In my neck of the woods, it does not cool down until mid October!

I pretty much live in thin cotton t-shirt dresses that are dark enough not to need a slip; baggy shorts and cotton/cotton blend t-shirts. I try to make it a tad more stylish with earrings, sandals, and bags. (I can't stand to wear a necklace if I am sweating.)

I found a couple of very thin, cotton hoodies to bring when I go shopping in cold AC.

If you like bralettes, I think this one is great for hot weather, but it does pill:

This is my first summer in retirement, my 37th summer in Chicago. I have been living in a super lightweight pair of denim cutoffs and a series of Title Nine tanks. I wore a cotton knit top ONCE and felt like it carried five pounds of sweat.

Nicer occasions mean linen dresses (Boden). Earrings and a pedicure are my only jewelry. If I have any distance to cover, my feet have been most comfortable in leather sneakers. They just seem to go with everything. And if I wear pants, they must not touch me anywhere but the waist. I see women in skinny jeans or leggings and want to pass out.
I have an excellent straw hat for sitting outside.

I live in the PNW now, but I grew up in Delaware and lived in Ohio. My survival strategies for dressing in oppressive heat and humidity include wearing silhouettes that fall away from the body like loose fitting jumpsuits, A-line/ fit and flare skirts and dresses. Lighter and brighter colors, of course. Linen and lyocell work well in heat and humidity. No necklaces and smaller, non-dangling earrings. If I must wear closed toe footwear, it's canvas sneakers FTW.

Some great suggestions here to comb though. Joy, I like the point about Hot Fall - here there can be Hot Spring, too, where you don’t want to go full on summer-looking yet but you need lightweight items.

I live in a very low humidity area now but for many years lived in Eastern Kansas where there is lots of humidity. Forget any knits. Get sleeveless wollven fabrics- it will probably be a hot fall . Hold some items to wear in “Hot Fall”. You will want a change then. I use summer weights in fall, colors and change my neutrals to browns and light grey. A change of wardrobe can make a big difference. Go sleeveless ot cold shoulder if you eant arm coverage. If you don’t want to wear shorts., try carries as a cool but covered option or wear skirts and dresses. If you can’t wear sandals, try perforated leather or fabric footwear like espadrilles, mules and the D’Orsay style may also be helpful styles. Dink lots of iced drinks.

Where I live it gets very hot in summer, but not humid. Dresses and skirts that skim the body are my favourite clothing items as well as shorts / playsuits. Lighter colours help me feel cooler. Staying cool is the priority and I am less concerned about looking good. The ability to tie my hair in a ponytail also helps to keep my neck cool. Wearing pearls is a nice way to add jewellery that is not heavy or hot to wear. The items in Finds are what I would wear on a hot day.

When things are ridiculously hot and humid, I turn to dresses. They always seem to be the coolest, since there isn't so much extra fabric around the waist, as when wearing separates. So lightweight dresses are my go-to in this weather.

I also make up for lack of a third piece by wearing dainty jewelry--even the simplest of pendants adds interest to an outfit. An interesting pair of sunnies is good too. And a really nice pedi to show off in your sandals!

I live in the hot and humid South and one thing that gets me through summer is Athleta's "featherweight stretch" fabric. They make the only pants I can tolerate basically June through the end of September. I can't claim that they look "fab" but they get me through in comfort and that's all I care about.

Lisa P, that's exactly how I feel living in DC in the summer. I live for air conditioning. I cannot tell you how much I hate hot, humid, sticky weather. And I grew up with it in eastern N.C., where it's even hotter. My body has turned on me.

For summer, I wear lots of sleeveless tops and shorts/skorts/skirts in very lightweight breathable fabrics. Over time, I've amassed a good collection of said items, but I still grouse about the weather. It is miserable. I love fall and winter. I only wish we actually had those seasons here. We used to, but our falls, always abbreviated, have become more so, and hotter, and our winters these past few years have been incredibly mild save for a week of two, if we're lucky, of reasonably cold temps.

Lisa P - Indeed!!!!

I've lived the humidity in Maryland (Silver Spring) and NYC. Other than gritting my teeth and getting through it, the upside is that it makes those first crispy days of fall so delicious!!! And the last clear days of spring so bittersweet.

We're having some humidity in LA now too - yuck.

Tees, linen (though not my favorite), light jersey/technical fabrics, poplin.
But I sweat a lot - I'm just a wilted lettuce by mid-afternoon.

I didn't know hot and humid weather before moving to Toronto and I was ok with that :)
I am still trying to come up with a plan for working from home with limited AC in that kind of weather. For me it seems to be more about air circulation than fabric. If I am wearing a short sleeve top I rather have a short skirt/short, if I wear sleeveless tops I am ok with a long skirt or pants. All this of course with summer fabrics, no jeans or heavy polyester.

Humidity makes such a difference! I'm in South Carolina but came from the Pacific Northwest. Agreeing with ST to exercising early in the day. Or gardening, or anything vigorous outside during summer. I live in shorts, sandals, sleeveless loose tops, swingy dresses. I never wore sleeveless before moving here! Or shorts! Amazed you can stand to wear short sleeves. Agreeing that sandals are essential and I think a fun style element to focus on when you can't have a third piece.

The fabric of the clothes doesn't matter to me as much as the fact that it touches my skin in as few places as possible. I limit jewelry for that reason, too, just wearing small, lightweight things. I do wear full length wide leg linen pants sometimes to keep mosquitoes off my ankles.

For me, ultralight cotton tops and A-line skirts - because they stand away from the body. The tops often mean a boho peasant blouse, because that’s all they seem to make with ultralight cotton. Sheerness is definitely an issue with such cotton in white, so I try to find them in colour.

