CarolS, posts I’ve seen about IKEA’s new lines say they emphasize “a lot more sustainable materials such as wood, rattan, recycled cotton and linen”. That sounds good to me! Bitd, I remember pine shelves & tv stand for my living room, plus other pieces, of pine wood. Their materials were getting really disappointing over the last few years. I wonder how much they were pushed in this new old direction by supply chain issues.

Irina, I’m glad to hear you’re able to get a new furnace, and that fast! The situation you describe at IKEA is bizarre.

Synne, my BiL got one of those food sealing machines a few Christmasses ago. He says it cuts down waste. I think they also use it for venison, quail, etc that he hunts.

Donna, lol about you being the supply, chained to your kid.

Synne, it’s been +17 inside the house most of the week since it is not cold outside yet but we expect temps to go down a bit next week, so if we don’t get a furnace by then, we will try to use our wood burning fireplace more. I really hope to get it by Tuesday.

Our IKEA stores are half empty. My kids literally bought a last couch available and we can’t even buy a cheap Billy bookcase, which is a staple of IKEA at all times!

We received an *interim* auto recall notice a few weeks ago because apparently our fuel pump may go out at highway speeds. But they don't have a fix and don't know when they will have one. So I imagine if they ever do figure it out we won't be able to get the part(s) anyway.

And at the beginning of the pandemic our oven went out (just after the warranty expired) on our $$$ range. The part was from China. It took months and months to arrive, but then didn't fix the problem. Next part took something like seven months. $4,000 later and we still don't have a working oven so have been using my parents' old portable oven from the '70s or '80s. No electronic parts to go bad.

I guess I should be happy that DD wants cash for her birthday (in November) and for Christmas. I guess her dad and I are the supply, and we are chained to her?

Oh, I think this is only the start. Or is this a conspiracy to kickstart the economy again? I have no idea!! And I have limited bandwidth of my brain right now... I'd rather not delve too deep. Thank you for all your replies and musings! So interesting to see that it is a global thing.

That is awful Irina! How will you stay warm?

This week I had a big expense, I bought a food saver (vacuum sealer). I have been thinking about getting one for the deep freezer for a while. Since inflation is on the horizon, I figured now is as good a time as any..

I am also periodically browsing Zara. But I'm like.. what's the point?

Don’t know if this is supply chain related, but DS#1 got a call today from his dentist, and there is a one month delay on making a crown for his implant due to shortages of components. On the other hand, my mother has her first cataract procedure next week (deferred since June 2020 when Covid cases overwhelmed the healthcare system.)

I would be more concerned about food and fuel etc as there are so many clothes around even second hand. I do know that for some this pandemic is incredibly tough. I am fortunate to have a job which I have been able to do from home and a spacious house and plenty of food. I am aware that for some in the community including where I teach, even getting enough food has been a struggle and people have been forced to stay in small living spaces during lockdown. I suppose if there were parts that couldn't be supplied, that could be a problem. When we were in a strict lockdown, I was wondering what people would do if the washing machine breaks down or fridge, and we couldn't get the parts. That would be hard.

Yes, all of those things are global. In the US, there are also backups at ports that are tying things up even further. Rachylou gave one example. Also in California, boats are backed up at Long Beach reportedly in part because zoning laws limit how high shipping containers can be stacked. That port and Los Angeles are now operating 24 hours a day, but they are weeks behind. I haven’t heard about issues at ports on the East Coast of the US, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Most overland cargo in the continental US is sent by trucks, which brought slowdowns at the start of the pandemic, because truck drivers were having a hard time finding places to eat and sleep. https://eu.usatoday.com/story/.....450237002/

Sorry for being absent!
Interesting (and thoughtful) replies, thank you all. Yes, I think this is a global issue, especially in regards of imported goods. Furniture and anything with micro chips out of China (new cars etc) are getting scarce and there's a long waiting period to be expected here. I try to not read the news (for my own sanity) so I don't know the ins and outs. I do see with my own eyes that price of gasoline is skyrocketing, and that my local grocery store is out of (China produced) plastic bags.

I do have to plan ahead for work with componentry and metal supplies - so I keep an eagle eye on this. IT is the other thing I watch carefully.

For me personally the only thing that would be extremely challenging would be either no reading glasses or no running shoes - everything else I could adapt around pretty easily.

I do feel for some businesses relying on stock to arrive - I know furniture and appliances are bad for example as are some brands of sports gear.

I didn’t realise that supplies were so affected in other parts of the world as well, interesting. It’s hard to tell what’s media chatter and what’s a real issue. We had petrol supply issues here for about a week but they have all resolved as quickly as they came, some blame the press for over egging the problem and creating high demand.
we bought a new car recently due to our very old car breaking down irretrievably and we’re told that there was one car available in the make we wanted or it was a six month wait.
we haven’t noticed any food supply issues but we have noticed Restaurants shutting very early or not opening at all on certain days due to staff shortages ..

