I will weigh in to add is that, if you do decide to travel to a cold, snowy spot, it's all about the gear ... fashion goes to the wayside; just make sure you have super-warm boots, hat and mitts, and a good jacket, etc. and lots of warm base layers so you can be comfortable in all sorts of conditions. I'm sure me and the other Canadians/northern Americans can help with recommendations if/when needed! :)

I like snow and don't mind cold temps well below freezing as long as I am dressed properly! Of course we experience a range of conditions over our long Canadian winters and some of then absolutely are not pretty or pleasant! Janet's photos are amazing.
Not sure where you are located or how serious this idea is, but Lake Louise is one very scenic Canadian winter destination. I've never been but some serious ski/snowboard types do double winters living between Canada and New Zealand, if you're looking for snow in (northern hemisphere) summer...

Star, the heart wants what it can’t have I don’t think I could handle snow or heat on a regular basis.

Janet, those look incredible. What an adventure this must have been!

In all seriousness, that sounds like an amazing place. I'd love to see some of the northern European countries.

I spent a couple of brief days in town in Longyearbyen before embarking on an Arctic photo expedition, which took us around part of the western coast of Svalbard and then to Greenland, finishing in Iceland. I loved it! But I like cold, as long as it’s not extreme with wind and rain, and as long as I have proper gear. I don’t recall a lot to do in town, other than walking around taking photos (which is what I do everywhere!), but I found it fascinating, as the world’s northernmost “city.” It’s friendly and has that old mining town quality I’ve also found in some remote western US towns. It’s great for seeing Northern lights, if you go the right time of year when the skies are dark at night.

The real magic is experienced from the water, in my opinion. We saw seals, polar bears, and whales, calving glaciers and icebergs. On our expedition, each day we took a couple of excursions out in Zodiac crafts in small groups of 8-10 people each, to have guides take us to areas where wildlife was likely to be, or to hunt down the beautiful icebergs to photograph.

I love snow too, and we don’t get a lot of it where I live, but there is a dusting outside this morning and it’s pretty!

Pics below are two of my favorites from Svalbard — a distant glacier that has retreated over the centuries, and a glacier than dramatically calved while we watched from the safe distance of our Zodiac. The other pics are little abstract details around Longyearbyen.

That trip was September 2012 — I can’t believe it was that long ago!

No info regarding Svalbard but just adding my 2 cents about snow. It always looks so good in pictures and movies. I lived in Johannesburg all my life and it only ever snowed lightly once, now I live on the Black Sea and the snow is quite moderate but still it is so COLD. Don't believe those movies and pics. Mostly people are just walking as fast as they can to their destination without a smile on their face, wrapped up in a gazillion layers. I dream about returning to a climate like Johannesburg and would be happy never to see snow again. Btw, I am not a fan of very hot weather either. Ideal temps for me are 25 C in the day and 17C at night.

It hardly snows where I am, got a minute of flakes and that was it! I am dreaming of travel to cold snowy places and FB ads suggested Svalbard. Has anyone been? Thinking of vacationing there in Summer.
