Tonight we went to our community theater. It had snowed today, then melted, and refroze, and was really slippery. I was wearing Timberland boots and slipped around. My husband wore his slip ons with the special sole and couldn't even tell where it was slippery. He's a believer.

Glad you got them, Janet! I will do my best with that lacing. And really glad they are working out, Joy.

Thank you for the tip. Maybe I can wear the shoes with regular socks. I'm glad that your shoes seem to fit.

Okay, I got my 10.5s and they seem to fit. For Suz and Joy, here's what the SA at REI said: lace very snugly over your instep. This forces your heel to the back, making the heel slip less.

I wanted to add that yesterday I wore my boots and had to walk through 3-4 inch deep icy puddles. My feet stayed warm and dry. Like Suz said, my shoes ( 1/2 size larger than my usual size, are a bit big in the heel. I have only worn them with thick wool socks or layered socks and they do not slip nor did they get snow inside, even when snow shoeing. My only fall has been because I turned too fast on the snow shoes.

Thanks Jaileen for your comments. Good to know these soles really are good on ice. An icy wooden deck is really slippery. Hope your boots arrive before spring

And thanks for the review Suz, you always give such great detail. I've never had footwear with vibram soles and am thinking about getting some. I do have a pair of those ice cleats you tie onto your boots with elastic straps for the worst ice but they require a rather strange way of walking (sort of like walking on snowshoes but not exactly) so only for "special occasions"

...and I TOTALLY get your comment (Why was I out in that weather? I go crazy if I don't get out.) ...I feel exactly the same way, As you say, this type of boot fits into a sporty/outdoorsy category. I have that category, which includes outdoor wear for all four seasons that is not necessarily stylish but very functional. The more stylish choices are a separate category. No wonder we have so much footwear!

Chris, I have mixed feelings but on the whole positive and they have been a good purchase for me, considering them, obviously, as a gear-type walking boot for mixed conditions, not as a fashion statement! :)

The Vibram soles are advertised as the best thing since...well, cleats. I wouldn't go that far. I have, in fact, been able to slip on ice in these boots. Once by experimenting...and once just by chance, walking along in my regular way. But...I didn't slip as far, and I didn't go down. They do sort of "catch" you up as you slide.

So, on the whole, I feel confident enough to walk at my regular fast pace on mixed snow/ice/slush.

They keep my feet dry. After an hour of walking in extremely heavy slush and puddles, a tiny bit of moisture sneaked in the seam of one boot, but this only happened one time, and the conditions on that day were beyond imagining, really. (Why was I out in that weather? I go crazy if I don't get out.)

I added a heel pad thingie for my plantar fasciitis. I still find them a bit wide for my feet and particularly for the heel area. However, I did buy a 7 as I often do with boots, when my true size is 37 or 6.5. I wanted to make sure I had room for that insole.

My feet "flip" a bit. I am used to this with boots. The tie up style helps, to some degree. But because the boots are on the shorter side, on extremely slushy days (like the one noted above) I get some backsplash. Again, this is partly down to my walking style and foot anatomy. I don't think others would experience this.

They're quite lightweight, not uncomfortable to wear, and for me, extremely warm. They are easy on/ easy off. I got them at a good sale price.

Not Suz, obviously, but my husband bought some slipons with the special sole. He tested them on our icy deck along with similar shoes with an ordinary sole. He said he could really tell the difference. Joy also has boots with this sole and mentioned how good the sole was.

My size 10.5s have not arrived yet. After sending them vis UPS, they were transferred to USPS, and who knows what happened to them.

Suz you mentioned that you just bought these for icy conditions. Now that you've had them for a bit, can you comment on how you are liking them? How well do they grip, and how supportive are they?

Thanks,
