Happy to hear that the surgery and hospital stay is over. Recovery is frustrating and seems endless at times, but hang in there. It's times like these when you realize how one muscle affects the other and how truly amazing our bodies are.

I'm glad you're out of the hospital. Every day you'll feel a little better, and get a little more of your strength back. Be sure to follow their rules regarding lifting things. This is to prevent scar tissue which is bad.

Thanks everyone!

Una, you're my guide! Thanks for charting the waters ahead of me! ;)

I'd forgotten your suggestion of fresh lemon juice in all the water I'm already drinking. Will add that.

Yes, supporting the midsection is rough. Scott has been helping me lie down - good excuse for us to get snuggly and close. I'm already familiar with rolling onto my side to make sitting from a lying down position easier (that's how we're guided out of savasana in yoga class) so I have't been struggling too much - except for all the times I say "ow!" when trying to do something.

Oh gods...yes, the hospital stay is rough! I'm choosing to find it funny that they woke me out of a sound, fairly rlaxed, sleep to tell me I wasn't feeling well. (Actually, my blood pressure was too low, and they wanted me to talk to the attending physician. They turned off the pain meds I was getting through epidural and my BP started going up right away.)

Now, I'm just reading, and sleeping, and walking short distances (everyday I'm steadier on my feet, but walking just a block still makes me so tired) ;). Oh, and I'm eating ice cream. I sent Scott out today to pick a tub up from our favourite local shop - blueberry lemon custard. Yes, it's amazing!

Anyway, again...thanks for all the love and support. This has been hard, and it's going to be hard for a while longer, and knowing I have caring folks in this little corner of the Internet...means more than I can say! :)

The hospital stay is rough! I had a slight fever so they kept waking me up which made it worse. You will improve RAPIDLY after the first week - just be patient right now. Walk around as much as you can stand without hurting yourself. It helps with grogginess and digestion. And drink massive amounts of water and (at the risk of repeating myself endlessly) fresh lemon juice! And sleep as much as you can.

I didn't have staples, just dissolving stitches and tape that I had to peel off myself in the shower (!). Sounds like you are right on course. Supporting my mid-section in some way when doing anything was key - otherwise getting up and down was just too much.

The hardest part is behind you already... just give yourself time! I expected to enjoy the lounging but discovered I am not a restful patient. Still, it was a good break. I am almost 9 weeks out and back to climbing, hiking, and regular activity but there are certain things that cause pulling or pain (twisting movements!) and I avoid those - the internal healing can take up to 6 months...

I'm not surprised you are stressed. Surgery and hospitalization are both a huge deal - physically and psychologically. So it will take time to recover. I know you want to get back to normal but this is the time to rest more than you think you need to, watch trashy movies, and let your sweetie wait on you hand and foot.

HI All,

Thanks so much for all your support.
The surgery went just about as planned on Friday...no major surprises. I got home on Sunday morning.

Definitely feeling worse for wear now. My abdomen is super-tender, and I'm not very steady on my feet.

My internal systems are working well enough for them to have discharged me, but I don't have much of an appetite.

I'm also just super-stresed from the surgery and hospital stay, though I should say that I had some of the best, most consistent, nursing care I've had, or witnessed, in a while.

Now, I'm just supposed to rest, to recoup some energy, to walk as much as is comfortable but to avoid other forms of exercise. They were able to take the staples out this morning, so I don't need to folllow up with the doctor until a month from now.

My Sweetheart is being...well, a sweetheart. He's meeting my every need, including physically supporting me when I change positions to give my poor, abused abdominal muscles a break.

So, I'm stressed and fragile right now, but I got through it!