I’m not worried about supply chains for stuff like clothes — we have enough of that. Certain food items? We will adapt if necessary. I think stocking way up on necessities just adds to the problem — the hoarding mentality is part of what got us here.

I am concerned about the appliances — we are planning a kitchen renovation for next summer and know that it will take that long to get our new appliances and possibly fixtures and other supplies as well.

I’m most concerned for people who don’t have the resources to either stock up on necessities, for example, or who may be left with vehicles that can’t be repaired because of scarce parts and backed up repair shops, etc.

My son is having trouble getting furniture for his apartment. I haven’t been able to get salt nor cinnamon at the grocery store for a month. That’s what’s going on in my neck of the woods

I don’t have any strategies for my shortages. I just keep on checking the stock. My son is taking a break from ordering furniture and making do with what he has.

Snow pants with bibs might work for the kids at different sizes because of adjustable straps. Using growth chart is a very creative idea

Well, since I do supply ordering at the bakery, I will say the logistics problems are bad and don’t expect any reversal anytime soon. I’m in a port city… there are traffic jams at the ports and sailors are trapped off the coast because the ships can’t be unloaded.

And for example…. Parchment paper is double the price, IF you can get it.

I expect still to get parchment paper, tho, at a more reasonable if increased cost and only a week longer lead time. On the other hand, it won’t be our preferred type.

I am trying to stock up a bit before cost increases go into effect for other goods, but not like on toilet paper or anything.

For snow clothes, I’d expect less variety and higher prices not total unavailability… although it has to be said our local outdoors place has signs everywhere in the store apologising for lack of merchandise. They hadn’t any new shipments since the beginning of summer. I was able to buy a campstove but then had to go to Target to get fuel… uh, so that’s a thing… stuff is going to go to bigger retailers who do big contracts, rather than smaller businesses.

I’m not sure if I’d try to buy snow suits with the idea they’d work for two winters for really little kids. They grow so much. I’d probably hope to find something at the children’s second hand store first and if that failed, go the biggest cheapest chain store around.

Clothing-wise, there is not much I need.
Yes, COVID and ensuing human reactions to it have disrupted things. Is anyone surprised? DH and I talked about stuff that we should order now "just in case" - ended up getting some windshield wiper blades for the cars and a few other maintenance things given auto supply shortages.

On the other hand - how much of this is media chatter? When my dear 85 year-old bed-bound MIL in her nursing home starts talking about "supply chain" then I know there's been too much media hype.

The Business Insider article called it out. “Americans are breaking shopping records.” So much for change.

That is an amazing article Suntiger! I think that is written by a true Spin Doctor, in my humble opinion.

In the US, major kitchen appliances (and some installations) are very tricky to get at the moment. It's a 6 to 10 month wait for anything that is not in stock.

Our gas (petrol) prices are really high right now- about $3.15 a gallon. They said it's cause of a shortage of drivers to transport it. I'm glad I bought my heating propane early this year!

I'm mostly worried about getting auto or appliance parts if needed, or building materials. Clothing I wouldn't worry about at all, because people are always consigning things. There's definitely no shortage there!

Eta- just found this article! Business Insider: Blame consumers for America's 'everything shortage'.

Synne, I hope the supply chain issues you mention do not come to pass, especially on essential items. In terms of buying things ahead of time for my 12 year old son, I am not doing this as he is now at an age where he is likely to shoot up and bypass one or two sizes as some of his friends have done. It will be strange when he has a deep voice and is taller than me.

Do your kids grow according to the chart? Mine started off at 95th percentile, was literally off the top of it for years (we lived in Texas when he was in preschool; strangers tried to recruit him to their football teams), sank down to just above average in middle school, and now is 6’3”, fairly tall.

If you’re talking about scarcity in things like heating fuel….that’s scary. We’ve seen those predictions; I interpret them as meaning prices will go up, not that things will be unavailable. We did just find out that we went €800 over on our utilities usage for the year, so we have to pay that and put sweaters on, but I’m not worried that we will freeze. Our anxieties are about what’s happening back home, politically & economically. My son is particularly torn, as Germany isn’t comfortable for him, but he wonders if our republic is at the brink of collapse.

The high school my son went to in Florida was considered pretty decent. The kids came from areas with very different demographics & income levels. Quite a few literally came to school everyday because they got free breakfast and lunch there. This is a problem every summer vacation, and when schools closed for Covid. Having that as our reference point helps us recognize that things much tougher than what we’re experiencing are survivable.

I recall from your post about money-saving strategies that money is tight for you, wish I had concrete suggestions (“get a side gig!” “Rent out a room!”) but I can only wish you well. Stay safe, focus on the emotional well-being of yourself & your family, and enjoy what we do have. And breath!

Our dishwasher bit the dust in 2020 and it took 6 months to get a replacement. So I am more worried about major appliances needing to get replaced. Also, there is now a limit again on some paper goods around here. I cannot go thru another toilet paper shortage!

Clothes, particular food items…they don’t worry me as much. There’s always a substitute.
