"Wearing heels" is a bit of a vague statement. I think a little girl wearing heels for dressy occasions is fine. I'm not talking about like, a stiletto. Just a little kitten heel with no sex appeal whatsoever. When I was a kid, heels didn't even occur to me as being stylish. I was happy with my white Buster Brown flats with little fluffy bows.

It depends on the shoes, the occasion, how they are being worn, etc. I wore black oxfords with a 1 or 2 inch heel when I was 13. I also had some hideous black and white heeled sneakers and a lot of the girls were wearing heeled jelly shoes (which I tried but they were so uncomfortable). The heels were all 2" or less and chunky. Not exactly oozing sexiness.

It was in high school where I started seeing heels getting taller but mostly still on the chunky side. No strappy stilettos or anything like that. This girl I was in algebra class with used to wear loafers with a 3" heel and boot cut jeans or flares. If she could walk in them and not be in agonizing pain (and she probably wasn't since she wore them almost every day), I don't really think it's a big deal.

Julie i had those exact same shoes from Clarks. I was always getting in trouble from mum for wearing them as slip ons! So i used to change them at school during assembly in the morning then put the strap back round during story time at the end of the day!

It was not my intention to criticise any ones parenting skills based on one picture, we do not know the circumstances of Suri wearing the heels and the chances are the heels were given by the designer and not purchased.

I remember when I was about seven I was allowed a pair of Clark's maryjanes in peacock blue, the strap could be moved to the back of the shoe to form a ballet flat. I loved those shoes but had so many accidents they were consigned to the dustbin after a couple of months.

My first pair of heels were picked by me at 14, like Louise they were sensible lace up heels with a 1.5" heel.

I intend to dress my children in footwear and clothing I consider appropriate for their feet until they are old enough to question my choices, at this point I may have to reconsider but will only comprimise to a degree.

3 is a little young for high heels - let's remember that women wear high heels to feel SEXY and that's not an appropriate feeling for any underaged child.

That being said I'm not one to remark on kate's parenting skills - she's doing the best she can and apparently the best she can do is designer clothes for her child. Oh well, there are worse things. I'm also reluctant to post my dislike for these shoes because I'm not a conservative person. For example I think little girls wearing bikinis is not only fine, it's adviseable. I think back to when I was a little girl wearing a bikini and I had cousins who weren't allowed to wear them. Well now that we're grown ups they still don't wear them - they're still modestly covered up and not secure enough to wear them without feeling indecently exposed.

Likewise with high heels. I never wore high heels when I was a teenager or in college because they were uncomfortable and now I'm sure I could never get used to them for daily wear. I wear them when I dress for special occasions but the feeling is torturous - but hey I want to look glamorous! A friend of mine on the other hand wears stilettos nearly every day of the year, in the rain, snow, and ice. One day I asked her "how can you stand to wear high heels everyday" and she went on to describe that when she was 16 she was a total tomboy. Her Mother couldn't stand to see her dressed like that anymore and forced her to wear high heels every day. She learned how to do it ever since and now dresses her feet to match her daily mood, not like me who avoids heels at all times. I plan to incorporate that tactic somehow when I have a daughter that age.

I think low, laced or ankle strapped 'party' heels are ok from about 6/7 but for everyday wear i think certainly well into the teens and then only sensible heels. My school shoes were always from clarks were my feet were measured. At about 14 i wanted heels so my mum agreed on one condition- sensible ones. I ended up with a chunky 2 inch heel with laces. x

I'm not sure when I had my first pair of heels, I can't remember them in any case. I'm guessing that I was 14 or so, and they would have been for my Grade 8 graduation. I don't remember being particularly anxious to get into heels, maybe because my Mum doesn't wear them (she has to wear orthotics)? My parents never really told me what I could/couldn't wear though, so I'm sure it was just a case of me wanting to try them at that time, rather than finally being "allowed" them.

Maya, that's exactly how I feel; bizarre is the right word! I'm pretty sure that when my sister and I were little, we wore suit bottoms only (or more likely just diapers) on the beach. When we were a bit older we had cute one-pieces, but I don't think I got a bikini until I had, er, something to put into it

I'm not a mom, but I had a great one. I feel like girls grow up waaay to fast these days. I dont' know what I'll do with my children, but we couldn't wear heels or makeup till age 18. It was SO HARD at the time, but now I understand why. I had a very long and full childhood.
I really have a hard time seeing little girls done up like grown women.

So at what age should a little girl start to wear heels? Don’t think I’m condoning heels at an early age, I’m just interested in your thoughts. I had my first pair of pointy red winkle pickers at age 11 (an inch high wedge).

Julie, I wore sturdy Clarks every week day for the first 17 years of my life virtually – the joys of having a regimented school uniform.

Not a mum but work with children and it's sad how quick they want to be grown up in terms of clothes- take last not uniform day mini skirts and short tops together were prevelent!! My friends 12yr daughter pulls modern fashion of perfectley she's really into leggings and dresses, clamdiggers with a baggy top etc

On the topic of shoes- i certainly don't think they are appropriate footwear for a 3 yr old. However i remember having a pair of 'best' shoes when i was about 6/7 with a teeny heel and an ankle strap which i was allowed to wear to parties and visiting relatives but certainley not for everyday wear x

OMG, that child is such a little diva already! She really is adorable! I don't know what to think about the heels. I heard some speculation about those being dance shoes??? But then again, she probably didn't have dance class on Newbury Street, right?