I don’t know if I have much advice, but I can commiserate! I am also in North Texas and also wear a lot of short sleeved or even long-sleeved cotton or linen midi dresses, also for more sun protection. My office is super casual in the summer so I can get away with some more casual dresses, but shirtdresses are my go-to when I need to look put together.
I hear you about investing in sandals - I only have three pairs, not including beach flip-flops, but I wear Converse a lot in the summer. I also have a couple of pairs of fabric dressier flats.
I can enjoy the sporty look of technical fabrics to a point, but I don’t think they keep me as cool as cotton or linen. Although I would never exercise in cotton, so there’s that.

Yesterday I spent almost six hours walking around a beautiful botanical garden about an hour north of my home -- the temps are slightly lower up there, but it was still soooooo humid that I was literally standing still, in the shade, taking photos of some leaves, and sweat was dripping off my nose. I took frequent breaks to drink water, but when I got home last night, after dinner and a bath, I think I was asleep by 9pm. The heat just wears me out.

Hot humid weather is the easiest for me to dress- good thing cause we get 5 months of it!

Sleeveless to me makes a huge difference, especially wovens. Even short sleeves will be a soggy mess over 80 degrees- on me. Plus they emphasize my wide shoulders so I avoid them in general. But I'm not sun sensitive so there's that....

Ditto pants or any sort or longer than midi skirts. Skirts/dresses are sooo much cooler than pants or even shorts, full stop. Those cropped pants will be perfect for April and November!

Sandals for everything except biking, full stop- the less covered the better. You can justify All The Sandals

Thin little sweaters/jackets work for the office or cold store a/c, but not for night until about October. Scarves are a big no- learned that the hard way

Lack of coverage makes a bigger difference to me than fabric content. If anything, really thin fabrics can be worse cause they're often sheer and require underlayers.

And more climate sister advice: exercize Early. Like be done by 9am. Cause it only starts to get down to the 80s after dark!

ETA- I don't live that far from Janet but love the summers! I love the long hours of sunlight, all the fresh produce, being able to exercize outside, and seeing so much green

People don't seem to realize that my part of the mid-Atlantic is still technically "the south" although you'd be hard-pressed to get a Baltimorean to admit it. In fact, it's amazing how many people we met in Texas seem to think we are in New England (I think folks who hae never been to the east coast confuse Baltimore, MD with Boston, MA). And we have the heat and humidity to match. I don't exactly feel like my summer dressing is "on point" but I muddle through, while I dream of cooler temps. Other than an abundance of fresh tomatoes and steamed crabs, and the ability to swim most days, I am really not a fan of summer in this region.

I totally agree with your choices. It's been hot and humid here, with an alarming lack of rain in our little area (somehow the storms that sweep through have been missing our zip code as they drench surrounding ones). I've been spending a lot of time in gear lately, wearing my lightest and most breathable athletic pieces. Lightweight garments that don't touch much skin are a must for me. And I haven't even been wearing necklaces lately because they feel kind of sweaty and annoying. I've been moving back towards larger statement earrings instead.

I'm in North Texas, which should be marginally less humid than SC in the worst of summer. (It hasn't this year, ugh.) And it's quite hot well into September/October, when everyone else is pulling out boots and sweaters. You are completely on point with your assessment! Lightweight wovens have been my preference for the last couple of years, particularly linen. If you can carry them off, linen smock/shift dresses are incredibly popular right now and just perfection for our climate.

I'm also nodding along about "too hot for third piece" and living in sandals. Jewelry is the best way to add outfit interest in significant heat. I wear earrings every day, and a small necklace (usually the fine-chain-and-charm variety) unless my neckline fights with it or I expect to be extra hot. No bracelets or watches because I don't like feeling sweat under them, and only my class ring that I always wear.

My favorite pair of sandals are from Cobb Hill by Rockport, since they offer different widths and the soles are truly supportive for me. Next to that, I like almost-flat espadrilles (not tall wedges). The rope soles form to my foot and are seriously comfortable. I have four pair in rotation from Cliffs by White Mountain.

If you're outside, definitely invest in a couple of hats. I can't get floppy brims, since it's almost always windy here, and a floppy brim in the wind feels ridiculous! I have a couple of stiff open-weave "straw" fedoras. And I also got an awesome wide-brim straw hat from my garden center for doing yard work. It has woven "vents" in the crown which help with cooling. (And a chin lanyard, which looks silly until I have to use it! Sometimes it's still not enough to keep the hat on in the wind!)

It's supposed to be a "feels like" temp today of 103F, with high humidity. Ugggghhhh. I'm on my third summer since I moved to South Carolina and I'm starting to solidify some things for the hottest months: most cotton, poly, and rayon knits are too heavy and stick in the humidity. I need to focus on either linen knits, performance/athletic knits, or lightweight wovens. Denim is basically a no-go June-August unless I need it for protective reasons. And I've been buying more short-sleeved tops rather than sleeveless; I'm OK with showing my arms but short-sleeved means I can be a bit less careful with the sunscreen, and I think it looks more put together without much difference in cooling.

My extensive collection of cropped chinos, printed sleeveless tops, and lightweight cardigans for the a/c worked great for an office job in CA, but not well for weekends/evenings in SC. I still have most of them but they hardly get worn, esp during the pandemic.

I need to re-up my accessories game, and start wearing small necklaces and earrings again - my piercings have closed and I need to go to a piercer and see if they can get opened up again - since it's way too hot for a third piece most of the time. I also need to be OK with spending on sandals, since I spend so much of the year in them.

I guess I don't have a question or a plan, yet, just some stream of consciousness rambling. Anyone else feel like their hot, humid summer dressing is on point, who can give me a clue?
