Aw, thank you Lynne! I had a look at the old thread and here was what I wrote:

Simple:
No frills. Unpretentious. Uncluttered. Pared down.

Grounded:
Practical. Laid-back. Rustic. Comfortable. Tomboyish. Natural.

Feminine:
Soft. Composed. Colorful. Harmonious. Intuitive. Chic.

I like your new descriptors too! It makes sense that you found your style shifting.

Elly, I think you are closing in on your words......I remember the inspiration pictures you posted during the original discussion had a strong travel/adventure vibe. Indiana Jones can be your trusty sidekick :).

At the time I came up with boho luxe for myself, but I've evolved it now to elegant, soft, and interesting. I think the impetus for the change has been my increased work hours and my changing role/identity from wife and mum to sole parent. Boho luxe didn't fit my increased responsibilities, but it's still very evident in my down-time style.

Back then I had Bohemian Prairie Girl as my moniker, something Angie suggested. But hat one doesn't work for me any longer, because I feel like my style has changed quite a bit in the meantime... I tried to think of a new one after that, but didn't find anything that really resonated with me. I did settle on some style descriptors at the start of the year though: simple, grounded and feminine. I think those fit very well with the image I have in mind (I'm not there yet though) and are broad enough to allow for some experimentation. I'd love to have a fun moniker again, but so far wasn't successful.

Hi again Elly --

Thanks for adding the gallery photos. I was expecting to see more skin (à la le smoking...but I guess that was more 70s than 30s!)

So seeing your inspirations, I agree with AG that you should explore/consider "debonair" -- to me that captures both I. Jones with his sword and F. Astaire making his craft look so easy while dressed to the 9s.

[Though if you thought the word "soigné" could somehow I'd love it (poor word doesn't get out much).]

As for my c 2009 style descriptors...

Minimalist Magpie

Contrarian Classicist

Persnickety Bohemian

yes, they still fit even though what I'm wearing has evolved to include current trends. To ensure they'd have some longevity, I:

made them deliberately broad

included words that map to my personality

gave myself three (!)

don't get hung up on items or outfits needing to fit into one category

define "minimalism" as referring to outfit color(s) and/or silhouette

consider "bohemian" to mean lush/romantic or global in terms of print/pattern

I don't have too many photos since I have a work "uniform," a Modern Classic base, and less need for novelty, what I wore last spring and summer was repeated item-for-item this year.

That said, I consider the below to be a mix of my style personas.

1-6 are some of my favorite looks from the year

As a fan of much of 70s style, #7 may explain my purchase of the dress in #8 for this fall

Only my love of Martha Graham -- seen young in #9 --explains buying an A-line with a hem that length and *keeping* it as-is!)

I know this got long. Hope bits of it might help you lock onto what feels right for your directional words!

I agree that your definition of preppy is accurate Kiwiw--- that said, being of a younger generation, preppy style has kind of blurred class lines and often includes good brands of classic clothes done in fun colors with a sporty edge -- i.e. lacoste sweaters and polo shirts in brights paired with slim cropped pants and fun sneakers being what I see on "prep" college students today. I think your love of stripes and classic american sportswear pieces leans that way.

Staysfit-- I can see that --- I almost see your style as the perfect "blank canvas" for your art fair pieces, interesting shoes and scarves, all about getting the fit and color right to build on without overloading.

That is great Staysfit. That sounds like it encapsulates your style and personality.

Elly - I loved the thread with your challenge pics. What stunning outfits. I was new here when the challenges were going on and did not read many of them.

Thanks for your input on my style. I do have a sporty side, and I definitely have a casual side too. Everyday elegance or casual elegance is probably pretty close. I love the casual English artistocratic style a la Lady Mary from Downton Abbey walking around the estate. I hate to feel like I am trying too hard - even if I am!!

Now a question - what exactly does preppy mean? I always think of preppy meaning East Coast University - button downs, chinos, pleated skirts, blazers, quality knits and groomed hair. Is this correct or does it mean something else?

This is such an interesting thread. I'm obviously a newbie. I came up with 5 style words that I thought fit me well: easy, creative, calm, graceful, and classic. Each word contains ideas that feel right to me about my style. I am reading the book "Style Statement" which Suz recommended.

From that book, I think I can form a style moniker, but this is preliminary. "Composed Creative". I still need to see if it fits. It sounds rather dull compared to everyone else's but in some ways I am a fairly stable, consistent and even tempered person. I think my clothing and my style of dress should reflect this. I like to be well put together, wearing simple, timeless, classic, well made, clothing. I think the term composed includes most of my previous style words, it includes the important to me, ideas of being easy, casual, comfortable, and approachable. It also includes calm, simple design, and understated elegance. Composed includes the refinement and lightness I like and it can also include my athletic side, because successful competitive athletes are very composed and focussed. The creative part is what happens when I add the colors, the spark, the fun, the layers, the boho bangles, the costume jewelry, the scarves, the funky eclectic side of my personality.