I have only boys and they are all ruff & tumble so they wear supportive, TOUGH boy shoes. My little one does like to try on mama's shoes once in awhile though. I have to agree with the others though - somehow I am not as bothered by the shoes (her parents of course need to worry about the effect on her feet) as some of the crazy, skanky clothes they make for little girls these days.

I'm with Patience on this one, I have my eldest daughter in practical clarks shoes suitable for all of the rough and tumble of a toddlers day. I would worry about her damaging the bones in her feet if she wore a heeled shoe.

I like my daughter's to look like children and not adults, they are usually a riot of clashing patterns, colours and layers.

My children do play dress up with my heels and I have bought my daughter those plastic costumey heels for dress up at home or Halloween. Otherwise, I have strong beliefs about buying high quality, supportive, flat shoes for my children. Suri is 3? I can't even think about the social pressures/issues at this point as the health of my children's growing feet is really the primary concern.

As just a Mama-to-be, I may not be fully qualified to comment on this post. However, I'm going to share my thoughts anyway. I have 3 nieces - 5,2, and newborn - the 5 year old and 2 year old love to play "dress up" using their mother's heels, or mine. Just as often they play dresses up using the boots of their daddy or Uncle.

I have no problem with my nieces (and possible future daughter) using heels as an item in play, but I would never allow my child to wear them out into the street. Overall, I feel as though the fashions for little girls is becoming "too" adult. I am bothered when I shop for my nieces and found outfits that are almost exact replicas of items I would wear - just in a much tinier size. However, that is probably a topic for another thread.

Hmm, I agree that this is a bit weird, but I don't want to throw any stones here. For all we know, Suri could have been bugging her mum for months for a pair of "heels", and this could be a one-time treat for her. I guess all little girls want to be grown up and like dressing the part now and then, I probably did at her age. I actually find this (slightly) less creepy than seeing little girls wearing bikinis. For some reason, that always freaks me out.

No thank you! One thing to play dress up in your mom's (or whoever's) shoes but quite another to let your child wear heels on the street. And I'm with Maya- women wear heels for reasons that are totally innapropriate (and IMO creepy) for a child. And echoing Taylor, How can a kid be a kid in heels?

Most little girls (2 and up) I know LOVE to play dress up in heels. They walk surprisingly well in them, whether the heels are their size or mom's old cast-offs. I don't encourage my girls (6 and 4) to wear them, but occasionally they'll use my old mules for dress up. And that's fine by me. They're experimenting with different roles right now, and I encourage that.

I don't know the circumstances in which Suri wears heels, so I can't comment on just seeing one photo. All I know is that many moms let their younger kids wear whatever they want out of the house (superhero costume, tutu, pjs, whatever), and I have no problem with that--as long as safety is not an issue. With kids, you've got to pick your battles, as they say.

Those types of heeled shoes for little girls are everywhere. It's not something that I want my daughter in (for all of the reasons that Maya stated), but I also believe that it's your decision with your own kid. There are bigger issues in the world than what Suri is wearing on her feet.

I'm not a mom, but I think it's ridiculous for little girls to wear high heels. I mean, it's oppressive enough that some women feel the need to endure great pain and force themselves to wear heels to look "good" or sexy, but why pass this message along to a little girl? Let them be young! I bet it's really hard to run around and play in those heels!

I liked to play dressup when I was a kid, and I would wobble around the house in my mom's heels, and that was it. I was happy PRETENDING to be an adult for a little while, not actually being one. The idea of indoctrinating little girls from the earliest point possible to feel inadequate without heels just irks me. Don't enough fully grown women have that problem already? I know I sound all uptight and serious but I really feel like this obsession we have with heels, and super high ones at that, is pretty disturbing. I was hoping we could at least leave the children out of this.

And then there are all the problems with those little feet. I don't know. When I think of all the reasons women wear heels (to elongate the leg, to look sexy, to feel authoritative), none of them exactly seem relevant to a kid.

It's fine if it's just once in a while, for a special occasion or something like that...but if it's a habit, not cool at all.

Oh, foolishness. . .Six is too young, unless you're playing dress-up. Twelve is too young, unless it's a play or a costume. IMHO.

A hundred years ago, "growing up" meant, at the age of sixteen or eighteen, that you wore your hair up and your skirts long. . .Not such a bad milestone for grown-up clothes and shoes in this day and age.

I think they are too young for heels. When my youngest daughter was 3 she broke her ankle when she tripped over her own feet in tennis shoes. I can't imagine the damage she would have done in heels.

My 6yo daughter DESPERATELY wants to wear "high" heels and I am not allowing it. Its a hard battle because they are available everywhere...even Target! I just think it looks too adult for a child.

I am particularly interested to see what moms and mom-to-bes among us think of it.
