I like capsuling the wardrobe for easier access to everyday wear. Let us know how this works after a few weeks.

Well, the big swap around has been done! I guess only time will tell if it is workable or not now!

I managed to get rid of a few other things as well that had been hiding away, so I now have yet another full box to go to charity - so if nothing else comes of it, at least I have a little more room and a few more things identified as holes.

It is good to read about the way you guys organise your wardrobes too - like a giant brain storming session!

I follow a similar system to shell keeping all skirts together...... All formal wear be it dresses, skirts or tops is all together at one end so similar to your idea. I say go for it you can always rearrange if it doesn't work x

LOL! Theresa, I definitely understand your fear of breaking the rules. However, it's your closet and your clothes so you need to come up with rules that make you HAPPY and make dressing easier as well as fun. Give it a go and let us know how it works out for you.

I just finished tidying up my closet after the NAS tornado blew through. Now, I smile every time I open my closet door! : )

I have my wardrobe split into everyday, super casual (not to be worn out of the house), gear, and super formal/fancy. A lot of the everyday items can be worn with the other groups, but the super casual, gear, and super formal/fancy are all items that absolutely cannot become ok in an everyday environment. For me this helps to use my everyday items to their maximum potential and doesn't hurt my creativity.

It also helps because I kept on getting stuck on the too formal items when picking out clothes. I would be going through my dresses and think "huh, I haven't worn this in a while, I wonder if I could dress it down..." and then after pondering for several minutes I would realize how much time I wasted, feel bad about it, and give up altogether on the idea of wearing a dress that day.

So long story short, I definitely think you should try dividing up your wardrobe and see if it works for you!

I sort of have mine grouped both ways at the same time. From left to right, I have pants, dress pants, blouses, blazers, work dresses, casual dresses. If I had any casual blouses or blazers, my system wouldn't work, but it's nice to have all my work clothes nestled together in the middle.

Maybe you could try something similar? Or, at least have each clothing items (pants, dresses, tops, etc.) broken down into sub groups - casual, work, etc. Not sure how that would work with your closet door issue, but it's a thought.

Give it a try! You can always rearrange if you find that it's not working. I have dressier items (formal wear, party dresses etc) as well as ethnic wear stored in a separate closet altogether. The remainder of my items are sorted by type (pants, dresses) and color in my main closet ranging from dressier to more casual. So for example in the pants section, I have black wool pants at the end with my black jeans at the front end right before I go to grey. Does that make sense?

Yeah, definitely, do it however it works for you. I do a little of this, my gear is in one drawer, casual tops and shorts in another, work clothes in the closet.

phew! Thanks for humouring me and allowing me to "break the rules"!!!

I'll do some rearranging, live with it for a little bit and see how it goes...

April that's a good point about mixing the dressier with the less dressy... I guess I'm not likely to wear my dressier with MOTG as I don't want the kids killing anything, so perhaps I need to have one side as MOTG and the other side can be all the dressier and formal clothes that can be mixed easier.

In the meantime, I've just tried on some of my formal clothes and taken pics... I'm about to post the photos and prepare to say goodbye to 3 outfits!

In some ways, Theresa, the principle of hanging like things together encompasses what you're suggesting. You're just dividing "like things" along different criteria: occasions, rather than type of clothing.

The only potential drawback I can see to this method would be if it prevents you from thinking about your clothes in new ways. If something is tucked away with the "dressy" items, you might not consider its potential to work in a casual outfit.

But I suggest you give it a try and see what you think. It absolutely makes sense to have your "everyday" clothing in the place that's easiest to reach -- see how it goes and let us know!

I think that if splitting it into capsules works better for you, then it makes sense to do it that way. My occasions are all the same- "schlumping about with the kids", so you are lucky to need occasion wear!

My big girl is unwell so having the rest of the week off school and I have decided to make the most of this quiet time at home and re-organise my wardrobe! (I have a whole packing box of stuff to go already!)

I'm finding my wardrobe annoying at the moment and am always up for a change LOL

So, at the moment, I have all the "like" items together - dresses, tops, pants, skirts etc.

But it drives me nuts because I think I would rather have them split into occasion wear...

My wardrobe has one side that's easier to use (door opens easier!), so I'm thinking of using the other side for all the less common occasions and the main side for the most common.

So all my formal/dressy/racewear together, then all my MOTG, then going out etc.

Has anyone tried this with success? Every single thing I read on wardrobe organisation tells you to hang all like items together but its just not working for me and I know I have to break the rules, but I'm scared LOL (Yes, I'm a rule follower LOL).

I think I'm feeling in a bit of a rut because I can't see my usable wardrobe at all times, so haven't really been doing anything exciting with my daily outfits lately.

Thanks for any ideas/experiences etc!