Your timing for this is perfect because I just finished working out my style moniker yesterday. I was thinking about it and now that I have written this, it really does seem like it may work. Composed Creative -that's me.

This thread has some pictures that incorporate some of my gallery-type looks-- usually a lot of black on black or black paired with charcoal grey, navy, or white.

It is basically a more modern take on what ladies like Georgia O'keeffe and others in the art scene were doing in the 30s -- borrowed from the boys done very graphically while encorporating drape and women's staples. Juxtaposing hard and soft, masculine and feminine, black and white.

Una-- I hear you-- I see Jones more in the James Bond getup or the tweedy professor look.

Hmm, I think Indiana Jones had the gallery thing going - not exactly, but he's a professor and we saw him dressed for that job in the first movie. And I think "adventurer" implies "intrepid" and tomboy as well. So "Gallerinadventurer"?

I'm fascinated by them, but have never had one.

My tastes have always felt very concrete. I know quickly if I like something or not, but often can't verbalized why. I do think I have a pretty specific style, but I don't know what it's called.

I can name things it's not better than what it is. It's not crisp, delicate, classic, bombshell or tough.

There's an artsy vibe in there that people often comment on. I googled your gallerina and saw some similarities to things I'm drawn to. I'll just enjoy it for the aesthetics and try to forget there is a negative connotation in there.

I've always loved boho, but find more than a kiss of it overwhelms me.

I like intrepid adventurer for you, Elly! (Not that it covers the gallery opening side, agreed.) I'm excited to hear your style thoughts.

I've stayed pretty faithful to my descriptor over the years - Modern Princess, Modern Feminine, Romantic Retro...stuff like that. I occasionally change the phrasing, but the baseline I'm looking for is still the same. But then, I'm like Anne in that my size hasn't changed since late high school, and my tastes are similarly slow to alter.

Hi Elly --

I'll circle back to answer your question about monikers/personas as I need to give it some thought in terms of what I've actually worn (and purchased) the last year.

But I'm really dead curious about your gallery event style as I've only seen or heard about your more casual-to-rugged wear.

Do you have any photos of yourself dressed up, of the pieces on hangers, or even a few inspiration shots (modern to go along with the 30s/40s you mentioned)?

If so, it might help us give you more ideas to put into your mental blender. ;)

You might also google for bios of intrepid adventuress' -- or review your favorites -- and see what words they bring to mind -- I'm thinking there was a British heiress in the 1800s who divorced and went off to...Morocco?...where she was involved with many atypical for her station things. [Could have that quite wrong as sadly finding/reading the book is still a "to-do".]

Glad this has sparked some discussion! Fun stuff----

First off, I'm glad you are here Una. I feel like you and Suz in particular have gotten a lot of mileage out of this exercise and I'm glad that even with the job change you still want to look and feel a little UWP everyday. I will add my 2-cents to yours on my personal style at the bottom of this reply, but I am glad you commented.
E--- I think that Storybook gamine fits you very well. I think you had a very clear idea of what you liked in a piece and a sense of how to pair things before YLF and are working on issues like fit and flattery more at this point in your journey.
Shedev-- I agree that Asphalt Angel is just about perfect-- Rachy sometimes has this way with things. Plus, it is incredibly catchy.
Caro-- I see where you are going. I think that you embody your style and I see it visually but also agree that it is a hard one to understand through a single term. Maybe we will find one yet!

Mo-- I'm really glad you were able to join us as well. I don't know the exact phrase you are currently using. I'm glad that grecian was brought up though-- in my mind I see you as a modern-day Grecian goddess in many ways esp. in Florida with its "Medeterranian" climate ---- I see classical Greek culture as having a very refined yet sporty natural element, as well as a bit of the hard-edge element, especially when you talk about the godesses and warrior women of that culture. I often see you as a pint-size Amazon.

Rachy-- Quirky waif, totally you. You have this classic and gamine side that you mix with what I can only describe as pure good-natured sarcasm and irony-- in personality and fashion ;)

Anne-- I feel you, I never felt like I could have a style (despite knowing what I like) because it wasn't represented in my closet because I was making do. Extreme restrictions on where you can shop, budget, time, and ethics plus work and practical limitiations can really make just getting dressed and looking good challenging!

Kiwigal-- what about Everyday Elegance? I also think you have a bit of this classic prep sporty side to your style in addition to the elegant side.

Jackie C, Lucy and Gigi --- I think it is fine not to have one, and you all have exactly the right additude about it developing over time. Plus, if you fall into one of the more traditional fashion personas, I think a lot of ladies don't feel the need to have an individual moniker--- having a classical prep style or a demure bombshell style doesn't mean that you don't have your own personality.

Suz--- you answered my question perfectly. Essentially very similar to what Una said-- you found something, used it, and it has become second nature. I see it in you wardrobe cohesion for sure!

Una--- I also love intrepid adventurer! It has this amazing ring to it and also really speaks to the uncurrent of how I like to dress, always ready to take on that next adventure. Heck, even my 2 pair of dress shoes slog through gravel or handle a quick sprint expertly ; ) I want everything I own to be ready to go into a bag or onto my body for the next transition or the next day trip. That is definitely a huge part in my daily style . . . I've just always struggled to figure out where my "gallery opening" life fit into that, because it really is its own vein in my style ---- people often say that my style reminds them of Indiana Jones, but when I go to dress up it isn't tuxedos or tweed, but much more of the NY art scene in the 30s and 40s where the women in galleries like Stieglitz's were playing with menswear but in a very scandalous drapey, covered-yet-exposed sort of way. Maybe it still needs more thought . . . .

I gave up trying to figure out a style moniker. I haven't even settled on sure style adjectives for myself; I guess I'm still experimenting! I just think that it's hard to come up with a moniker, because there are so many possibilities.

I don't have a moniker myself, but all my gay boyfriends describe my look as "sexy secretary" or "hot librarian".
I find this strange, as I am neither a secretary nor a librarian, and nor do I think I dress very bombshell. Maybe a touch of it, but not a lot beyond pencil skirts. But maybe they can see something I cannot :)

I always love reading about everyone's monikers.

I don't have one. But seem to fall somewhere within some kind of polished casual something or other.

Not fussed about it. I'm sure something will come to me eventually.

I don't have one either, and not sure where to start..

I would like to have elegance in it and maybe also casual or dishevelled..or easy......I don't sway to the feminine nor the masculine....nor to the rural or urban.

Maybe Easy elegant something??

This is aspirational...I don't always achieve it.

I like your choice Ellie and enjoyed reading how other dabblers have found their moniker has assisted them.

I like your descriptor Elly - as for me - I didn't have one and still don't. Despite being on YLF since before the forum began I am still at YLF 101 - finding clothing that fits, the colour looks good and is vaguely in fashion is about all I am up to! I guess I do have a pretty good idea of what styles I like but I haven't put much effort into finding a phrase for it.

I'm still steaming right along with Quirky Warrior Waif - most of the time seen shortened as Quirky Waif - which comes to us gratis Angie :D

I notice it provides tremendous room for play while still providing a common thread. Angie's pretty smart. I can go in a general direction, travel to a specific place, but I'll be off-road and hacking through the back country half the time. That's the way I am.

I love your new moniker for you, Elly! It seems to fit. And I still think Rachy was a genius with that Asphalt Angel for shedev.

E. -- Storybook Gamine is also very fitting for you.

And Una, you were the catalyst for this whole moniker making adventure!! No wonder your moniker has become you.

Angie dubbed me an Urban Prince and I felt happy to take up the mantle. It definitely got at, and continues to encapsulate, important aspects of my style.

I used to think about it consciously when shopping: Is this what an Urban Prince might wear? This was when I was still in the stage of wardrobe building and I didn't have my essentials worked out.

Now, I pretty much have all the essentials in the closet, though some may need updating/ upgrading. But I don't really consciously refer to the phrase in my head any more when I am buying. I just automatically look away from items that don't fit the descriptor. It's a seamless kind of process. Right away, I know. Everything needs a certain element of refinement, androgyny, modernity, and polish. It can occasionally hint at steely grit or sparkling wit. And (paradoxically) it can also veer feminine, but never frilly or girly.

I never coined a style descriptor that would stick -- I always felt that the descriptors were too feminine or didn't incorporate a major aspect to my style, which I feel isn't nearly as eclectic as it sounds. After more thought, I think I've finally got one:

Nomadic TomGallerina

Nomadic -- describes my love of travel and desire to look well-traveled and my keen interest in cultures. It has frequently described my lifestyle with the many temporary homes that come with contract work. To me this brings in the RATE/rugged yet effortless aspect I strive for. This one is all about experiencing and different ways of knowing.

TomGal -- This is where the sporty and masculine american classic and "next door" side of my style comes in in the form of borrowed from men's styles like oxfords, etc. This is the ranch hand, factory worker, army private, biker, logger side of myself comes out and is tempered by the slight prep aspect that is inherent in classic menswear. I don't feel like girl, lady, or woman fits me well, nor do some of the diminutives like tomboy or prince. I like "gal" for some reason.

Gallerina -- this is borrowed from a rather obnoxious term used for young well-educated women trying to break into the fine art/gallery industry. That said, my field (at least the public side) is very similar in dress. This is where the urban sophisticated-meets-grungy side comes in, but also the elegant architectural side.

I think the underlining property in all three is the combo of put-together and rugged.

I'm going to try the descriptor as a test while dressing and shopping for awhile as well as describing my style and see how it works for me.

Funny you mention this. RATE and UWP both came about through posts I wrote, and I was just wondering if they still fit me.

Claire's thread:

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ife-i-lead

Mine:

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-the-edges

And I think they still fit me. In fact, I feel so closely identified with them that I can find a way to make unexpected things work within my parameters, like the Milly "warrior miniskirt". In that sense, I feel like *I* have come to embody my vision of my style moniker, for better or worse. I still flail a lot, but it's a good place to be.

And I am tickled beyond belief that these terms are now part of The YLF lexicon!
